Live TV EPG - The update you’ve been waiting for

Man that’s strange. I’ll just wait to see what records on 1/12. I guess TiVo is wrong in this case. Not sure why that might be when I’m using Verizon Fios and zip code 20171 for both. Very strange.

@johnm_ColaSC Yes, I believe I provided the lineup too: Verizon Fios is what the Plex employee would be looking for right? I’m honestly not sure if TiVo or Gracenote is correct here, but as @pshanew pointed out it appears that Gracenote is correct for now. I’ll find out for sure on 1/12.

yes, yes, of course

Missing updated info for 2 channels.

St. Paul / Minneapolis OTA zip code 55082

Channel 4.4 is new and missing. Should be Fave TV
Channel 9.5 was Light TV is now Grio TV

I finally managed to use an external XMLTV EPG that is working. If anyone in Spain is wanting to use it, here you have: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dracohe/CARLOS/master/guide_IPTV.xml

There are another methods to customize your own EPG guide.

Recording scheduling, but, still doesn’t work now on my side, which is making me evaluate leaving Plex in favor of Jellyfin, which has all the features Plex Premium has, except avoiding commercials on DVR recordings, plus it is completely free and open source. And best of all, it doesn’t have any of those ugly bugs Plex DVR has like infinite loops, non-working schedules, incorrect mapping of channels, video lagging the firsts seconds when starting the emission… it just works

I’m very disappointed with plex lately, a paid service shouldn’t have so many glitches as plex has, nor force their users to use something that isn’t working perfectly when the old method was working good.

Which of these do you mean:

  • leaving Gracenote in favour of TiVo
  • leaving TiVo** and going back to Gracenote

I haven’t checked Jellyfin out in a while, but I believe it is still relatively immature with fewer platforms (compared to Plex) although the devs are actively engaged on their forums. I’d be interested to know your thoughts on them when you have finished your eval.

[edit: TiVo was typo’d as “trivia” - now fixed]

Don’t know how much time was TiVo and Trivia working, I’m a premium user since… 5 years? I can’t remember… I meant the method last week was working.

I didn’t tested extensively yet, just added my TV Shows collection and IPTV subscription, installed on FireTV and android phones. The first impression was “that thing is fast, easier than plex to configure (the Live TV and DVR, I mean) and just works”.

I didn’t want to add all my movies and music, because I was just trying the DVR functionality, so now at least I can record my schedules and see LiveTV on Jellyfin, but if Plex doesn’t do the homework, I will finally do. It’s a pity, because I’m sharing my plex libraries with seven friends, but some of them are premium and they are having issues with IPTV as well, so we are losing the joy to use plex, and sharing libraries within Jellyfin is quite easy as well. Non-related to DVR, I see there is a “jellyamp” application (inspired on plexamp but working on arch linux) and several command line music players, and mopidy daemon to use with my desktop or mobile MPD client, and a useful API which will open many possibilities to developers…

I will evaluate deeper Jellyfin, but as for now, I like what I see.

sorry, that was typo - trivia was also meant to be Tivi (I have corrected it in my post),

agh - sorry Gracenote is worse for you. TiVo was appalling for some of us - so much so, we stopped using Plex’s EPG altogether.

Open source software is not the Holy Grail, just looking at Android for example. Many manufactures of hardware have quickly made use to Proprietary versions, to feather there own ecosystems.

Jelly what ever is just that at present, time will tell. Many platforms are not even close to being a sound solution. I am not saying never here but realistically I am not convinced it will be the answer.

What guide data are you using?

From past experience, you can only use ‘Schedules Direct’ (paid service yearly) which is US / Canada only or XLMTV which you can use in Plex anyway!

SchedulesDirect is much more than just USA/Canada - I used it for my UK EPG in Plex all through 2020.
https://www.schedulesdirect.org/regions

[edit: typo and added regions]

Still having the issues on Freeview STV region.

5 channels still flagged as HD - 9 (the SD BBC Scotland), 50, 56, 64 and 80.

Also random “Unknown Airing” listings on the web browser. This is where I like to schedule my recordings so a major nuisance.

Examples: C4 HD tonight between 19:00 and 21:00
Saturday 9th - BBC 4 HD - 19:00 to 21:00 also 00:00 to 01:00 etc etc, there are many many more.

They appear correctly on the Android app guide, but however you cannot now change the recording folder on the Android app, it just ignores it and sticks it in another library…

As always, it is infuriating to have this paid for product functioning so unreliably.

And again I would advise anyone (especially in the UK) looking to Plex to facilitate cord cutting to think twice and read up on all the problems (including numerous BASIC DVR functions that have been unresolved for YEARS now such as easily viewing a recording in progress from the start - and not have it crash on you if you happen to fast forward the ads!) before parting with your cash.

Well, that is your opinion. The reality is other. When something is open source, people can contribute, modify or fork those things they don’t like, and there are plenty of things on Plex people dislike. You don’t need to see android, you just can name Plex, which is heavily based on open source and locked they source to tie you in its ecosystem.

Android has pieces of open source, plex has also parts of open source, Internet is almost 100% open software, almost every piece of hardware you have around you is based or have parts of open software… so, yes, open source is the holy grail. So, that’s why is so important to support 100% open source projects, like Jellyfin.

Jellyfin is at present doing it better than plex, they are listening their community and each step is forwards, not backwards. Sure, Plex works on VR Headsets… if anyone is using that thing at present, while EPG guide and DVR scheduling, infinite loops on airings, lag on changin channels… the most basic things are giving us problems, but hey! They release ancient only english movies for free who no one cares a s*it…

I did a quick search on duckduckgo and it returned a github repo for spanish television updated daily, and posted a link to a place to make your own guide, I didn’t tried myself because I found the github repo afterwards.

Sure, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO… a ‘starter’ won’t know what to do with Plex Server.

I don’t even know what are you saying…

No. You can still use IceTV rather than switching back to Plex’s included Gracenote EPG service.

A guide refresh yesterday knocked out the incorrect episode listings on my TiVo. Looks like Gracenote wins this one. Not sure if that’s always the case, but at least in this instance, Gracenote seemed to be more up-to-date than TiVo.

Jellyfin -it took your time but I’m glad you finally got write it correctly- has an app for android TV, it is present in all major android stores, so I don’t know what are you talking about. In my case, I don’t own, and I don’t want, a ‘smart TV’ because is the ‘less smart’ solution for a TV, I’d rather prefer to have a STB/Barebone/Android stick, which add this and even more functionality, so that’s not a problem for me.

Plex, Emby and Jellyfin are three personal media streaming solutions, each has their own pros and cons, Plex perhaps is the most feature-wise of the three, but Jellyfin is completely free and open source, and has most -if not all- the features Plex and Emby forces to pay for a subscription. Besides, Jellyfin works without a glitch in all its features. Again, it doesn’t have all the features Plex has, but basic features like EPG, Live Streaming with no lag, scheduling, and play live streams without infinite loops are working just fine, and here, in Plex, we’re paying for something which is borked. Developers not just doesn’t fix current bugs, but instead are adding even more problems. And we, their paying customers, are their guinea pigs, and this is infuriating. Barring that, Plex, Emby and Jellyfin has apps for android-based smartvs, mobile devices and web interfaces. That’s enough for me as I don’t own any console, or VR headset or any other fancy gadget, so that’s useless for me. What I want is basic functionality working as intended.

I was talking about DVR functionality in plex is currently worse than in Jellyfin, and I’m considering to migrate to Jellyfin (I already did with LiveTV, because plex now, for me, is completely unusable), I think I’m not trolling or insulting anyone here. If you get offended, then ignore me. This is not Twitter, so no need to trolling anyone.

I’m a bit tired of you and your vendetta against open source applications in general or Jellyfin in particular. Or perhaps you’re one of those who thinks he is in the possession of the Greater Truth. I was just exposing facts, not saying you must use anything beside plex, so I will do whatever I want and you do whatever you want, but let’s the discussion end here.

@malevolent and @SE56, that’s enough discussion about alternate products and how they do things. This thread is about Live TV EPG changes, not platforms. Please stay on topic.

Also in the STV Area and having the same HD Channel issues on channels 9, 50, 56, 64 and 80.
And channels 112 , 113 which are HD are showing as non HD

I have a problem with EPG guide for a new server configuration, in two other servers configured some time ago, the guide is working fine, one with Linux Ubuntu and the other one with Windows, in those servers reviewing the configuration I can see that I am using an EPG whose name is “Vodafone Portugal IPTV” however in this new configuration that list is no longer available.
In this new PLEX Windows configuration I can grab a list whose name is “Vodafone TV Net Voz (224 channels)” however this list returns 0 airings.
I don’t know how to grab the list from the working servers to this one, so no solution.
I read that Plex has a new contract for new EPG guides, don’t know is this is the reason for the current issue.
I appreciate your help because this is one of the main reasons I payed for a Plex Pass.
