Metadata Language is mixed

  • Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
  • Synology DS918+

After fixing a problem with the posters / covers, the language of the metadata is a little bit mixed.

Before i refreshed the metadata to fix the problem with the posters, every title / description was german (as long as TheTVDB / The Movie Database provide german texts).

After refreshing the metadata, most titles / descriptions are still german, but the titles / descriptions of some shows / seasons / movies are english. TheTVDB / The Movie Database provide german texts for all episodes / movies, but sometimes Plex is using the english texts.

In one show the texts are even mixed within one season:

  • Episode 01 -> german
  • Episode 02-05 -> english
  • Episode 06-09 -> german
  • Episode 10-13 -> english

I already tried to refresh the metadata (Library -> Manage Library -> Refresh All Metadata) again. No change.

Can someone maybe help me to fix this? I want german titles / descriptions for all shows / seasons / movies.

I believe that Empty Trash should be performed before Clean Bundles (and then Optimize Database if desired).

I second the suggestion to try the new agent!

That’s the order in the instructions.

The Plex Dance ™

I believe it makes sense logically. Empty Trash marks items for removal. Clean Bundles actually removes them. If Empty Trash is last, the Clean Bundles step wasn’t effective.

Edit: And Otto says so:

That doesn’t match my understanding of the Plex Dance or what these actions accomplish.

My impression is that Optimize Database is a database structure cleanup - the records in the database are reorganized efficiently, like a defrag; indexes and btrees are rebuilt; free space is purged. But it doesn’t affect the database contents, doesn’t remove metadata, and it’s not a required step of the Plex Dance.

I believe the first step of the Plex Dance is to move files out of the Library so Plex won’t see them.

I believe the second step is Scan Library Files to make Plex aware of the removed files and associated library items.

I believe that Empty Trash is the next step of the Plex Dance so that the library items and their references to metadata are removed. (Empty Trash may happen automatically after the Scan... if the server is configured to do so.)

And I believe that Clean Bundles is the next step in the Plex Dance because it removes no-longer-used cached metadata. This is done so that the cached metadata isn’t used again when the files are added back. This comes after Empty Trash or the metadata would still be active and wouldn’t be cleaned.

Having done those steps, when files are added back, they will be matched anew.

@OttoKerner do you mind clarifying, especially straightening up any misconceptions I have?

I’m pretty sure @Volts has the correct order for the Plex Dance.

From the “Tips, Tricks, & How-Tos” section, the article The Plex Dance has the only order that works properly every time. The order suggested by @trumpy81 may work, but I have my doubts. :wink:

As an aside, on the few occasions I’ve had to use it, I skip the optimize database part. It’s never made a difference in the results, and the database is optimized during maintenance periods anyways.

You are perfectly right, AFAICS.

No. I tried it now. Thank you for this “Plex Dance”.

Most shows / seasons were fixed after the first run. Marvels Agents of SHIELD was fixed after five runs. The Mandalorian is still NOT fixed after 9 - 10 runs…

Is there another way to fix this? I don’t want to do these steps 100 times until everything is fixed… This should be a “one button” action. Click at “Refresh all metadata” → all metadata will be refreshed / loaded → fixed…

All in all i’m happy with TheTVDB. Is there a way to take a look at the new Agent, without using it? Like the search at TheTVDB (https://www.thetvdb.com/search?query=). This way i could compare them a little bit. The posters and the order of the episodes of some shows (Release order, DVD order, alternative order) would be interesting for example.
