I just recently had to rebuild my windows system. I am having trouble with Plex reading my movie library the way it was prior. I had almost 800 titles showing, now I am short about 200 titles, and many are not getting correct poster images. I keep rerunning the update library function, all of the titles come back briefly then go away. I know that they are all named correctly because I spent a lot time originally fixing them so they would show properly. In theory when I reinstalled Plex they should have all just showed up. Any thoughts as to what is happening. Please need some help.
Please provide a directory, etc listing showing how the movies are named and organized.
Please provide log files from your Plex server.
- Set your server for debug logs only, not verbose (Server Settings â General â Show Advanced)
- Re-scan the library with missing movies
- Wait one minute after scan finishes
- Pull log files (Server Manage â Troubleshooting â Download Logs)
- Attach entire zip file to the thread.
Regarding posters:
Thanks so much for your reply.
I am attaching logs.
Not sure how you want to show you my dir.? I have every title in its own folder. Let me know in that. Screenshot?
Currently it seems that the entire library is now listing again, but many are missing meta-data and posters.

Thanks for the log files.
Your database might be corrupted. There are many messages for missing files, âError Parsing Files,â âSlow Query,â etc.
See the missing file entries below. Do they really exist in your system?
You also need to clean up your file naming to better follow Plex standards. Extraneous information in file names such as âHEVC.720p.etcâ can make it difficult for Plex to correctly match movies and TV shows (Plex is very picky with TV shows). More details below.
See the Repair A Corrupt Database support article. It provides information on how to check & repair a database.
Note, since you just re-installed everything, it might be easier to delete the existing database. You wonât have to reinstall Plex or lose any movies. You will have to recreate your libraries. See the blue info box in the support article (~5th paragraph) for more info.

File Naming and Structure
You should follow Plexâs naming & organization standards. It helps Plex match movies and TV shows faster and more reliably. The extraneous information such as â720p.BluRay.HEVCâ makes it more difficult for Plex to match things. If you want to keep the info, put it in square brackets, so Plex will ignore it.
Instead of:
\Movies\Alita Battle Angel (2019)\Alita.Battle.Angel.2019.720p.BluRay.HEVC.mkv
Use:
\Movies\Alita Battle Angel (2019)\Alita Battle Angel (2019) [720p.BluRay.HEVC].mkv
This post provides the details on how Plex matches things.
You should also clean up naming for your other movies when you get a chance. Many people use FileBot to help with naming. It has pre-built templates for Plex.
/Movies/Ant-Man (2015)/Ant-Man (2015).m4v
/Movies/A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)/A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019).mkv
/Movies/1941 (1979)/1941 (1979).m4v
After renaming files you may need to perform the Plex Dance to clear old information out of the database.
Thank you very much for taking the time to review my logs and give me such a detailed response.
I will try to repair database, and if not will do a redo. All of the reported missing files are not missing, and I get the renaming thing, I have fixed many of them already. But many that are not showing proper meta data are named properly. I can updated them manually one by one and all of the info will be restored.
I will try running what you suggest 1st. The one by one method is very time consuming.
PS, thanks for the hot tip on Plex Dance.
Just an update. I was able to fix my Movie Library from all of your advice. Thank you again. The steps I took and few observations/humps that I encountered I wanted to share with the community.
I deleted Database as described.
I downloaded and purchased File Bot, changed the entire library naming.
I encountered a small learning curve with that. After running the fetch data, I couldnât change names because it was encountering multiple files in one folder. I had to separate out the multi part titles and then run the fetch data again. With a large library that was time consuming. Ended up running it 3 or 4 times till I figured it out.
Used the Plex dance method as described. Worked great. However, I need to note that the renaming fixed 98%. Plex ended up misnaming a few titles the way there were prior to the renaming. So bizarre, the Metadata was correct but the name wasnât. And this was after deleting the database. Not sure what relic was left behind or what cache may have kept this erroneous data? Obviously was an easy fix, I just had to cull through the entire library to double check everything. All in all, a much better process, still takes time, but at least now everything is baselined and named correctly.
Glad you have things working.
FYI, on multi-part movies, not all Plex clients like them. If you run into issues it is sometimes best to just combine the parts together. Nothing to do with naming and organization. Just that some clients do not pick up the multiple parts well. See thread linked below.
Yeah, it happens. There are some movies that just donât match well, match to other movies, etc. Usually happens when there are several remakes and Plex matches to a different release. Sometimes happens for seemingly random reasons. Fortunately those are few.
Again, glad you have things working. Cheers!
Caused by embedded âTitleâ metadata in your files.
Settings - Server - Agents
Drag all instances of the line âLocal Media Assetsâ downwards, to the lowest position. Then Refresh Metadata of the affected items.
That makes sense. Thank you for your reply.
