I donāt think thereās anything we can do, other than be patient and wait for updates from the developers.
They have logs and are investigating the issue, if they need more information they will ask for it.
Based on the information her and in this thread on reddit, Iād rather suggest returning the tube and getting the pro if you can.
Personally, I have until december 20th to return mine, and will try to be patient in the hope that it can be fixed. My recommendation to the Plex team (@daioio) would be to prioritize this issue while the people in this thread still have their tubes, and can still provide the necessary information and assist in testing the fixes.
Already sold

Sorry for the delay, we are looking into the issue and improving the appās performance on the SHIELD Tube, sadly we donāt have a magic solution but we are definitely working on it as a high priority!
If you have a SHIELD Tube, you will want to sign up to our beta to ensure you have the latest version of Plex.
Would you able to let me know the media information of the 4K videos that crash your device? I am able to playback 4K on my Tube, but it will crash when the player is terminated.
@sixones
i already provided logs ā¦, here and sent you via PM, weeks ago.
I cant help you anymore because i gave it back as long as i could return it. because i didnt know if its going to be fixed. You didnt answer in weeks, so i was forced to. sorry. Maybe someone else can help you.
best regards
The logs didnāt appear to contain a crash which is why I asked again.
We have some improvements that will be available in v7.26 this week that will improve the performance on the NVIDIA SHIELD Tube (not been able to crash it myself with the improvements with 4K etcā¦).
Were you guys able to reproduce the UI freezing on launch of a 4K remux file. Control of the UI returns in 5 minutes or less. The video doesnāt stop, itās like the remote gets temporarily disconnected.
I just found this thread after upgrading to 4k content last week. My tube crashes about 3-5 seconds in to what appears to be high bitrate 4k files using Plex. Lower bitrate files (compressed) seem to fare better. I havenāt compared HDR to non HDR yet, but the tube seems to stream compressed (with Dolby Digital Plus) HDR from other sources (Vudu, Netflix) better. It behaves like itās choking on a resource as the video stutters, then ultimately crashes Plex, restarting the app. I know the video files are good as my phone and PC can stream them perfectly. My two cents.
Identical issues here with a tube version of the 2019 Shield.
Essentially, UHD media may or may not crash the app. Sometimes restarting the Tube Shield or Plex can get it to play, though the media may start to stutter. The UI can become unresponsive in the middle of play, so pausing becomes impossible (and can result in a crash). Trying to exit the app will also cause a crash in this state as well. No one specific UHD title seems to cause this, though Iāve included some mediainfo.
Kodi seems to play UHD flawlessly on the Tube Shield, as in the UI is very responsive with no crashes, and pausing isnāt an issue.

I have still been having crashes/stutter on the new player in the latest beta on my tube, but when I reverted to the old player, I havenāt had any issues.
Iām getting the same results with the old player. They seem to be making progress.
1 month in and it looks like iāll be returning this stupid tube I just bought specifically to play 4K Remuxes
Old and new player still make some of the 4k files crash here. I honestly donā t see what they have or donāt have in common. Iāve seen it happen with ac, truehd and dts-hd, but sometimes they work as well. All .mkv 4k HDR HEVC. And tested all with or without external subs, makes no difference and everything is directplay.
I really donāt understand why plex moderators/employees always say you best use a shield and when I finally get one I have more issues than beforeā¦
So glad this is not just me! Back to Roku. Bye Atmos
Having similar issues here with the 2019 Shield (Tube).
4K playback is absolutely fine for maybe 10 minutes. Then the movie starts stuttering a little bit, then more, then more, then very much and then the Plex app crashes/restarts. When the movie starts stuttering I have also noticed that the UI of the whole Shield device is choppy, once I couldnāt even go back to the start screen until after Plex had crashed. Almost as if the whole device runs out of memory slowly.
These are issues plaguing the new Shield Tube they donāt seem to happen on other versions.
I understand that and now I reverted to my xbox one X to watch 4k movies, but without TrueHD. Which is about the only reason I bought the tube. I might switch to Emby and see how that works on the tube.
Update:
It works flawlessly on Emby, so until Plex decides to fix this I will be using Emby on my shield tv for most of my content.
The Tube will eventually play the files for me. May need a few tries. Not ideal though.
I just wanted to also chime in on this that Iām also experiencing issues with 4K on the Tube. Itās really random. Some movies canāt even play, some play for a few minutes, some play for awhile then stutter then crash.
