"Playback Error An error occurred trying to play this item. shaka1001 (Network)"

I got this error on some latest movies added aswell. I tried the “analyse” tip and that seems to work. What got my attention was, that the shaka1001 error movies had no audio/video info (all showed none), after analyzing they all give the correct source for example 1080p - h264 and English - DTS 5.1. So if you’re having errors on some tv/movie files, check if theres “none” stated at video/audio and do analyse and hope the correct info pop ups and it plays just fine after that… Still weird why plex doesnt detect it tho…

This started happening for me immediately after moving the plex server from a windows 10 machine to a different windows 7 pc. I followed the instructions from Plex found here https://support.plex.tv/articles/201370363-move-an-install-to-another-system/ and it work flawlessly (other than this error) and I can see all of my libraries/users/recordings etc. wwwizzarrdry, how do I run that command chown -R plex:plex /mnt2/plex-transcode/ on Windows 7 or is this a hardware/OS specific command? Trying to fix this without having to rebuild. Thanks all.

I started getting this error on the second to latest Plex Pass release, and it’s continued with the current (1.11.1.4760 ) always in the last 2 minutes of any show/movie I attempt to watch. I’ve tried reinstalling plex but it’s still doing the same. It’s driving me nuts.

That’s a change ownership command in Linux. That worked specifically in the case of the Transcoding directory not being owned by the Plex system user on CentOS.

If you’re on Windows, it’s a little different, but if you really think you’re having a permissions issue between the data directory of your old server and your new one, you could try migrating the data again using Robocopy. Which is basically Microsoft’s version of Rsync. The below command would copy everything while preserving permissions, but I don’t think that’s what you want.

robocopy \\old\plex etwork\path C: ew\plex\local\path /E /DCOPY:T /COPYALL /V /TEE /LOG:C:\path o\Robocopy.log

I highly doubtful this is your problem. You typically have to try pretty hard to mess up folder permissions accidentally on Windows. Bit you never know. The Plex logs aren’t much help after getting the Shaka error, so you don’t have a lot of info to start from…

For any shaka1001 errors - server logs please

Enable Debug Logging on the server
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

Reproduce the problem
Get a screenshot and note down the time
Capture the server logs
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

attach the zip + screenshot and indication of time of error

and if it is happening after pausing / seeking or whilst playing back
and is it happening near the end of the file or anywhere ?
and how close to the end?

and also state if using the hosted web app (via https://app.plex.tv/desktop) or the bundled app viahttp://localhost:32400/weborhttp://local-ip-of-server:32400/web`
and what web app version (settings / web / general)

Lol, or Plex could write a proper error submission routine. It’s pretty funny asking your clients to provide all the required info when a properly written error handler could do this automatically.

A simple Try Catch on all their functions would allow them to auto submit errors, logs, device information, etc.

But why would Plex want to auto submit and categorize system errors so they could actually prioritize bug fixes…

Might help someone down the road.

I was getting this obtuse error after migrating to a Rockstor NAS.
It only happened in the web client, and only on TV and Movies, not Music.
So I chown -R plex:plex /mnt2/plex-transcode/ my BTRFS transcoding pool and Plex is happy again.

For me, the permissions were ok on my data/ share, but I forgot that I moved my transcode/ share on an ssd pool with the wrong permissions so transcoding could not start.

I think this might be what is going on with my machine. I am running Plex as a docker on an unRAID server. I recently installed an SSD cache drive and attempted to move all my Dockers over. They all moved successfully, although I did have a few files in the plex docker not copy because I received a message that said a more recent version was available. Once it was completed, everything started and worked fine, but I found some files would not play correctly in the web browser. They will play from my MiBox, just not through the web browser. When I try on my phone, I get an error that says “Conversion failed. The transcoder crashed or failed to start up.”

So I am wondering if it is a permissions issue. I don’t have a lot of experience with linux, and so wanted to double check the command format, before I run it. Should I follow that command specifically, or do the paths need to change?

Thanks,

Steve

The problem has been happening near the end of the file (<2 minutes remaining). It only seems to happen while watching in a browser. The problem does not seem to happen with other players (like Roku). I am not seeking or pausing, just playing the video.

I am using the hosted web app (I log into my server through https://plex.tv).

Time of most recent issue: 10:33am 2/7/18

I did not get a screenshot, but it said shaka1001 and stated something about Network issues.

Same issue here using Nvidia Shield. Can’t play any films at all.

Two things:

  1. Since transcoding requires writing to disk, you want to make sure your system’s “plex” user has read/write permissions on its data, config, and transcode directories.
  2. Your plex user and directories may differ depending on how you setup plex.

I’m running a Rockstor server, which abstracts the docker installation a little and may vary from your setup, but the general Plex docker help is here: hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/plex/
which should help you find where your directories are located.
If you are totally lost, you can always cd / && ls -lart and search from there. There’s only so many places it could be. My files just happen to be under /mnt2

*To see all your users type this command: cat /etc/passwd
You can see my plex user is named “plex”.
Running cat /etc/group will do the same for groups.
So now you can find your plex user and group fairly easily.

Now that you have your user:group, and the directories you need, you can change the permissions if needed with chown -R <user>:<group> /your/transcode/directory/

Thanks for your post.

I have Plex running on a Synology NAS and I’ve verified that the permissions on the plex transcoding folder are plex:users.

The problem does seem to happen only with streams that need to be transcoded (audio or video). I get this error after watching the video up until almost then end. Then the stream stops.

I suspect that if it was a permissions issue, it would just show me the error right away and not allow me to play the video at all.

Correct. I changed the ownership to root:root and immediately got the error again and can’t even start a film that requires transcoding. So it appears you’re facing an entirely different problem.

Same here. I get it on the end of music as well.

Also running into an issue where it spins on a black screen within the last minute of a show and then resumes.

chown -R : /your/transcode/directory/
fixed it for me…
What happen is I had issues with my system, I removed PMS and the plex user account…
Created a new plex user and installed PMS, Made the necessary server configuration changes and set the transcoder default directory to it normal settings that I have been using…

Problem; that old transcoder directory was owned by the previous plex user account,
Creating the new user changes those values,

chown changes that directory to the new user settings. problem fixed

thanks @wwwizzarrdry for pointing that out…

Installing server version 1.11.3.4793 and Plex Web version 3.37.2 solved my problem of Playback stopping about 2 minutes before the end of the file.

Thanks Plex devs for fixing this issue. It was extremely frustrating.

Yes the fix which was regressed a few weeks back is now in 3.37.2

See Release Notice http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1616989/#Comment_1616989

  • Fixed cases where playback would error or fallback to a transcode near the end of a video

I am having the same issue but as far as I can tell, it only happens at the end of every episode of season 6 of TWD. It plays on every device I have plex on including VLC but stops at the end.
