Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

This might be a dumb question but just to make sure, I’m uninstalling plex correct? Will this lose any of the account data or share i have with those who use my Plex?

Well, the first time i installed pms for dsm7, i didn’t read that dialog and chose my /volume1/Plex which had my library files. Now it has library files. That folder used to be a few gbs but now it’s around 50mbs. How does it read metadata if the folder is empty?
That was my only concern if any.
I’m very ■■■■ about my files since i use my synology for all my stuff and it bugged me that those files disappeared :confused:

@tinyarms

If you can confirm You still have a whole bunch of stuff in

Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server

(Especially look for Preferences.xml)

THEN

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 app and ERASE
  2. Install fresh

Installing fresh will trigger “Migration” . This is what you’ve been missing.

Yep! I have a bunch of stuff there and the Preferences.xml file. I don’t see an option to uninstall the DSM 7 app however

@ethaniel

Just so I can CONFIRM?

  1. You put MEDIA in the Plex share somewhere ?
  2. If so,
    a. Where did you put it?
    b. Why did you ignore the warnings I placed?

Good news is:

  1. Provided you’ve not panicked and uninstalled with the ERASE option
  2. We can get your media back.
  3. You will then have the opportunity to put it somewhere else in a shared folder of your making.

When i say Library, i mean metadata, not media.
My media is in /volume1/movies.
I have no problem with PMS as i said earlier since everything works. All meta is displayed. I just don’t know what happened to /volume1/plex/library.
I have not ignored any of your warnings since I didn’t know.
I updated days before i found about potential problems during upgrade to dsm7, so i searched online and landed here.
That’s all :slight_smile:

He means the Plex app.

As far as I know once you upgrade your NAS to DSM 7 you cannot go back.

@tinyarms

I checked your account.

I only see the DSM 7 server. I see 15 confirmed shared users and 1 invited.

Does this make sense?

Given this is the DSM 7 application instance, I must ask, is all your metadata populated ?

If you have DSM 6 data in the Plex share and more metadata under DSM 7 then something is amiss or regenerated ?

@ethaniel

Thank you for clarifying.

Since the size of the Plex share has dropped considerably,

–AND-- if you still have a healthy running server

–THEN-- what you see in the Plex shared folder is residual files which are not part of the PMS core and were not migrated. Additionally, I write “Migration.log” to track the progress of moving from DSM 6 → DSM 7. It will contain warnings, errors, info – everything as well as the timestamp ==== markers I place there at each stage.

Everybody will have something in the file beyond what I show here. None of it is of concern if the metadata has otherwise migrated.

While you upset that the files are not accessible in the GUI, there really isn’t any need to be in the “Plex Media Server” sub-folder, is there ?

All I did was move them from where you had direct access in File Station to a place you don’t (which DSM required) .

I have, since this package scripted was approved, been able to make a few more changes.

I strove to make the changes for two reasons:

  1. Uses HyperBackup (or other method) to backup your Plex metadata.
  2. Have GUI access for those rare emergencies where my GUI cannot handle the task needed.

If you want to start using that new scripting , you are welcome to do so. I have a Forum Preview. Using the preview has one stipulation which is significant. Please advise me if you’re interested

CONFIRMING: Synology does not permit downgrade to DSM 6.

Also confirming: DSM 6 packaging does not work on DSM 7.

(That’s the third reason … of lesser importance… I strove to give us a structure which is as close to DSM 6 like as possible AND avoid confusion where possible )

I think I have figured out, confirming this is what I’m supposed to be seeing? What exactly am I erasing here, will I lose any content or anything?

@tinyarms

DO NOT do that.

you will lose the shares you have.

All the sharing information will be lost.
All your media is safe

Good thing I didn’t haha. Then I’m back to not following, I’m not sure what I should be uninstalling or what options I should be choosing.

That’s why i asked you :slight_smile:

please answer these ?

How do I check that?

I need to reiterate I’m not the most technologically literate.

Plex/web

Settings - (Left corner) Users & Sharing.

Yes all 15 confirmed users and 1 invited is accurate.

Good. we want the DSM 7 instance.

Now, please confirm for me if you have a Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server / Preferences.xml file in the Plex shared folder ?

Yup!

Look at the date. 4-Aug-2021.

Is that when you installed DSM 7 ?

I think DSM ‘repaired’ your PMS package by making a copy (not correct behavior).

If you look at your server, Are all the library sections and files there as they should be?

When we figure this out, we will know which data to keep.

Roughly yes, can’t remember the exact date but that’s about right

Yes everything looks to be there, haven’t had issues accessing anything or noticed anything missing
