Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

Well with firewall enabled and 32400 (TCP) open, I still can only get an indirect connection when remote.

Edit: I would actually want to open up my External port number right, I know the internal port is always 32400, my external port is not. I opened 32400 but maybe I should have done the external port?

For test purposes:

  1. Port forward (manual) 32400/tcp in Modem/Router → IP.addr.of.syno
  2. Ensure 32400 on Syno is open (or just turn the whole firewall off)
  3. Restart DSM and let it come up clean
  4. Let it run 3 minutes after booting – then download the logs ZIP file
  5. Attach please.

Not that log.

Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs.

THAT ZIP file please.

What you gave me does not help.

Ok, I will get the correct log when I am back on that network.

I just noticed that when I am connected to a VPN I am able to get a direct connection (when remote from NAS location). But if I am on my local network and not connected to a VPN (still remote from NAS location) and try to connect I get an indirect connection. What do you think that could mean? That seem so odd to me…

Remote Access / diagnosing over VPN… not fun… and definitely not fun if remote access is through a VPN when PMS gets finicky

Yeah the weird thing is I’m not even using a VPN to connect to the PMS local network. Just a random VPN on my computer auto connecting to whatever it wants to. I first noticed this when I tried accessing my PMS via my work VPN which connects me to an office building not the local PMS network. I just think its interesting that it works when on a VPN…

I will add that I am not using a VPN with PMS or on any of my routers local or remote. I just happened to notice this. I wonder why it works when I am connected to a VPN but wont work when I am not…?

Thanks @trumpy81, that is good to know.

However I’m not trying to configure Plex or change any of the settings. Just watch the content on my PMS. And apparently, at least right now, unless I am connected to a VPN I can only get an indirect connection. I’m not sure what it is that makes it all work when a VPN is thrown into the mix.

Hi Chuck,

I have managed (as far as I could tell) to migrate according to the manual you kindly provided, but am now facing the problem that my media libraries do not show up. This is the case for the ā€œhome screenā€ and Setting > Libraries. No libraries, no thumbnails, no erros displayed. It does give me the option to create new libraries.

How I migrated:

  1. Uninstalled the DSM6 plex app
  2. Upgraded DSM
  3. Downloaded the Intel 64bit plex app from the official download page
  4. A couple of failed attempts at migration where a complety new server was set up.
  5. At one point I made a mistake and accidentally pressed delete inside the old Plex volume. I did manage to abort the operation while it was still displaying ā€œcalculating file sizeā€ or similar, but I don’t know how to check that nothing was actually deleted.
  6. Finally got the migration to run completely by erasing the new plex package and making sure that folder permissions for the old Plex volume were applied to subfolders as well.

Steps taken after migration:

  • Check that migration was successful. There were no errors in Migration.log and all the data was cleaned from the old Plex volume. The new PlexMediaServer volume does contain about 25Gb of data now.
  • Completely deleted the old Plex volume
  • Check r/w permissions of PlexMediaServer user for the media storage volume.
  • Uninstall and reinstall Plex (without erase)
  • Removed all old authorized devices in plex settings

I am on a DS1520+ running DSM 7.0-41890 and Plex 1.24.2.4973. Plex logs are attached. Plex Media Server Logs_2021-09-01_00-08-46.zip (111.6 KB)

Am I missing something here? Is this salvageable? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

@trumpy81, yes that is the url that I am currently using, but I clicked on yours just to be sure. Without any VPN connection I am able to watch content but at a capped 2mbps (via Plex Relay I assume). So its 480p-720p. If I use a VPN it shows a direct connection in the settings and I can watch everything at its original quality. This might not be a clue to what my issue is here but I thought it could potentially help narrow something down. Perhaps not though

@trumpy81, I do have Plex Pass. A lifetime membership on two accounts actually. And I logged in via both accounts to test with the same results.

Good idea though.

@trumpy81, yes you are correct. I’m using a different account on this forum site, signed in with a separate gmail account. But I can confirm I do have Plex Pass, have had it for years.

And I can stream 4k content in my browsers so we should be good there. I also test accessing my PMS in a few different browsers, Chrome, FireFox, Safari. All with the same ā€œIndirectā€ / ā€œLimited Connectionā€ 2mbps low quality streams. I just don’t understand what could be causing an indirect connection as everything seems to be setup correctly. Being able to get a direct connection via a VPN should be some evidence that it is setup correctly

@trumpy81

Mine looks similar to yours.

hi there.

DSM 7.0.1 is out now.

could we install it and plex will work oder should we wait like the 7.0 RC month ago?

Thanks @ChuckPa and @trumpy81 for all of your work on this forum.

As a Synology newbie with a new DS920+ install, I have now successfully installed PMS 1.24.2.4973-2b1b51db9, and my libraries are now scanning as I write.

My challenges:

  1. I didn’t read all of the instructions thoroughly - which resulted in challenges 2 & 3 below :smirk:

  2. I couldn’t find PMS 1.24.2.4973-2b1b51db9 on the Plex site. I then realised I needed Plex Pass which is on my old account and which expires soon. I added a lifetime Plex Pass to my new account and PMS 1.24.2.4973-2b1b51db9 then appeared in the download section.

  3. After doing a manual install through Package Center, and then opening the Plex app, I received a ā€˜Not Authorized’ message. I then remembered some posts highlighting that you cannot connect to Plex using quickconnect. I then accessed my NAS using its IP address, and the Plex app then loaded beautifully.

Thanks again @ChuckPa and @trumpy81 for your highly valued efforts! :+1:

Thankyou very much. I have been through the steps and rebooted DSM. I then refreshed all libraries but I still have the same issue where other users cant see any new media?

Thank you for the hint. I have done the Claim Token thingy, server is available now, but now all my libraries are gone. I can re-add them, but that makes all the playlists I have created gone. Is there a way to reactivate the ā€œoldā€ libraries?

Hi Everyone … I came upon this guidance after already upgrading to DSM 7 and updating the Plex Package (without uninstalling the DSM6 one).
I dont seem to be able to kick off the migration process as per the guidance as i dont have an option to set Custom permissions for the old Plex shared folder although I am able to tick Read/write for the Plexmediaserver in the internal user permissions - HELP!

I think I should be now follwoing below but dont understand teh uninstall guidance - as in uninstall Synology DSM 7 ?

  1. If you have been using partial DSM 7 - without migration (or have a failed migration with all data still in the Plex shared folder) – Uninstall & ERASE DSM 7. Install the package again Fresh.

@jpmcnally

There are reports of this happening. Something in DSM is amuck

I’m hoping to find a common procedure for everyone.

Would you please do the following?

  1. Create a new shared folder ā€œPlex2ā€
  2. Normal permissions for your username & administrators
  3. After completing it,
  4. Open Shared Folders app again,
  5. see if you can assign Custom permissions to PlexMediaServer . (if you even have the Custom button)

Please report back.

Yes i now have the Custom button for PlexMediaServer under system internal user dropdown. I also have this for the new PlexMediaServer Shared folder when DSM 7 PLex package was installed - but not my old Plex folder or any of the media folders. (Photo/Music/Video).

@jpmcnally

  1. You have a PlexMediaServer shared folder now (new packaging)
  2. You have a server of some sort – which looks like a new server – less all your data.
  3. All of your data still sits in Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server

If the above are true.

  1. Stop Plex (if running)

  2. Move the contents of the Plex share, specifically Library, to Plex2

  3. When it is complete:
    a. Delete the old Plex share (or rename to Plex-old)
    b. Rename Plex2 to Plex

  4. Uninstall + ERASE the DSM 7 Plex Package to erase the errant server

  5. Reinstall the new Plex Pass 1.24.2 package

  6. Follow the migration instructions.
