Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

Well, I seem to have fixed it. Might have also been something with my router, apple. I was not able to reach the server which worked perfectly fine before I believe (from the open button at synology packages. So I setup the 32400 port in the router. So that was fixed. Ran the install again, after removing with the middle option (so uninstall with server disconnect).
In the mean time I had my libary in the old plex folder again, permission all pre set oke.
Installed again with claim code.
Now its fully back. Thank god.

@Wingspanner

  1. Docker will work on DSM 7 but cannot be done through the Synology GUI. You must use docker run or docker compose.

  2. I’ve been so busy with helping folks that I’ve not had time to research further.

  3. There is another script I need to write (DSM 7 migration repair script). This scripting will take priority.

I understand. Getting the native app working slick and smooth is priority number 1.

I’m good letting my little setup chug along on DSM 6 for the interim.

But you do believe we’ll have access to the Intel Quicksync hardware features for hardware enabled transcoding like we currently do in DSM 6 once you start working with it a little more?

If you’ve seen any of the existing DSM 6 docker configurations then you’re 90% of the way there already for DSM 7.

I will gladly give you the additional mapping required.
(there’s a draft How-To I’ve written somewhere here in the forum)

I will warn (BIG WARNING)…

DSM 1.24.2.4973 changes the path to the Plex Media Server directory.

There is a two part gain here:

  1. /var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer always points to the shared folder no matter where DSM 7 put it or you move it.

  2. If you map /var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData to appear as Library/Application Support, you’ll have that final mapping.

The only thing you need do is find the UID & GID for your particular installation.

grep PlexMediaServer /etc/passwd

The first number is the UID,
The second number is the GID.

@ChuckPa
In the Plex share folder it indicates it takes up 24.99GB with 90601 files and 93723 folders. So it appears all the data is there. When I go into Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server it appears most things are there. When I browse the sub folders there is a lot of data. Application support under Library just has the Plex Media Server in it with its data. My actual media is in separate share folders on the nas with permissions adjusted per the guide.

To answer your second part, after I ran Plex (DSM7) version the first time it did a set-up routine. I thought it was just confirming things. My account and user information was all there from the prior install but not the media or the “old version” of my server. that is when I noticed the second server which is able to access my media etc on the nas.

Plex Media Server folder:

Please let me know if you need anything more.

Thanks!

@mpoffo

Outstanding. Now we know definitively where we are.

  1. You have your existing DSM 6 data still safe
  2. You did somehow setup a new server (perhaps Repair ? ).

Regardless of how we got here.

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 application with the ERASE option.

  2. It will remove this errant DSM 7 version.

  3. Before you install the DSM 7 app again, please confirm for me the name of your Plex share ( Control Panel - Shared Folders ).

  4. If it’s not Plex (exactly that upper/lower case cadence), please rename it to be so.

  5. Also, please take note of the volume it’s installed on (if you have more than one DSM storage volume) because you’ll want to install on that volume again.

  6. Now, install the package again.

  7. The blue title bar in the GUI should say “Install” .

  8. If it says “Update” or “Upgrade” – screenshot – stop – and show me please.

  9. Else, follow it through.

  10. Be certain to grant permissions as instructed or ask for a short cut if needed (I found a slightly less complicated way – but it still takes just as long to do )

  11. Let it install, without interrupting.

  12. You can follow its progress by opening another DSM window and looking at “Migration.log” from the “Plex” share

I looked for a server under your account.

  1. I did find your main DSM 6 server.
  2. I also found the errant DSM 7 server – and removed it for you.

When Migration is complete, your existing server will have its data updated to reflect “DSM 7”

The is the original share is Plex - Spelled exactly like that and the newer PlexMediaServer folder. My videos are in separate share folder. I only have one volume on my nas. I will try to proceed as you indicated and let you know if I get some update or upgrade screenshot.

Stupid question but where is the erase option? I am not seeing it.

It all sounds good.

I suspect you were caught by a split-install like another user was.

I don’t know what is prompting DSM 7 to do this because I can’t reproduce it.

Regardless, with the data known good, let’s proceed.

Can you clarify where the erase option is? I just see the uninstall. Google failed me or I failed it. :slight_smile:

Which language are you using? I support 8 DSM languages in the package :slight_smile:

Is that an option after I select uninstall:

I use English.

Yes… Go to Uninstall.

On the next page you will see the uninstall options. (new in DSM 7)

Plex on DSM 7 now has a very nice GUI to help you with the basic installation and management functions

I keep asking for one! :sunglasses:

but no joy yet :frowning:

Maybe I ask too much? :smiling_imp:

You can send feedback to Plex via the web page if you wish.
They will get your comments and forward it.

You bet!

Hello,

At this point I am unsure what to do… I was running plex on my Synology DS918+, then updated to DSM 7 and everything broke. I initially tried to “repair” the fix for the beta version app, but that didn’t work. So, then came across the online thread “Plex Media Server for Synology DSM 7 - Release”, and followed the instructions the best I could, but still nothing worked. After many attempts and nothing working, I decided I would just start from scratch, and not be concerned about losing metadata. I unistalled the plex app, deleted my old “Plex” folder, and the new “PlexMediaServer” folder from my files. Then installed the DSM 7 version of plex from “Plex.tv/downloads”. But when I try to open the app, it says “not authorized”. And If I just go to “app.plex.tv” and sign-in that way, I can’t get to my plex media server.

Any help would be much appreciated! I’m really struggling here :frowning:

Thank you.

@Nick72310

Clicking “Repair” is normally the right thing to do — HOWEVER — Not this time!

DSM 7 changed so much that automatic repair isn’t possible.

To make sure where we’re at,

  1. Look at your “Plex” shared folder.
  2. Look in it – down into the Plex Media Server directory
  3. I expect your metadata will all still be sitting there

Assuming you have it all, proceed below – ELSE come back here for other instructions.

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 package – choose the ERASE option to get rid of the errant server DSM 7 created.

  2. Now, with it uninstalled,

  3. Go to Plex.tv/downloads (PlexPass)

  4. Download the 1.24.2.4973 package for your machine and install it.

  5. As you install it, it will bark errors at you With instructions.

  6. This is expected and part of how we have to work on DSM 7 when we don’t have “root” username anymore to do it automatically.

I’ve created a long post here, full of details about what happened.
In that thread, I also show you screenshots of what you need to do to “Migrate” your server (fully intact) from DSM 6 → DSM 7.

let me know if you have any questions.

@ChuckPa

I no longer have the “Plex” shared folder. I deleted it after many failed attempts to get things working. I had followed the instructions in “Migrate your server (fully intact) from DSM 6 → DSM 7”, but nothing worked. I wasn’t getting any error messages, as the instructions suggested.

I am fine with losing my metadata, I just want my Plex server to be back up and running.

What are my next steps?
I have already installed the DSM 7 version of plex from “Plex.tv/downloads”. But when I try to open the app, it says “not authorized”. And If I just go to “app.plex.tv” and sign-in that way, I can’t get to my plex media server.

Thank you for the help!

Hello.

I have just purchased a 220+ NAS and am getting the “no soup” error message. I have been running Plex on an old PC for several years. I cannot seem to add my NAS as a server to the Plex list. Not much of a networking guy here so any advice and direction would be appreciated.
