Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

One question came to me adding other folder to my library

Why PMS need read AND write permission to work ? As all meta are stored in a database and dedicated hidden folders

Why does DVR need R/W ? – should be obvious
Why does normal need R?W? – It doesn’t . Read only is fine.

Keeping optimized versions with the media does require R/W.
R/O or R/W is use case dependent

Hey, I’m back

And wouldn’t you know I found an issue right off the bat. Synology - (DSM 7.0-41882) breaks the package install. Can confirm the issue is present on two different devices. DS1019+ and DS1520+

Seen the update for PlexMediaServer-1.23.2.4625-a83d2d0f9-x86_64_DSM7.spk and it just said noo :frowning:

I have the file format issue on my DS720+ as well.
Just did the upgrade from DSM6 to 7 and after setting permissions was able to get Plex 1.21.0.3744 running.

Same here with DS218+ and same versions of DSM and Plex server

Are you saying you were able to install an older version of Plex (1.21.0.3744) after the (DSM 7.0-41882) update?

Yes,
I was running 1.23 on DSM6. Then I upgraded to DSM7. DSM offered to repair, which failed. Then I set the permissions like stated above and then it worked.

Same here with DS118 and versions of DSM 7rc and Plex server. Issue with Invalid File Format.

I switched from DSM 7 Beta to DSM 7 RC. Plex was already running with the beta. When I now want to install the update (PlexMediaServer-1.23.2.4625-a83d2d0f9-x86_64_DSM7.spk), I also get an error message: ā€œInvalid file format. Please contact the developer.ā€

same issues, cannot updating from version 1.21.0.3744 to version 1.23.2.4625 with the warning message:ā€œInvalid file format. Please contact the developer.ā€

Same file format issues with DS216+II running : DSM 7.0-41882

TO ALL FOLLOWING HERE

  1. Just waking up (I worked very late last night)

  2. I was unaware Engineering was going to push another release.

  3. Let me figure out where we’re at and I’ll get moving.

I’m currently on DSM 7 Beta (41222) running Plex 1.23.0.4480. Would the upgrade to DSM 7 RC (41882) break Plex? Shall I upgrade to the latest version of Plex (1.23.2.4625) before migrating to DSM 7 RC?

Current Status:

DSM 7 - Build 41222

  • Can use the Synology packages from our downloads page

DSM 7 - Build 41882

  • Needs my updated package because of changes made by Synology.
  • We’re working with Synology to identify the bug in DSM 7 RC
    (They see the bug too)

Future

  • Synology is going to be making MORE breaking changes
  • They changed policy and Wizard files (my menus) may end up being removed.

INVESTIGATIONS

  • I do not know if the updated packaging is backward compatible with DSM 7 - 41222 (I would need a volunteer)

I can’t investigate and resolve packaging builds if I’m constantly trying to chase Engineering releases.

As of this moment, we are back to BETA , Manual Package build, status

( Breaking changes in the firmware is NOT ā€œRelease Candidateā€. It’s ā€œBETA 2ā€

This is my exact situation. Will keep monitoring this thread and use the releases from ChuckPa until he says otherwise.

@ytsejam1138 & ALL FOLLOWING HERE

If you have an existing DSM7 installation, having just upgraded to DSM 7-41882, my packages will keep you running for now. (Linked above)

They are the last packages which will be built until we and Synology get things in sync about how best to move forward

If you have DSM 7.0-41222, STAY on that firmware and you will be fine.

We’re in a situation where Synology keeps moving the goal post while declaring ā€œ2 minutesā€ . NOT professional on their part.

We are doing our best to work with them but this falls on them to resolve.

Thanks for your hard work Chuck. I know it is frustrating when external teams/dependencies shift rapidly. Good luck!

After a few attempts, i finally got a successful migration on 41882 using your 1.23.2.4600 package.
Previous attempts resulted in Plex working, but seemingly a failed migration (Plex share was non-empty).

Now that i’m in a working state, should i keep an eye out here for the next set of breaking changes? Or once you’re in a good place its pretty safe?

The migration process is extremely exacting (sorry about that but unavoidable).

When the instructions are followed verbatim, it works as written. Deviations, sometimes even the slightest – sorry, will result in things not completing.

I would strongly recommend not advancing DSM until we all know what state it’s in.

The last thing any of us want is a :brick:

If there are major fixes to PMS; sufficient to warrant hand-building a package, I will consider doing so. I will first have to clear that decision with management.

I’ve regressed from Version 1.23.2.4600 to Version 1.21.0.3744, having the same issue of invalid package after updating to DSM Version: 7.0-41882. Will await breaking update

Hi, your linked package works well for me but I just write to thank you for your big efforts and work you are doing…
Synology can often be an ass of a pain as company, it was so in the past and it will be in the future, unfortunately for all third party developing for their system :frowning:
Thanks again
