Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

I routinely just purge it. :smiling_imp:

It would be really nice if Scheduled Tasks removed anything > 30 days old …

Hey there. I followed you thread a week or so where you pushed the DSM 7 back to alpha (I believe) and installed via a special file you provided (@ChuckPa). I’ve noticed this didn’t install Plex in its usual path/directory. Any idea where it pushed the installation to? I can’t find it for the life of me and was looking to back things up.

Synology has gone out of their way to make it difficult.

Did have you have a chance to read this ?

The location of where Plex is: /var/packages/PlexMediaServer/home.

why not add support for Hyper Backup? Next to file shares, it has the capability to back up package settings (i.e. the plex library). I suppose that there has to be something in the package settings to make it Hyper Backup-compatible.

Integrating with Synology packages is a very difficult thing to do.

I’m not opposed to it but do require a lot of information from Synology.

Given what happened with DSM 7.0 - 41882 over DSM 7.0 - 41222,
and all the changes still coming for DSM 7.0 final release,

Our management decided to put a freeze on DSM 7 package support development until DSM stabilizes.

That said, I can’t (nor does it make sense to) look at adding anything until DSM 7.0 is actually ‘working & stable product’.

Hey PLEX Community

I’m new here and need some help. I bought a new DS920+ with HW en/decoding.
Happy I read Forum before installing DSM 7 RC (running DS 6:latest).

There are some benefits for me if I upgrade to DSM 7 (exFAT is free - new Foto app - need the face detection thing). So I tried DSM 7 RC in VM-Manager with Virtual DSM and PLEX via Docker.
Everything run smooth - except HW en/decoding. When i SSH it - there is no /dev/dri/ folder. If I make exact same setup on DSM 6:latest - i can run it in Docker with HW en/decoding.

I tried to search here and in synology forums and google. I did not find something about /dev/dri not aviable in Docker over VM.

Do I need to install DSM 7 without VM for accessing the /dev/dri folder?
Can someone who upgradet to DSM 7 RC check if /dev/dri exists with the files: card0 and renderD128? (Is this per default not aviable via VM and on top Docker)
Someone have a running HW - en/decoding docker running on DSM 7?

If yes - I would upgrade to DSM 7 and run Docker for PLEX in future.

Thanks already for Tipps and help

Edit:
I’m Stupid! It’s all on FAQ shame Using Hardware-Accelerated Streaming | Plex Support

Hardware-Acceleration Streaming is not currently possible inside of virtual machines, as virtual machine hosts do not expose low-level video hardware to the guest operating system. While some virtual machines expose generic 3D acceleration to the guest OS as a virtual driver, this does not include support for accelerated video decoding or encoding.

But maybe someone can tell me, if PLEX runs on DSM RC on Docker with HW en/decoding when installed without VM as ground. This would be great.

I don’t mean to be critical of the developer department or anything
but why can emby make updates to the newest dsm 7 but
plex doesn’t seem to be able to ?
Emby just came out with another update today and it install fine
on the RC version of DSM 7
Thanks

I corrected the problem within 3 days of DSM 7.0-41882 release. (I worked all weekend).

I’ve fixed the packaging so Plex works on both 41222 and 41882.

Is not available via the Downloads page ?

PS: I am the Synology Development Department

@sodaho

My recommendation: Hold off until DSM 7 is fully released.

DSM 7 is currently “A bag of hurt” to the developer if I try to do anything nice.

As “Linux”, it’s fine.

If you do upgrade, Make certain to follow ALL the migration instructions in those Popups (the “error” pages I display to perform migrating existing DSM 6 → DSM 7)

You really work 7*24 hours @ChuckPa  Thanks for the speed anwser <3
Yes I did read all the changes and the heat for the packaging-changes. This is a no go for a RC Version.

I would not upgrade. I would pull a clean install and use PLEX on docker. (It’s a new NAS and almost fresh and formated HDD’s - i’m just experminenting a bit atm). So I dont would need the App-Center anymore (for most apps). I’ve seen that most Applications I use and want to use - run over docker. And I learned this week a lot about it and how to use it. Docker is awesome

DSM 7 RC can HW-Transcode if I know how to bind /dev/dri to the docker image?

Thanks for your support and lot of useful information from you and the PLEX-Comm and Team on the forum.

@ChuckPa It looks like all your hard work hasn’t made it to the downloads page in regards to it working on the RC 41882 release yet.

Thank you all for the quick-fire replies.

  1. Binding --device /dev/dri:/dev/dri should be trivial
  2. I will , ummm…, “talk to” the team about getting my fixes out. There’s no reason it can’t be out there.

Plex in Docker on DSM 7 – OK – PROVIDED Synology didn’t remove Docker from your NAS offering. (They dropped Docker from my ARMv8 development system)

UPDATE:

Just checked the release and QA queues.

Synology update to:

  1. Remove “BETA” flag
  2. Adjust for DSM 7.0-41222 and DSM 7.0-41882 (formal “release” settings)

This is in the next release.

I can’t promise but looks like only a couple days away.

When you see the (Debian) fix for transcoding in the release notes, then Synology changes are in there with it.

If you know how docker works yes ^^ I needet a few hours to read how docker works for something like that. And even then I cheat with a modified config-file for syno-docker.

From DSM 7 or PLEX Package? Joke.

I searched if they will drop docker for 920+ also. It seems the “+” is my hero and they stopped docker for all non + devices… is there a HW reason to that because DSM 7 needs more CPU / RAM? I never understood, that Synology dont let the users install what they want. Maximum with a warning “system to bad - buy upgrade - try aniway”. At least docker has about no overhead and linux supports it on all kernel-versions. Hope they pull that back for you and all others.

Thanks a lot. I go sleep now and decide tomorrow if I will docker PLEX on DSM 7 random change RC or stay on DSM 6:latest and buy exFAT and use PLEX Photos until you offer the face-identity thing or DSM 7 leaves BETA. I hate to buy a Device short before a big release. I never would touch it if it is setup and running with everything. This is why I tried out so many things. If I setup this machine now on 6:latest - I stay until I dont have a choice for upgrading to DSM 7. Never change a running system without a really good reason.

If this was for me - i have no idea what it means.

Have a good time - and take care and a big thanks.

There are many, far better, tutorials and examples out on the internet about using Plex in docker.

I use Sonarr for all my OTA television ( No OTA within range here for a tuner )

  -d \
  --name sonarr \
  --network=host \
  -e TZ="EST" \
  -h usenet \
  -e PUID=1000 \
  -e PGID=1000 \
  -v /config/sonarr:/config \
  -v /nas/usenet:/usenet \
  -v /nas/download:/download \
  -v /nas/tv:/tv \
  -v /nas/tv2:/tv2 \
  -v /nas/tv3:/tv3 \
   linuxserver/sonarr:latest

sudo docker update --restart=unless-stopped sonarr
chuck@usenet:~$

My PMS runs native . I write the Linux, Synology, and QNAP packaging.
Knowing what I’ve built in, I don’t need docker on my Linux PMS machine.

If using PMS on a NAS, you do want Docker – for now – if you have any 4K UHD content. This gets you the tone mapping libraries.

Hi, kind of confused following here the thread, but I have made the “mistake” and upgraded to DSM7, trying to download the 4706 version and when I’m doing the manual install, it claims the package is on the invalid file format (I have the DS418). although the packaging seems the same as your last version placed here (4600), still it claims the wrong file format. any suggestions?

@Skywalkerwm I take it you missed this post?

Has anyone tried stopping Plex via cmd line?
I have just tired to stop Plex Media Server :
sh /var/packages/PlexMediaServer/scripts/start-stop-status stop

and I have returned to me:
“Plex Media Server is not running”

I know it is, as I can navigate around Plex and I am listening to music

I am running PMS 1.23.3.4706 and DSM 7.0-41882

Any thoughts?

You can’t stop Plex via the command line unless you setup the complete runtime environment Synology places PMS in.

There is an expression; “Bag of Hurt”.

This is the most succinct and accurate description of DSM 7 which i can think of.
