Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

Hi Chuck, sorry if this is repetitive, but is this still the most up to date instructions to install PSM on DSM 7 (public release version)? I have been reading all posts, but I am seeing people mention various steps and want to confirm.

Is it worth holding off for you to finish updates to the package for an easier install? If so, is there an ETA?

install is wrapping up now
 I must have a ton of metadata.

I followed the initial remediation steps assigning rights to PlexMediaServer of my existing plex directory – that too took about 20 minutes to complete.

Reran the install and waited a while for a couple operations to complete and then saw Package Manager kick-off a mv of my old plex directory to the new app folder that took forever. The interactive installer eventually timed out but I still see stuff running in the background.

The “mv” is still running and Package Manager reports Plex is still installing. Will be interesting to see how this ends.

Hello there. I actually install the latest dsm 7, then install plex 6 install the latest version as u described @ChuckPa . but I’m getting an error every time I try to play a new movie no matter the quality.

Thank you for this guidance.

But I am still confused

  • how do I verify that “PlexMediaServer” can only read, not write, to a particular folder?
  • And how do I verify that “PlexMediaServer” can neither read nor write to a particular folder?

Currently, the UI doesn’t show any permissions for any of the shared folders that contain my video content. Yet, content can be shared by Plex without issue.

@mpc

  1. Control Panel - Shared Folders – shows the permissions.

  2. Create a ttest case and verify. Create share, copy 1 file, don’t give PlexMediaServer permission to read it. See what happens.

If this is broken — https://www.synology.com (or your help app in DSM )

@hollman

  1. After upgrading to DSM 7 – DSM 6 packages are invalid and will not install nor will they run.

  2. Can you get me the Log files ZIP please ?

Sure.

well, that’s what I did if im not wrong. completely uninstall plex then install new version: PlexMediaServer-1.23.4.4712-1f0ed4aea-x86_64_DSM7.spk

plex_log.zip (17.2 KB)

@hollman

That log isn’t valid (did not survive )

Settings - Server - Trobuelshooting - Download Logs.

It will give you a ZIP file.

Please upload that ZIP file here directly.

@mpc

To provide you with definitive configuration information, which you can obtain yourself by extracting the SPK ( a ‘tar’ file ).

you will find:

[chuck@lizum files.508]$ cat conf/privilege
{
    "defaults":{
        "run-as": "package"
    },
    "username": "PlexMediaServer",
    "groupname": "PlexMediaServer"
}
[chuck@lizum files.509]$

User “PlexMediaServer” , in group “PlexMediaServer”, with no other privileges requested.

We don’t even install ourselves anymore. DSM does everything.
Synology has forbidden packages from using ‘root’ privilege.

my bad. find an attached new log file
Plex Media Server Logs_2021-06-29_18-40-08.zip (6.9 MB)

@hollman

Thank you. Those are great.

I see the android app tryig to play?

PMS sees a subtitle and is transcoding (burning).

I see something very odd and ask. 1750 KB/sec ? 1.7 Mbps ? Is this intended?

that’s a very low quality video

I’m not seeing a server or DSM problem.

I am aware of other Android problems.
Which version are you using? Is it the current release ?

Thanks to this thread and all the comments I just successfully upgraded my NAS to DSM7 and migrated Plex across. Migration took close to an hour, but not a single hiccup or problem experienced due to the tips, advice, and recommendations from everyone above. Especially @ChuckPa and his/her posts.

yes. from nvidia shield . latest player version installed.

1.7?? super weird I played always in original quality and almost all my movies are in 4k.

good to go here
 had to address some directory permissions for a couple of my libraries but all in all that wasn’t too painful of an upgrade.

Thanks for the walk-through @ChuckPa !!!

@hollman

That’s definitely not right.

I also have a shield. everything is direct play.

This is the 1.7 Mbps I see

Scaled up video bitrate to 1750Kbps based on 1.500000x fudge factor.

Do you have a pre-roll somewhere ?

I’ve been reading all the various posts and from what I gather the best course of action is to:

  1. Uninstall the current Plex 6 package
  2. Upgrade to DSM 7
  3. Reboot a second time
  4. Install Plex 7 package with specific instructions to set various permissions.

Are these three four documented at DSM 7 - Plex Media Server forum preview?

@Legends92

YES. The reboot ensures , for unknown reasons, the ‘Custom’ button appears.

Something goofy in DSM upgrade timing.

Question: if I am running Plex in a Docker container on my Synology, will I have problems updating to the just released DSM 7 release? Or does using Docker effectively allow me to ignore the frustrating issues you’re all dealing with? Thank you!

Docker is a WHOLE NEW bag of hurt.

DSM 7 removed Docker from my DS418j development system.

I can’t even begin to tell you how it will play but it’s not going to be pretty, that’s for sure.

I have no idea how you’re going to get to the hardware except as “root”
 and Synology is really NOT going to like that if they can prevent it.

Ugh. Well, thanks for the warning! I guess I’m going to ignore DSM 7 for a month or two and see where things end up landing. But this seems incredibly painful
