When i try to update manually PMS, with the downloaded update, i have 2 messages :
The package provided by third party developers is not verified by Synology. By clicking I agree, you agree that you are solely responsible for any damage to your device or any loss of data that may result from the use of this package.
OK i understand the idea. @trumpy81
With that, i will not have the same trouble that the last time when i move to DMS 7 ?
(For remember, i had to create a new folder (with the good permissions) to move the medias of the library.
@ChuckPa Also I forgot to mention that I am using a DS1815+ recently upgraded from DSM6 to DSM7, then I made the mistake of uninstalling Plex, but I left the setting and files. I know WTF was I thinking, but to my credit I at least had a second back up Synology NAS and I tested everything there before I tried on the live server, but I guess the settings must have been a bit different.
I had relatively good luck following the Cliff’s Notes version. I was successful after getting the message about Unavailable Media and then granting full control of my Media folder/files to PlexMediaServer. Didn’t see that in the instructions. Perhaps it should be included. Once I did that everything is working like a champ.
There are a few other things I noted along the way that might also be helpful to incude in the simple instructions:
After upgrading to DSM 7, make sure to re-enable default Admin user if disabled.
Be sure to sign in as Admin after rebooting NAS and before beginning PMS installer.
Cliffs Notes don’t mention whether do do a Normal Installation or Install using Plex Claim Token. I took Normal Install.
FYI, After canceling install because preinstallation checks have failed: PlexMediaServer does not have full control of existing Plex share, Package Center/Installed does not show a PMS package to uninstall.
Would be helpful to say just use the Plex shared folder as the log location. I did and it worked.
First install fails because there is no System Internal User PlexMediaServer for you have granted permissions to.
You see the error.
You can now assign the permissions as instructed in the popup to all sub-folders and files.
Now you can start through again after having assigned Full Control to System Internal User PlexMediaServer.
The package is then successfully installed, migration runs, and PMS starts.
I am considering (not yet decided) setting up a “PlexLogs” shared folder by default which can then be turned off or redirected elsewhere if you so choose.
Please bear with me, since I don’t see what you see. To me this indicates, which is also what I have setup, that I only have one plex share on a single standard volume1, and everything should be as preferred for migrations to happen, right? I only have one volume on this DSM, no external drives.

@ChuckPa I guess I have to make a clean install then, since upgrade obviously does not work for me for some reason.
Yes, I did try this and I continue to get the same error. I am redirecting Plex to the old Plex folder (/volume1/Plex), and I had tried changing the permissions for that folder and for the video folders that plex uses as well as any other media folders I had given Plex access to.
I suddenly remembered I had previous set up my Plex server to not be able to delete files unless I went to the advanced settings and checked the box under the library to delete files, I wonder if this needs to be updated? However since I have uninstalled Plex Media Server I no longer have access to change this setting. Could this be why the Plex share doesn’t have full control even though I have changed the share permissions? Let me know what you think. Thank you again.
So I have followed all the steps on that list and just re-read them to be safe. The one thing I don’t know for sure if I have done correctly is during this step I have directed PMS to the old share as part of the migration to /volume1/Plex (do I need to direct it to a sub folder?).
Can I install a fresh version of Plex and not do the one-time migration and then somehow copy the contents of the old Plex share to the new Plexmediaserver location and overwrite the metadata, watch history, and other data?
I really can’t understand how to access to the system folder “photo” where all my photos are stored, in order to use Plex and SynologyPhoto.
Synology doesn’t allow to use custom permissions on that folder, so no plexmediaserver user can “read” the folder.
I have recently, successfully installed DSM7 and updated Plex with help from this post, so THANK YOU!!. Everything works great for my Roku TVs. Installing the Plex package from the DSM package installer gave me PMS version 1.21.0.3744 (beta).
When I launch the server interface, I’m notified that there’s a new version(1.23.4.4805). Can I manually install this in DSM 7?
I ask because ALL of the users have issues with access from Android clients. If I attempt to play any video from my library on various Android devices all running the most recent Plex app available to them, I get the error “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”
I’ve read from users experiencing this that updating to the newest server version fixes things. I hesitate to do so for fear of breaking compatibility with DSM 7…
Can you please elaborate what you mean with point 7a?
As there was no package installed until this point, what do you mean with uninstall failed Plex package?
What does the additional information (Only if data in Plex share) mean?
In my case, there is still data persistent:
Is there a Plex Media Server folder with files in it ?
If so, this is your Server (data). Uninstall the DSM 7 package with Erase option.
When Installation & Migration are successful, I remove
a. All the media placement warning files
b. Library and everything below it (except any media files you pleased)
As you can easily under, this is not a smart move… with DSM6 everything was fine, so something happened between PMS for DSM7 and Synology. And the customers have to face some trouble.
Do you think that the fact that plexmediaserver user is not able to access the synology “photo” folder (system folder) could be a bug?
I believe that a lot of users will experience this issue.
I do not know with any certainty. The default video, and audio shared folders do not allow anything but Synology apps. I see no reason for photo to be different.
I believe this is deliberate. Only Synology can tell you.
