I received this error after exactly 1-hour

I followed the installation instructions for Plex on DSM 7 and now the Plex installer has been running for at least 15 minutes. Is this normal ?

The installation needed for me over one hour, look for the migration.log there you can see more, he migrate all so that what needs so much time. After this process my Plex was like it was before.

Thank you. I checked the amount of items in my Plex folder and it was over 400,000+.

me too. same deal. took over an hour and got that message. now i have no option to uninstall

okay, i was going to reboot but i saw that the package manager, specifically the process named “mv” was still running, and writing about 5mb/s. the lights were flashing on my drives, so stuff was still going on. i left it and grabbed lunch, and when i came back plex was up!

so… if you get that error, let it run until the package manager is done. my guess is the error is on a timer, but on big systems the install may be much longer than the timer.

Look at the contents of Plex/Migration.log

It shows current progress.

If you see the mv process running, the data is being moved into its new location – don’t restart

Logout timer can be set to 65535 minutes

Updated DS1091+ to DSM 7 and seemed OK. Gave error message on permissions which fix and seemed to do “repair” which all seems to work. The app says beat but I think there is a note about not using beta and get download from Media Server Downloads | Plex Media Server for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and More Listed there I’m not sure what’s the right one for DS1019+ Intel?? Also if I uninstall the one I have and reinstall I assume it doesn’t delete lib files?

I have followed a combination of all the steps above both using the install from synology and from Plex, but never get the message about upgrading. It installs just fine, but I cannot see my old plex library. It’s still in file station, but the plex app wants me to create a new server and can’t see the old one. Any ideas? Cheers

Okay I have some progress, I now at least have a PlexMediaServer folder that I did not have before, but it is still looking at a new server name that has no media nor my libraries in it. Is there a way to move my old libraries and media from the old “plex” shared folder to the new “PlexMediaServer” folder ?

@mwatNAS

Did you click through that final message when installation was complete about granting permission to the new System Internal User PlexMediaServer ?

PLEASE reread

WARNINGS:

DO NOT PLACE MEDIA ANYWHERE INSIDE THE PlexMediaServer SHARED FOLDER

  • Just as with DSM 6, put media in the wrong place and bad things happen.
  • Media can be placed anywhere else on the NAS except here.
  • NOTHING is gained by putting media in this shared folder.

“Internet Experts’” instructions are not welcome nor will they work with this new packaging.

It is a shared folder under the control of DSM, as is fragile.

PLEASE stay out of there and use the documented methods.

Granting permissions to your media

@mwatNAS

If you need to reclaim your server –

  1. Uninstall - KEEP option
  2. Reinstall the package on the same volume using the “Plex Claim Token” method.

To all who are using the new packaging forum preview

PLEASE:

  • STOP following any and all instructions from YouTube, Reddit, or other sites. – It no longer applies. This is my code. I will gladly answer any and all questions.

  • FOLLOW the documented instructions. They work when followed as written.

If folks do not follow the documented procedures without learning the new rules and limitations of DSM 7 – THERE IS GOING TO BE HEARTBURN.

Understanding the extreme limitations of DSM 7 are paramount to successful changes outside those documented.

  1. There is no regular Plex user. It is now a system internal (service class) user with no login which isn’t visible except in Control Panel - Shared folders

  2. Package installation doesn’t afford us ANY permissions during installation. If file permissions get broken – PMS fails and we can’t fix it.

Personal request:

Please follow my advice & instructions and please don’t try to “hack” it as in the past.

  1. Put media in shared folder. for media

  2. Please leave the “PlexMediaServer” Application shared folder alone. I got it to be visible for
    a. backups
    b. Plug-ins
    c. Not for media.

  3. PLEASE heed the “DO NOT PLACE MEDIA HERE” files. They exist for very specific reasons.

  4. DSM 7 is now a closed software architecture. It’s nothing like DSM 6.

Cheers Chuck! Thanks for the quick response. that message never came up on my machine when i did the install. Right now I have two folders, the new PlexMediaServer and the old plex server. and i have uninstalled plex completely. have you got any advice on how to proceed. thank you.

@mwatNAS

If you look at the Migration log, do you find that it shows success ? last lines)

Start: Migrate Plex Media Server (when it started moving data)
Completed: Migrate Plex Media Server (when it finished moving data)

At this point, by design, the “Plex” shared folder is 100% free for you to use.
If you want media there , that’s 100% OK.

On DSM 7, the only thing you need to do is:

  1. Control Panel - Shared Folders - EDIT the shared folder containing media
  2. Permissions tab
  3. Change “Local User” to “System Internal User”
  4. Grant “PlexMediaServer” the appropriate level of permission you wish.

The process is the same as was in DSM 6 but this dropdown was changed in DSM 7 by the new software architecture which made Plex a system service app

Sorry if I’m a bit possessive of the new PlexMediaServer shared folder.

This was a lot of hard work bringing it back to being visible to the administrator for Backup purposes (primary reason).

DSM 7 hides so much now and it’s beyond the package scripts ability to fix anything.
We used to have administrator rights at startup. Now we have nothing. That’s a big change and, as you see by all the steps in the migration procedure, hard to circumvent.

All good, totally understand. Thanks for such a quick turnaround.

There is no migration log on mine, I have done the permission changes and double checked them.

When installing, It never brings up the prompt to perform the migration and the spinning “installing” which is when I understand the migration should be taking place only stays on the screen for about 20 seconds.

This is all I get when I run the install, and I have followed these steps, I do not get the window at the top you showed.

Media Unavailable

So sadly I entered this forum too late, so am not sure I followed the instructions correctly. So far I have done the following:

  • Updated to DSM 7 (without uninstalling Plex)
  • Uninstalled Plex
  • Installed PlexMediaServer-1.24.0.4897-411e7667f-x86_64_DSM7 (Failed)
  • Edited user permission for Plex to the Plex folder
  • Installed PlexMediaServer-1.24.0.4897-411e7667f-x86_64_DSM7 (Successes)
  • Verified plex user has read/write to my media folders
  • Rescan meta data
  • Restarted the NAS

Still, when opening the Plex client all meta data seems to be there, but for each video it says: “Unavailable”. Thanks for all help and support!

@Runberg

Please show the shared folder permissions for “PlexMediaServer”
and show the library definition as to where the media is stored.

User permissions for user Plex do not apply in DSM 7
