Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

Once it is production, will it be updatable via the Plex notification and download? (ie if I download and install 2.0 now, once it becomes production will the Web interface notify us of downloads and allow us to download and update as “normal”?)

Cheers too, this thread has been very useful!

Once this is production, it will be just like everything else.

We did this same “out of band” updating while developing for DSM 7.

It worked well as long as folks didn’t panic

This will be a short preview. It’s not as substantial as the initial development was

Sorry for my stupid question but I’m a bit confused about the two different user groups “User” and “System internal user” on DSM 7.

  1. Has the new System internal User “PlexMediaServer” replaced the old user “plex” which belonged to the group “video” from DSM 6?
  2. If this is a replacement, is is save to remove the group “video” with its User “plex”?

Thanks.

It is completely safe to remove user Plex.

DSM 7 forced us to change everything.

We had to change the internal package name → PlexMediaServer
Packages needed a new username → PlexMediaServer was chosen for consistency
In changes I have coming, I will continue to use PlexMediaServer

OK, so I will remove the user Plex. thanks.
So I guess the group “video” which the user Plex was it’s only member can be removed too?

there’s no harm leaving it.

At this point, not knowing EVERY intricacy of DSM 7.0-41890, I would rather let it sit there as an empty group. There is no security risk being empty.

Good point. Didn’t thought that it’s privileges could be used in the future.

BTW: I usually just left as much accounts active as needed and remove old users but on the other hand there is always my computer guardian angel saying:

 Never touch a running system!

Thanks again, Chuck. Appreciate your help! :+1:

Touching it is one thing. (they like being caressed some times  )
Making changes while live is a no-no unless you’re fixing the live production system

BTW, thanks guys for great support and feedback. Looks like I’m up to date and running on current Prod

PlexUpdate

Have downloaded and installed from the 2.0 thread - all seamless and working perfectly, thank you!

Now I can see my Plex folders files again, can I just check something with you please?

I have always backed up the “databases” folder in Plug-in Support>Databases. Should I also be capturing the preferences.xml file? If so, how do I do that as Hyper Backup doesn’t see the individual files - do I need to backup the full “Plex Media Server” folder?

Apologies of this is a stupid question, would hate to do the wrong thing at this point!

I’m a danish Plex and Synology DS220j user who upgraded to DSM 7.0 without first uninstalling Plex. Now when I try to follow the guides (PLEX forums and Blackvoid) I’m unable to make it work. Any way to start from scratch and catalogue the media again?

Just upgrade to DSM7 on my Synology NAS (DS218+). Followed all instructions to the letter and manually installed the full release latest version of Plex for DSM 7, today, from their website, for my Intel 64 architecture, and unclaimed and reclaimed Plex Media Server with a claim code.

All of my media shows up as thumbnails in my Plex client, and I’ve re-scanned all my libraries.

However, upon trying to play anything, it simply gives the same “Playback error: please check that the file exists and that the necessary drive is mounted”. Same result for all movies, TV/DVR recordings, and photos.

I’ve ssh’d into the server, and verified that all the files are there. I’ve given Plex permissions to the media volumes as described step by step, and verified the permissions are correct when logged into a shell window. The playback error persists.

Your help is appreciated! The client sees the files, creates thumbnails, scans all the files, but won’t play anything.

If you look in the Plex shared folder, do you see “Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” ??

If you do then your metadata did not migrate and we will take one path.

If there is nothing there, we will take another path.

Please advise.

@Kman21

Be very careful. Plex ? or PlexMediaServer ?

I will need to see your log files

@ChuckPa
You solved it–I had changed the permissions for the local user Plex instead of the system internal user PlexMediaServer. I changed them for PlexMediaServer and all is well.

Thank you for your support!

If I may “Pull your chain” a bit?

When all else fails → R.T.F.M.

Glad you got it working

Brilliant, thanks.

So just to backup the “Databases” folder only?

Thanks for the swift response. No the mentioned folder is not there.

Does Plex require at all AFP service on Synology to be running?

I am running DSM V7.0 and have installed PMS PlexMediaServer-1.23.6.4881-e2e58f321-x86_64_DSM7.spk. The server is running and the client (on Roku) can see the database and access all the actual media files (I assigned the permissions to all media shares as indicated in instructions).
Question: I still have the directory Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server on the Plex share fully populated! I thought this was to be migrated “somewhere else”. Can I please get an explanation as a post above says “I am free to DELETE the Plex share” if I choose??
