Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

So in the future I will definitely check these forums first.

What happened is I upgraded to DSM 7. It gave me the option to repair Plex Media Server. I did, and Plex didn’t work. I then manually installed the newest version from Plex.tv/downloads. And then this didn’t work. Google then led me here.

So then I tried uninstalling the newest version and installing the one in this forum. And going through the steps. However I probably already broke it completely.

I don’t really care if my only option is to start over completely as long as my media doesn’t get erased.

You could have recovered from the Repair by using “Uninstall + ERASE” to eradicate the broken DSM 7 installation (all your metadata still sits in the Plex share).

That’s we’ll do when you’re home –

Make certain all your metadata still exists in the “Plex” shared folder,
We’ll erase the DSM 7 installation,
Make certain your DSM idle timeout is set high enough so you don’t get logged out.
Install the new Preview Package version.

At that point, you’ll be all set with your existing server migrated.

Hi ChuckPa , sorry for being away for so Long  how are You so Far ?
I wonder if I can Just Upgrade at these days with the official Version downloaded From Plex Website Now ? I can still

only see Plex as a Beta Packages in Package center and with a newer version with a lower PaK number than the 1 I had installed long time ago with You …

@Renato-Merlin

Hi!

Yes you have been away for some time.

Ignore Package Center. Synology is very far behind updating 3rd party applications.

While you’ve been away, I have been able to resolve some of the bad problems we had with DSM 7 & Plex.

That work is complete and now available to everyone here as “Preview”.

It will be in a general Plex release soon.

You can try it now or continue to use the Plex.tv/downloads version.

My new package changes don’t require any interaction and are almost instantaneous .

Whatever you’d like to do

I’m home now and ready to try to fix what I did. Thanks for all your help btw

Please go check the Plex shared folder.

We’re looking to confirm you have a full, valid, “Plex Media Server” directory under “Library / Application Support”

It must contain

  1. Preferences.xml – likely last accessed/modified on the day you upgraded.
  2. Media – with a bunch of files there (separated by type)
  3. Metadata – siimilar to Media
3.“Plug-in Support/Databases” - which contains your databases and their backups

If all that exists, we’re in good shape

  1. Stop Plex

  2. Uninstall + ERASE the DSM 7 package

  3. It will take a bit but not more than a few extra seconds.

  4. Next, please read here and see the changes I’ve made in the new packaging.

  5. Please also be advised - This version is not backward compatible with Production. You can’t go backwards – HOWEVER, Production will be updating to his very shortly so you won’t be “Stuck on this version” for long

  1. Download the appropriate SPK for your Syno

  2. Manual Install it.

Just to confirm, I do have all those files in my Plex shared folder.

Also, I just want to confirm I’m downloading the correct version for my Synology. I have the DS920+.

Here is the Synology link to confirm which CPU

https://kb.synology.com/en-global/DSM/tutorial/What_kind_of_CPU_does_my_NAS_have

DS920+ = Intel J4125 = X86_64

All Intel processors can be found by searching: “Ark Intel processor_here

Thanks, so that’s the one I downloaded. I’ve tried to install it and it says “installing” but it’s been saying that for 5 minutes, which seems long. Is that normal?

@thehabsfan00

YEP… NOW you are performing an actual migration. This is how it should be

You can monitor the progress:

  1. Separate tab
  2. Open the Syno again
  3. Plex share
  4. “Migration.log” – shows you where it’s at in the process.

PS: Some users, with 550 GB of metadata, have needed 2 weeks to migrate

I do have the Migration.log now so it seems to be working! Thanks!!

I’m checking the size of my Metadata folder now and it’s 4.59 Gb.

Piece of cake – it won’t be long.

If you get logged out by DSM, Come back in and watch Migration.log

You’ll know when it’s done. (last task is cleaning the Plex share)

So does this mean that my media will now be in the Plex Media Server folder or will it still be in the Plex share folder. Reason I ask is I use Sabnzbd, Radarr, and Sonarr through Docker and it automatically downloads files and moves them to the proper folders. Will I have to change the settings of these apps?

Media will sit intact in the Plex share if you put anything therer. I won’t touch it.
All your other apps will work as they have. I don’t touch anything except where PMS is stored.

Please do NOT EVER put media in the new PlexMediaServer shared folder.

That is for the Application’s Use ONLY!!!

There are 2 full sets of warnings to NOT place media there. Please honor my request.

You have the Plex share. That’s for you to use as you wish.

Perfect, thank you. Just making sure.

It finished installing and it works! Thanks so much!

:+1:

That wasn’t so painful was it?

Strangely enough, no. I had uninstalled it and reinstalled it a few times before this and for some reason this is the one that worked. I wonder if my permissions were wrong the first few times and finally now they were correct.

It’s very possible. The key is : PlexMediaServer (not plex) must have Full Control of all files & folders in the Plex share for it to work.

DSM 7 may look mostly the same to you in the GUI but to me, it’s completely changed underneath.

I had to recreate everything from scratch then also figure out how to move everyone from the old environment (DSM 6) to this new and more restrictive environment (DSM 7) without losing any data.

It’s not a pretty process but it works. Fortunately, it’s a one time event.

Don’t forget to change the Permissions for your other shared folders .

System Internal User - PlexMediaServer gets permission.
You can delete user “Plex” now and forget it ever existed.

Much appreciated for all the work you’ve put in it (and the rest of the team of course). I just migrated from DSM 6 to DSM 7, and had to update the Plex Media Server as well.

Initially after a complete uninstall of PMS, the new PMS package seemed to have added a regular Plex user as well, which threw me off guard since I couldn’t get my media to be scanned into the library. I made a topic regarding that and a @philrigby brought to light that there’s actually a System Internal User called “Plexmediaserver” where you can also add the required permissions… which solved the issue entirely.

After getting it to work, I deleted the regular Plex user which didn’t break anything, so :+1: problem(s) solved, and Plex is back in working order again!

After reading the above topic, I noticed you also mentioned the System Internal User @ChuckPa, so I wanted to thank you as well for the clarification.
