Plex server running on unraid with p2200 for transcoding. Overkill yes, but then i wanted great performance. That was the theme when I built my server.
Fast forward now the video thumbnails for tv shows isn’t working on Android tv clients for myself and other users. My series are matched and named as per Plex requirements. Also double checked the “Generate video thumbnails” is checked, NVME of 1tb is plenty empty. I’ve analysed my library multiple times, to no solution.
I’ve personally also checked my clients accounts and i face the same issue.
The funny part is, when i run the Plex app on Android phone, everything works fine. I wouldn’t be able to tell the exact date/version where it was working fine, but today I needed it for something and it didn’t work. Been breaking my head for a while now and couldn’t get it resolved. Anyone else with a similar issue?
Um, I was a bit lost when I last read your question, so I didn’t chime in when you first posted. But it seems like nobody else has any ideas either, so let me ask a question of two to clarify.
Did the thumbnails generate at all? You say “everything works fine” on the plex app for Android phone, but that seems to me to be an odd thing to say when you are trying to see the video thumbnails.
One thing to try is to Plex Dance one show/movie in particular. Keep an eye on the Activity icon in the upper right of a browser when you re-add the file/files. Make sure that you see the “Generating video thumbnails” action happens. For me on my beefy server, it occurs pretty quick per file (5 seconds per half-hour episode), so keep a close eye on it while you add the files back in.

I hope I can answer all questions. @Divideby0 the app and all the videos work fine on all devices. No complaints except the Video Preview Thumbnails only for TV show. Explained further in this post.
The VPT are generated in the activity when a show is added. I can see the wheel spinning and when I click it goes through updating metadata for each episode, detecting intros for season, generating chapter preview and generating video preview in random order. @Volts The movies VPT are working absolutely fine on android/ipad and android TV
The VPT for shows (I have 4 libraries with TV shows) work seamlessly on ipad and android phone but don’t show anything when I’m forwarding on my Android TV. Also i do click up before i forward/back to select the seek bar and then use the seek bar to go back or forward in the video. The clients I have are multiple browsers/android phones/ipad and a few android TV. I also have a Roku buried somewhere in the house. If needed i can find it, but the more i think, it seems to be an android TV issue.
No updates on my end. Only Android TV clients suffering.
I tried Roku and it works perfectly. Other (brand) clients also reporting no issues.
PS I have stopped the update of Android Home coz of the new layout. Would you think that could be an issue? It shouldn’t affect Plex in anyways, but i don’t know. I’ve thought and tried a lot of things. None seem to work and also I seem to be one of the only people to have this issue.
Having the same problems here: Video Thumbnails on and generating for TV Shows, and works on all my Roku and Web clients (can scrub FF and RWD and see the preview thumbnails). But Nvidia Shield, Tivo Stream, Fire TV clients (yes I have all three) are no longer showing preview thumbnails as a scrub fwd and back. This is a recent problem as all my Android clients used to work fine.
Came here looking for answers on the same issue. Thumbnails are not working for TV shows anymore. Movies work fine which is weird. They also play fine on my Android phone. Running 4k fire stick with latest Plex client.
As of this post (10/18/2022) – I have no thumbnails for TV shows on Plex player -Android, Nvidia Shield. Thumbs are generated and visible in other clients. Server is PMS docker running on Unraid. All software is current/updated as of today.
