Plex Server Crashes Mac OSX Big Sur 11.0.1

Correct, no kernel panic…just an instant app crash.

For TripMode users: They’ve released an updated version that includes a workaround for the issue. In very brief testing, it avoids the macOS panic. Downloadable here:

Also, Apple appears to have resolved this in the macOS 11.1 dev beta released today. Adventurous folks can jump on the dev beta, or Apple usually releases it as a public beta within a day or two.

Edit: Apple has released the 11.1 beta to public testers, too.

I am having the same issue with my iMac (Big Sur Beta). How can i workaround with tripmode? also, is there any way to fix this problem with an update?

I’m running the newest version of the Big Sur and Plex as of this date^
PMS does not crash the iOS entirely, however PMS “refuses” to open or app quickly crashes because the logo flashes quickly and meekly in the menu bar once. Please advise----- everything worked fine before I updated my OS

I had this too. Remove the library (everything in /Plug-in Support/Databases), and it will work again. Downside: you’ll have to rebuild the library from scratch.

really?

There might be other ways to do it and keep your old library - but nuking the whole library definitely fixes it, as far as I can see.

sad, but resolved. Thank you Certuna

This might be because the old library had references to filepaths that no longer exist or are no longer accessible to Plex in Big Sur, so it (not very gracefully) crashes? The application sandbox/filesystem rights are getting tightened with each macOS version. Just speculating here though.

yes probably changed filepaths. frustrating but its OK, at least it’s compatible. better than crashing the whole dang computer! Thank you Plex for everything

I disabled DLNA and no more crashes. Thanks.

Same thing for me. :pensive:

Yuck! If that’s happening to anybody else, it’s worth sharing your Plex logs.

@certuna, when you rebuilt the library, did you have to grant Plex permission to access your filesystems?

Same issue… Disabled DNLA & all works again. This isn’t the first time I’ve had a kernel panic due to PMS & Mac… Once the issue is resolved I will enable it again. I upgraded to Big Sur & instantly had the issue once the new Little Snitch 5 was installed! At least nothing is really wrong. I found out about these issues after Apple repaired my computer in March due to the “Kernel Error”. After it came home it did it again! I new it wasn’t a hardware issue, it was PMS!!!. I found a discussion from Europe that explained it. Don’t rebuild library’s & go insane, less is more. Disable DNLA until they fix it.

May I ask why you want to have DLNA enabled? Check activity monitor when enabled, it’s a bit thirsty on resources when they may not be used.

I have a Blu-Ray player on my network with a media server that up-converts video files. I don’t use it often but it makes some older TV shows look better. I actually never noticed the resources it used or had any adverse effects from it. I will keep it off if I don’t really need it.

Thanks

Ok, so the Blu ray player has no HDMI ports or is it your TV has not HDMI. That would be a better way to go. Modern 4K TV have scalers, which work really well

I knew I didn’t explain that right. I have a region free 4-K player that also sees home media servers on the network. It sees Plex running and has it’s own basic interface to the library. It looks better with some titles…

when you rebuilt the library, did you have to grant Plex permission to access your filesystems?

No I didn’t have to grant Plex any extra permissions, I can just make a new library, navigate to the media folder (it’s on another volume), add. Just like before on Mojave.

Plex also doesn’t appear in System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Privacy/Files And Folders. I don’t know if it should.

FWIW it appears there’s two different issues being discussed in this thread: one is where DLNA seems to cause a full blown kernel panic, the other one is where an old library (migrated from the old macOS system) causes Plex to silently crash when it starts. I encountered the latter.

Hi, I too am having the problem of the server refusing to run after updating to Big Sur, can you please explain how I disable DLNA
Thanks.
