Synology Plex not finding all files

Server Version#: DSM 7.2-64570 Update 3
Player Version#: 1.32.5.7349-7000

I recently got a DS1823xs+ and copied all my Movies (385) and TV shows (106) from a QNAP to the new Synology.

I installed the latest version from Plex and gave the folder the correct permissions (I state this as when researching the issue this is the bulk of all I could find)

I then added these folders into Plex for the new Syn, however only 80 movies and 53 TV shows are found.

I don’t think my issue is a permissions issue, as some of the files are found.
I don’t think my issue is a naming issue, as they were found fine on Qnap, it was only the new Syn that is not seeing them.

I have verified the movie titles are named correctly (Filebot) and moved unfound files out of the folder and back in 1 by 1 and 10 by 10, however these are still not found.

I have removed the 2 folders and re-added them, however the same values 80 and 53 are found.

As previously stated, all I can find is resolutions that talk about the permissions issues, not issues where correctly named (and found on Qnap) files are not seen or added.

Can anyone please point me in a meaningful direction?

Cheers

File naming/organization could still be an issue… the current-generation of Plex scanners/agents are usually better than the legacy agents… but they also tend to be more strict when it comes to naming. So if your QNAP used to run based on those old agents, a new setup using the new agents might still run into some trouble.

That being said… this can be a likely scenario for your tv-shows… it shouldn’t have that big of an impact on a movie library.

As for permissions… can you confirm for what DSM account you’ve granted access to your media? DSM 6 and 7 are very different when it comes to that. There’s still a log of older guides out there referring to the old DSM 6 approach.

If it’s none of those, your server logs might show some pointers as for why those other files aren’t being picked up.

To add to @tom80H’s post…

Two documents that may be of assistance:

Regarding the location of your media files:

  • Do not use the default folders created by Synology. Those are for use by Synology’s apps. DSM has a nasty habit of resetting permissions and removing read access for Plex.
  • Consider making a new shared folder, such as /media, to hold your files. You can then create movie, tv show, etc folders within /media. This avoids conflicts with Synology apps and is mentioned in the documents linked above.

Regarding permissions, here’s the short version:

  1. Open File Station.
  2. Right click on the folder holding your media & choose Properties.
  3. Select Permission Tab
  4. Make sure PlexMediaServer has at least read permission to the folder (Edit if necessary).
  5. Important: Check the box for “Apply to this folder…”
  6. Save
  7. Wait for DSM to finish checking/setting permissions.
  8. Then, in Plex, re-scan your libraries

Thanks for the info - For the time being I set the Syn Plex up as new so it is working on detecting intro, but I am going to delete it all and start again.

I will add movie by movie and triple check the naming conventions for each (Qnap was set up maybe 8 years ago, so it def used the less strict agents)

For the permissions, I had already done what the next post by FordGuy61 outlined, and gave the PlexMediaServer read/write permissions including for all sub’s.

I then created a new folder, did the permissions again and changed Plex to create a new Films folder however this only found the original 80 files that were found when I first started.

For now, I might delete and restart, with permissions being done first, and I’ll come back begging on my knees if I get stuck, thanks!

Thanks for the linked help pages mate! I will do a few things and read them and come back with more questions if I get stuck! thanks

Shut up, I removed Plex and all associated accounts and servers, I uninstalled 1.32.5.7349-7000 and installed the currently latest offered 1.29…
Made a new server, and added movies - all 385 were found! I am going to make sure my tv shows have proper naming and do that tomorrow!

thanks for your time and assistance lovers! peace x

2 posts were split to a new topic: Synology: Plex can’t find all my music

Just to be crystal clear: Plex has loaded 4,409 out of 9,735 of the artists in my collection. And since I can’t find a way to determine the total number of actual files that are in my Plex library, I can’t figure out how many FILES are missing. In my random sampling of playback, several albums only have one or two tracks in them, and many albums by some artists are missing completely. Obviously, it has lots of content loaded, but I’ve been trying since September to force scan, not force scan, add the target folders, remove them, re-add them, with no progress towards completion.

The path I have used is: /volume1/PlexMediaServer/Media/Music

Move your media out of the PlexMedisServer folder. It is reserved for the internal working of Plex. That is why there are messages in six languages saying, “Do not put media here.”
