Within the past week Plexamp on both my iPhone and iPad no longer play back even when on local network, just shows a blank screen and spinning gear. I can see the library and view albums/tracks, etc but simply won’t play.
Plexamp on my computer (same network) however works just fine.
PMS Dashboard shows no activity when trying to play from iPhone/iPad. Have tried restarting devices, signing out/in of Plex, no dice.
I might think it’s a device or network issue BUT both devices can play music from the library just fine if I access Plex through Safari.
I have made ZERO changes to Plex or settings since this started; maybe PMS autoupdated at some point?
Here’s logs, any ideas? Am I the only one? Plexamp.1.log (138.5 KB)
May 21, 2025 11:35:20.988 [0x6c86b000] INFO - Cache: Network error (404) occurred (retry: 0), we might want to kick off recovery (still 0 bytes in network buffer).
Looks like the server can’t find the file.
The computer version might have cached tracks?
You could post the corresponding media server logs but it seems like your server can’t access the files you’re trying to play.
One thing I forgot to mention that I did do prior to this was remove all tracks from the library to redo the metadata tags in MusicBrainz (had crazy amounts of mismatches), then did Plex Dance on the library and re-added all tracks back into Plex.
Long story short, any cache on the server should be ‘new’ and is indeed working properly on the server (with new meta and album art) when accessed via browser.
Any reason you can see why Plexamp would be the odd man out in this scenario?
that sounds kind of problematic but i’m not sure why Plexamp would be the only one. please, for the love of god, post server logs after a failed playback
Oops, forgot to come back here and wrap up with the solution!
In the end it took:
logging out
force quitting Plexamp in iOS (by swiping it away in the app switcher interface)
logging back in
It seems that Step 2 was the vital ingredient, since I had previously logged out and back in as one of my first troubleshooting steps but it hadn’t solved the problem. Following these steps worked the first time on both iPhone and iPad.
Also want to take a quick moment to shout out @elan and sincerely thank him for the extremely thorough support in PM’s. Absolute legend!
Hmm, that doesn’t really make sense to me The only thing I can think of is that may have been a particularly violent way to clear your caches. Whatever works, though!
Experienced this same issue. Up to date plexmediaserver and plex amp apps. Desktop plexamp works fine locally and on internet hotspot. Only issue is ios plexamp.
Logout, swipe up to force quit app, then log back in fixed it.
I had tried this without force quitting in between and it didn’t fix it. Thanks dmurph.
