PlexMediaServer-1.15.4.994-107756f7e-x86_64

*help me offering you…

Yes, same issue running on Synology 216.

Installed this version update and it immediately broke the server connection to all devices. Went through all of the troubleshooting steps, checked firewalls, rebooted things, reinstalled it from a fresh download in case the first one got corrupted somehow… and nada, nix, broken.

Uninstalled and went back to version 1.15.4.993, signed out of all devices and back in again. Everything returned to normal.

Version 1.15.4.994 is broken.

@Guy_B, killdozer’s tips for me did the job!
994 is running here.

Thanks @yoeps, I’ve just been reading through that now…

I’ll give that a go if Plex doesn’t fix it, basic enough, although I’m still a bit mystified why users should need to use the command line to edit file permissions in order to make an update work properly.

I might just wait until the next update or see if they release a hotfix before I spend any more time on it, as to me it sounds like Plex made a mistake and they should should fix it rather expect users to run sudo commands to repair the error, especially one that is permissions related.

If I may add here?

The forum eats \ characters unless you escape them with another one
To show a \, either use code (single back tick) for the line or triple-back tick for the block as I do below

Manually setting permissions on your media, which bypasses Synology’s burp (this has happened before),

find ./my_media_folder_name_here -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
find ./my_media_folder_name_here -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

You may list multiple directories, e.g.

cd /directory1 /directory2 /directory3 ..... rest of command here ....

Running PMS on a Synology DS418.

Different problem for me, the pre-existing music is all fine but this new version 1.15.4.994-107756f7 will not scan any new music at all.

All fixed by reverting to previous version 1.15.2.793-782228f99.

Just to confirm, an uninstall followed by installing an earlier version seems to leave the accumulated metadata untouched.

Version 1.15.4.994 broke my NAS. I spent hours on google looking for .993 and I would find it but not for Synology devices. .994 wont update my media folders when I put in a new media file and sees all of my media being unavailable too and nothing plays. Thanks to you I just downgraded to version 1.15.4.993 and everything is working as it once was.

On my DSM415+, all media was “unavailable” after I “upgraded” to 994, so I uninstalled it then restored version 993 from a copy that I coincidentally stored on the Synology, and I’m back in business

I want to apologize for both the late reply and that my security update got out to public before the release notes & notification did.

The change, which you all are seeing is a security fix. It was a security bypass from DSM 4.x, and 5.x days which is no longer needed.

This was brought to my attention by a number of users. After discussing it, we agreed it was time to put PMS back to normal.

That ‘normal’ is:

  1. Plex is no longer in the administrators group
  2. Plex no longer has elevated privileges (even though it never overtly used them).

The one danger, which some of you are experiencing is:

  1. You unwittingly and without your knowledge, had shares created through your admin user account which were being accessed by Plex (which also was an administrator).
  2. Everything “kinda worked” but not really.
  3. My correction does the following to normal Plex operation.
  • Plex cannot access any share on your Synology unless you give it permission in Control Panel - Shared Folders - Edit the share - Permissions tab.
  • It will only have those permissions you expressly grant it. None, Read/Write, or Read Only
  • Your media now has an extra layer of protection from accidental deletion.
  • User plex is a ‘normal user’, just like any other user account you create in DSM. No special privileges of any kind with exception of being a member of the video group so it can still access Hardware Accelerated Transcoding on those Synology models which support it.

I will do my best to get the formal Security Announcement released today (Friday - 10-May)

Exactly same problem & going back to version 993 solved it.
SHAME ON PLEX DEVELOPERS, SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

Made an update to version PlexMediaServer-1.15.5.994-4610c6e8d-x86_64.spk. That helps.
What a mess.

Yoeps, I have just posted a rant echoing your sentiments. makes you wonder just how much testing was done prior to release. Wouldn’t mind if we were able to contact PLEX and have a conversation, but NO, you’re on your own…all they do is direct you to the forums. This is a classic example of when their reputation takes a hammering. No notification of possible problems following the .994 update…you’d think they’d be aware of it by now. A day is one day too late.

Think I’ll follow your lead and revert to the previous version .993

Cheers!

I’m in exactly the same predicament. I run a Synology DS918+. How do I get hold of the previous version again (.993)??

JESUS!

Hi Chuck,
This update didn’t cause any issues for me as I was giving permission to Plex user for each share and folder I wished from my very first PMS installation.
However, I noticed that the Plex user is still a member of the administrators group in this latest update, as well as the default group, in addition to video group as you mentioned in your post.
It is normal, shall I remove Plex user from administrators and default groups?
Thanks

@Mulatoboy what i did is: uninstall PMS 994 via the Package Center. After that i installed PMS 993 which i downloaded from:
https://luenepiet.de/public/Synology/Plex%20(Server)/Intel%20-%2064-bit/?C=M;O=D

Good luck!

Yoeps, just wanted to thank you sincerely for your help. I was finding it IMPOSSIBLE to get previous versions until you pointed me in the right direction. Suffice to say I have now bookmarked that page. I have uninstalled the latest update and reinstalled .993. Everything is working perfectly once more.

THANKS dude!!!

This thread is interesting.

  1. There are those who rant about QA and developers who didn’t read what I wrote above.
  2. There are those who rant about QA and developers who don’t understand what I wrote above and didn’t bother to ask.
  3. There are those who want a reason to rant apparently just for the sake of ranting.
  4. If the above fail, please ask me. I have been and always will be available to answer and help anyone who isn’t being a troll.

To those who fall into any of the above categories, I say this: READ IT AGAIN

What does it all mean?

Give user Plex permission to read your media shares the way you should have been since the beginning which is how it should be.

A post was split to a new topic: Importing iTunes Playlists on Synology

I actually welcome the change being done to the plex user, getting rid of a no longer needed workaround is a good thing, everyone should be aware of that!

Maybe communication of this change could have been better though as I also ran into problems a couple days after updating to the new version.

I am pretty sure I had my plex user rights set up correctly before but the update seems to have changed them so I had to fix them again. What ultimately was missing though seems to be a reboot of the NAS. After that it seems to be working fine again.
