PS5 App will not connect to Local Servers

Thank you so much!!! That fixed it for me as well!!!

Cheers, this sent me in the right direction to eventually fix this issue for me. My TalkTalk router does’t have the option to turn off this DNS Rebinding thing, but changing my Primary and Secondary DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, and rebooting my router, sorted the connectivity issue.

I would also like to add that buffering is an issue now. When fast fwdg on any content it buffers forever until you close the media then open it again. Both the server and the console are using patch cables. This means chapter selection and skipping intros takes longer than actually watching them.

so i turned on secure connections to “Preferred” and now my PS5 loads up my libraries but it just hangs and eventually i get a message saying it’s offline or unreachable. i then noticed that ALL my other devices (PS4, rokus, ipads, iphones) that used to be able to connect are doing the same thing. i turned off secure connections and all my devices (except the PS5) connect normally again. i am not understanding why the secure connection is messing up the server. im getting to the point where i just won’t use the PS5 for Plex.

Didn’t work for me. All it did was make Plex not work on anything else.

I running a opnsense Firewall an i found the resolution for me on this site:

PFSENSE DNS RESOLVER

Similarly, if you are using pfSense’s internal DNS resolver service, you’ll want to adjust that configuration. In the pfSense web UI, go to Services > DNS Resolver, click Display Custom Options, and enter the following the the text box:

server:
private-domain: "plex.direct"

This was the trick to get the Plex App on PS5 working

Hope you can fix the Problems with your Router

I finally got the PS5 app to work, but it will only Direct Stream. It won’t Direct Play. I’m only using it on my local server so Direct Play should work, right? :woman_shrugging:

Found the network guy ;o)

orz how did i miss the dns rebind. That fixed it indeed.

I think the main problem here is that ok it’s working remotly if you link your plex server but if your internet connection is not efficient enough then it’s impossible to read a 4K movie for intence because it has to go through internet before coming back to your ps5… please plex can you update the app soon with a fix

Another PS5 user here - running latest version of both server and app on PC, IOS, PS4 and PS5. Setting the PS5 app to always secure sorts out the connection issue and as I have my own cert it makes perfect sense. All other platforms work with both insecure and secure.

As security is a growing concern it makes perfect sense for Plex to develop this even more …maybe an easy implementation of Let’s Encrypt or similar would be great for those that do not already have a certificate.

Next issue I have is that when playing an episode from series or a movie from the internal catalogue the Plex App on PS5 dos not register them as played. Also skipping intro or just skipping 30 seconds often result in a stall with the buffering icon spinning forever so communication is till bad even with the secure settings.

It’s now working for me, I just did two simple things :

  1. Set my security preference to “always is use secure connection” on my Plex server
  2. Change the DNS server of my PS5 (and all devices with which I want to use Plex) (I used Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1)

That’s it, it’s now working for me. (Note that I also have the remote access configured, I don’t know if this is required).

So i dont know what changed…there was no update to the Plex app but there was a new firmware update to the PS5. i simply set Secure Connections to Preferred on my Plex server and then it just started to magically work on my PS5. the last time i did this, all my devices were not able to connect anymore…well they did but the home screen would just hang and nothing would load. i didnt even change the DNS server on the PS5. so thanks, i guess?

Soooo, make the fields for manual servers take strings? What exactly is the difficulty here?

Don’t just remove the manual servers feature because you think people are too dumb to setup a valid certificate please. Jesus.

EDIT: And yes I’m sure you’d have to modify things so it only makes connections using SSL and maybe have to write a little Text note saying “This doesn’t work with HTTP, it requires a server with a valid SSL certificate, read our faq on Plex to learn more”.
If you remove the feature entirely it’s likely never coming back and it’ll lead to the end of many of us using plex.

So I posted earlier with the issue and have just seen the updates, I followed the steps and finally it started working (yay), however the buffering (esp. on 4k titles) is horrendous and most audio types are not working (glitchy) - almost unplayable (boo).
However if I change to the TV network with Plex via DLNA the movie and audio plays fine - which tells me it’s not the network or my (admittedly) aging PC and HDD set-up.
I hope a big update is incoming or else there’s little point me using Plex on the PS5 anymore, and I don’t want to use it as via DLNA as the UI is basic and you can’t resume when returning days later.

They need to fix it. End of. I have tried every single configuration and nothing I do works. Every other decixe works perfectly. The issue is with the ps5 plex app or ps5 config.

I had the same issue on ps4. Starting plex results in hang up application. Here is how i solved it:

  • pushing the ps4 button repetitively will allow you to move the cursor eventually down to “settings”. You need to try a few times; pretend to close the plex app and go back to the frozen plex menu and try to downwards in menu
  • select “reset app” at the bottom
  • follow the screen guidelines, log on again on another device
  • done! Works as designed.

Hope this helps for you as well

The preferred connections solution does work but when watching titles they are not marked as played and the position of the video is not there if you stop part ways if accessing the same title on the browser or another Plex app.

I had this issue before when using preferred connections on the PS4. For whatever reason it is causing the server to not recognize titles that are played on the PS5 and I have to manually mark as played for each one. Annoying if you have a show that has 100 episodes…

I totally understand the frustration but this isn’t a use case we want to spend time on right now, when there are many other things we can, and need to, improve in the PS5 app.

This is a known issue and we’re investigating!
