Roku New Experience Release Update

Hi everyone! First - thank you for your feedback. I, and others all around Plex, have spent the last twenty-four+ hours reading through messages both here, on Reddit, and in other locations. We are still evaluating this broad response, but wanted to get an update out.

Let’s get the big question out of the way - at this time we aren’t planning on rolling back this update. While there are many reports of people not having the greatest initial experience, we do have quite a few updates and things that are actively being addressed as I write this message. So please keep reading.

There was some funkiness to this release that we are still trying to understand. We see a lot of reports of buttons not responding and navigation not seeming to work that are followed up with a message of things working as intended after a restart. This is not normal behavior that we have observed with other releases nor did we see this in the beta and internal testing. Therefore, we do recommend that anyone seeing any issues start with a basic restart of the app. This can be done in one of a number of ways:

  • You can restart your Plex app. From the main Roku screen hit the ‘ * ’ button on your remote and select the Restart App option as shown below. Note - this option will only show up once the app has been started, so if the option is missing you would need to start the Plex app on your device first

  • You can initiate a restart of the Roku. To do this, from the main Roku screen (not your Plex app) go to Settings → System → Power → System Restart → Restart (note- this is the pathing for Roku OS version 14, if you are on a different OS version YMMV)
  • You could also power cycle the Roku. Simply unplugging and plugging the power cord back in will cycle the device and the app

Bugs We’re Working On

As far as other issues, here is a list of other items that we are working on

  • Season Card navigation issues - This is a bug that can really mess up your navigation (and may result in downstream issues like the buttons not responding during playback). When viewing a season for a TV show there is a new card at the beginning/left side of the hub showing season information.. Selecting this card starts playback from the next unwatched episode in that season, but also has a bug in that it makes your navigation and button presses basically freak out. The only way to reset this state is to exit and restart your app. You can avoid this by not selecting the first Season card in a show hub, and if you do get into this state you can reset your app using the instructions above. Additionally, selecting a season card from a hub like Recently Added shows can also exhibit this behavior. We are treating this as an urgent issue and are pushing to get a release out ASAP to address (edit: this release is created and we are working to get it out ASAP).

  • Help! I have a blank homescreen! - we promote hubs from favorite libraries to the homescreen. If you turn off other sources (like Discover and On Demand) and don’t have any favorite libraries, the homescreen can appear completely empty. The easiest way to address this is to select some favorite libraries. We are also working on updating the messaging if this state is to occur to help people understand that the way to show content on the home screen is to select your favorite libraries.

Feedback we’re considering around some stuff that wasn’t obvious

There is some feedback that features have been removed and we are still reading through all of the comments regarding the new experience. There are some callouts to make here:

  • Scanning a library - this option was not removed, it still exists. To access, when you are on the library name in the library picker, hit the ‘ * ‘ button on your remote and a right menu will show with the ‘ Scan ‘ option. Additionally, based on this feedback we are re-evaluating how we can make this option more visible.

  • Library Ordering - This is absolutely possible in the new experience. When you have a library selected, simply hit the ‘ * ‘ button on your remote and you will see an option to reorder that favorite library. This is another area that we are committed to bringing more visibility and access and have a team working on updating the design so that we can get this out in a future update.

  • Playlists - Playlists still exist! We saw a few reports that suggested that these had been removed. They were moved a bit (but not re-moved). These are now located in the library navigation, on the left side of the screen.

Additional Comments / Future Considerations / Open to Feedback

Finally there are a few miscellaneous areas to cover:

  • Library Favorites - Early on, when planning this experience, we wanted to provide a more consistent experience across all apps. One way to do this was an idea to synchronize favorite libraries across all apps with the new experience and store those favorites at the account level. This has benefits - you now only need to set favorites once and then those favorite libraries will be brought in automatically when logging into a new device. However, this also has drawbacks since it prevents different setups between different devices. There has been feedback on this new approach and we are evaluating whether this is the right path to be on and how we can communicate this change in behavior better. We welcome comments here.

  • Why are you pushing your Plex stuff on me?!? - Similar to the funkiness around navigation that I mentioned above, we saw some reports from people who had turned off some of our Plex sources (like Discover or On Demand) but they were showing in the new experience. We have investigated these reports and it looks like a weird caching issue could occur where a fallback would erroneously show these sources again. Your settings are being honored and we are not turning these things back on for people that have opted to turn them off. This one should be cleared now, but please let us know if you see it occur again. Additionally, our next release has some changes that prevent this scenario from happening in the future.

  • Playback and other issues - we are actively listening and working to address known bugs. The player stack was not changed for the new experience. Therefore, if you are experiencing any ongoing playback issues or other bugs we would like to hear about them. We have seen a few reports of Pausing, Fast-Forwarding, and Rewinding not working for a few users. We ask that you try restarting your device first, but if the issues persist please help us help you here and try and provide as much information about the event that you can including the version of your Plex app, the OS version of the Roku device, what you were trying to playback, and any other information that might help us understand and fix the issue.

For the updates mentioned here in this thread, we are pushing hard to get an update out. If you are part of our preview channel we just posted a new release with fixes for the bugs mentioned in this thread. We have also started the release process to get this out to all of you as quickly as possible. You can see the release notes for the preview channel here. Thank you again for your feedback and attention here. :plexheart:

Most of this stuff should have been documented and emailed to users BEFORE the release was pushed out! Where is the documentation?!

Please offer an option to use the old UI.

Something interesting to note in my experience. After reading the comment about the blank home screen (which I had not experienced yet) I went through and disabled all of the Discovery recomendation stuff on my primary account. After restarting the app my home page finally shows my Recently Added for different libraries and “start watching” again. Before this it ONLY showed the Continue Watching, and then the discovery and outside app streaming junk.

It NEEDS an option to revert to the “Classic” experience. As the navigation of the current experience is not intuitive and the previous experience was. Or, better yet, ROLL IT BACK!

Ever since the new rollout, I haven’t been able to access my media on any Roku device. However, the web and PlexAmp work perfectly fine. I’ve tried resetting the app on Roku, removing authorizations on the server, and reinstalling the app on the Roku devices. The server is up-to-date and functioning. What can I do to fix this?

I have reported this numerous times: I CAN NOT favorite libraries. The option does not stick.

There are far more deficiencies than those listed and noted in 100’s of posts. For example, recorded shows cannot be forwarded or reversed. Also, shows marked by Plex has previously watched you cannot click on play and watch the show. REMOVE THE BLOCKING OF WATCHED Shows. You can’t navigate around this. There are occasions where I started watching a show and I come back and I click watch and it does nothing. After 15 minutes of frustrating time I clicked on home and if you click continue watching then it will play.

You need to read these posts as there are FAR more defects where we cannot watch any recorded content.

Thank you for coming forward, however, you SERIOUSLY FAILED by not acknowledging within 4 hours of 100’s of posts that you are “monitoring posts to understand the problems and the team is working to assemble the defects. Keep posting your observations so we can address the issues.” THIS IS THE REPONSE YOU SHOUD HAVE PROVIDED - YET - YOU WERE SILENT. Take this as feedback to always and immediately address ‘You are …..

Sounds like we’re stuck with this. May I suggest..

First as pictured showing Playlists, please allow us to reorder that left navigation bar so that Browse can be at the top and thus the default. Right now it forces Recommendations (first recommend for us was a movies we had watched) and if one deselects all recommend option for a library in server settings, when the library is selected one gets a screen saying the library is empty (it is not)

This would at least eliminate user confusion and make navigation a bit more intuitive (if possible)

To the Plex employee: First, thank you for at least showing the decency to address this situation and provide an explanation. However, I urge you to examine the images I posted—do they resemble what you described? If rolling back the new UI is entirely off the table, then at the very least ensure that your product functions properly for those of us unable to access the operational server.

@McWanke It is absolutely unfathomable that Plex is still unwilling to admit defeat with this entire new experience. You are all really hanging onto the sunk cost fallacy huh? This entire effort should have been completely abandoned and taken back to the drawing board months ago. You can clearly see just how much almost none of your users like this entire rebuild yet insist on pushing forward. And at what cost? All that is going to come of this is a completely shattered user base. You have lost the most valuable asset from your customers, trust. Do better.

I AGREE, the new format is not user friendly and is not easy to find my libraries or my friends. They are all mixed around in the menu. Its really confusing for more elderly people like my parents in their 70s to figure out how to navigate and you have to jump through to many hoops to find what you are looking for. The old format was way more User friendly, You are going to loose a lot of people to platforms like EMBY and JELLYFIN if you do not. I and all my friends maybe some of them

Good news! We have created a setting so that you can set the default view for libraries. In settings check out Experience → Default Library View

Also thanks for the callout when a server owner has turned off all hubs. I have created a ticket to adjust that zero state messaging to something better that doesn’t look like the library is empty.

See the original post comment:

Yes, we found this. Still less useful than previous functionality, remembering tabs.

Why oh why would ANYONE think it was a good idea to remove the user friendly home screen side navigation bar which required ONLY ONE click to access. The reasoning for this change is incomprehensible. Do you not understand the term user friendly? I’m seriously considering switching to Jellyfin but the time to customize my entire library isn’t appealing. This update is really making the argument for the time commitment. I have already installed Jellyfin, and started with the library setup.

Sure, I understand not rolling back.

So offer the old design as an option, in settings, stop development on it and just let the users that can find that setting turn it on, and then ignore us local media users like you usually do.

@McWanke Trying to be constructive and I’ll be brief. I don’t see any response related to top navigation, if I missed it in your post then I apologise.

The removal of the left side navigation to get to your media content IMO is a bad design choice. Getting to media is the number one thing folks want and are used to but moving it up onto the top bar (and the bottom on mobile) is bad. Its not natural, we move left to right, especially on a TV app. Many of us have been saying this since day one and its ignored again here.

I can imagine as a company you want your profile stuff to be front and centre which is what you have on the left in this new design. However media needs to be the focus not social profiles.

Restoring this and moving the profile stuff back over to the right would help a long way with the flow.

@McWanke

It’s honestly impressive how consistently you manage to demonstrate that Plex isn’t actually listening to its users at all. This post reads less like a genuine response and more like theater, a “look, we hear you!” performance, while the elephant in the room tramples everything. That elephant being: people don’t want this “new experience”.

The new design is outright terrible from a user perspective: cluttered, unintuitive, and frustrating to navigate. It undermines the very purpose of Plex and makes everyday use actively worse.

We’re not talking about a couple of quirky bugs or where to find hidden menus under a “press * on the remote” trick. We’re talking about a fundamental rejection of the entire redesign. The users has been saying this loud and clear, yet you continue to treat valid criticism as just a list of small glitches to patch. It’s completely tone-deaf and outright dismissive.

Listening means acting, not just collecting words you have no intention of acting on. By ignoring the overwhelming rejection of this update, you’re not just dismissing feedback, you’re betraying your users. That betrayal won’t be forgotten, in the end it will cost you more than admitting a mistake. Right now, Plex isn’t showing respect, it’s showing arrogance, and that always has a price.
