TV: Samsung Q95T / Tizen 5.5
Example movie has an aspect ratio of 2.35 and is in the .MKV format. Also tried with .MP4 and other aspect ratios with the same problem.
Hi, it seems like the Plex app from the App Store is removing the black bars on every piece of content I’m playing on my Samsung TV. Instead, it stretches the picture up and down to make a ‘full screen’ image which results in a bad picture, where everyone is stretched.
I’ve tried disabling Direct Play and Direct Stream but with no success. I’ve also tried changing my TV’s behaviour of zooming and using different aspect ratios but with no success either.
I can’t reproduce the problem in any other app which makes me believe it’s a Plex issue. I also can’t reproduce the problem on another device, so I’m quite convinced it’s a Tizen issue.
The Plex app does not remove the black bars if they are embedded in the video. Plex looks at the overall size of the video file and will show all of it. If your videos look weird, it’s likely the file was encoded weirdly and using a fake aspect ratio to fix it. Plex does not follow these and displays videos as they were encoded.
Please provide the XML from Plex for one of these videos and a screen shot so we can see what’s going on.
Just found this post after experiencing the same issue on my brand new Q80T Tizen 5.5 Plex 4.19.? (Latest). Doesn’t happen on all videos.
But I can confirm from the info bar in the plex the source video resolution is 1920x818 and on the Q80T it plays Stretched full 1920x1080 as the OP says no black bars. Incorrect aspect ratio.
I have another 2019 Samsung tv here that’s Tizen 5.0 Plex 4.29.x and same plex server video and it plays fine.
Let me know if you need more info.
To be honest the Tizen 5 Plex app kinda seems snappier to load and get around in too… both TVs are wired Ethernet.
If it works fine with 4.29 but not on 4.19, I would suggest trying to update to 4.29 on that TV too. If you can get to 4.29.6, you can also try out the new preview app, New Samsung Tizen App Preview.
Thanks - How do I get to that version? I’ve uninstalled and re-installed and that is the only version available. Do I need Enable Early Access to get 4.29?
Samsung controls updates but 4.29 should be available, if not, then either they haven’t released it on that specific TV or the TV’s app store isn’t updating to show the new version. Either way, they’s nothing you can do but wait for it to become available.
You need 4.29 to enable the preview. The preview is actually 5.x.
Hi, I am having the same issue on both preview 5.0.11 and stable 4.29.7 running on tizen 5.5.
It occurs when direct streaming the file. Also the video is stuttering same as it was reported here New Samsung Tizen App Preview
I’m getting the same issue - Samsung Q70T TV, Plex app version 4.29.7, Tizen 5.5. If the video is in a widescreen aspect ratio (not 16:9), the Plex app stretches the video into a 16:9 aspect ratio instead of adding black bars.
It doesn’t happen for all videos - I’ve been trying to do some investigation and found it seems to happen for me only when the video is being transcoded by the Plex server. If the video is direct played, it’s displayed normally and Plex adds the black bars to maintain the correct aspect ratio.
I only recently purchased this Q70T TV and this issue has happened from the start - this didn’t happen on my previous Samsung TV (5-6 years old) - not sure of the model, Plex/OS version since I don’t have the TV any more. It doesn’t happen when playing the video in a browser/mobile app so it must be some issue in the Plex app on the TV itself.
Happy to provide any additional info required to solve this issue - this is making the Plex service basically useless to me until a fix/workaround is found.
Edit: I should have added - I have also tried the early access preview. It does the same thing with version 5.1.1 of the Plex app.
Could it be some issue on the server, incorrectly transcoding for this model of TV in particular?
