Splitting similar TV series in my library

For a specific example:

I have an Anime by the name of El hazard in a Anime only TV show library… there are 4 consecutive series and are grouped together in one directory called elhazard but split in to their own sub directories, but they are all being mashed together by plex as only one of the 4 series with “duplicates” of episodes. Is there a way to split them by directory or something? i remember something like this used to be a feature but i cant seem to find it again.

well i separated them all into individual directories in the anime folder, but 2 of them still don’t show at all now, up even though they exist in the tvdb. i have tried multiple variations of the file and folder structures and nothing works… not that the file name and folder structure was ever a problem before

Please show the exact file names and the folder structure you are using.

Are you familiar with
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220687-naming-series-season-based-tv-shows/
and are you adhering closely to these guidelines?

i have tried changing the file name structure… but there isnt an issue with the other 2 series of the same show that dont follow the naming structure either

That is a common misunderstanding. If a wrong file naming works with some shows, that doesn’t mean it will always work with all shows.
Only adhering to the official, supported naming will work - particularly as you add more and more to your library.

well as i said i did try to change it to the plex officially supported structure

El Hazard - The Magical World - S01E01 was the best i could do

El Hazard - The Magical World = the name of the series

s01e01 = season and episode (which technically is incorrect. its only one season but they made a sequel series separately.

i don’t know what the episode itself is titled or i would have added it to the end.

That one is not listed at TheTVDB. Probably because it is fan fiction and was never ‘aired’ officially.
https://www.thetvdb.com/search?q=el+hazard&l=en

Did you organise these files into a proper folder structure, as required yb the naming guide?

Its not a fan fiction. Its an OVA.

“OVA’s are episodes produced exclusively for video release, though they usually air on television a few months later. Most anime shows are released for television first (in Japan) and then released on DVD later, but OVA’s are the reverse.”

I have other OVA’s in my list that have shown up… anyway i don’t think this is Plex’s fault for it not showing up. I managed to make it show up for a few seconds but then it tried to find a match for it online, it disappeared again. which still doesn’t make sense cause i have had other anime appear in the library that didn’t have any online meta data.

and yes i’ll say again i did try to use the file and folder structure.

If it’s an OVA, it will usually be in the season 00.
However, I did not find ‘the magical world’ in any of the 3 listed shows on TheTVDB.

What is your current folder structure? Without knowing that, I cannot give you a recommendation on how to proceed.

/storage/manga/anime/el hazard/el hazard - the magical world/el hazard - the magical world - s01e01.

i have seen reports that the western word calls them the magnificent world but that doesn’t show up in tvdb either.

It’s right there
https://www.thetvdb.com/series/el-hazard-die-phantastische-welt

This is the issue: You are collecting them under a common folder
/storage/manga/anime/el hazard/
This doesn’t work.
If they are separate shows on TheTVDB, then they must be in separate folders on media storage.

Your anime library must point to the folder /storage/manga/anime
Not one folder level above, nor one level below that.

Don’t replace the : in the show’s title by another character. Simply leave it out.

This is how it’s supposed to be:
/storage/manga/anime/el hazard the magnificent world/season 01/el hazard the magical world - s01e01

/storage/manga/anime/el hazard the alternative world/season 01/el hazard the alternative world - s01e01

/storage/manga/anime/el hazard the wanderers/season 01/el hazard the wanderers - s01e01

It’s right there
https://www.thetvdb.com/series/el-hazard-die-phantastische-welt

weird… it didn’t show up when i searched for it. but then it also did once

/storage is the communal folder for my extra drives on my linux box.
/storage/manga is the drive that has all my cartoons.
/storage/manga/anime is the location of my anime library

i will try it again with your suggestion of a space instead of a :

no it still wont work… it appears to be getting combined with alternative world

Do this:
Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards, perform the Plex Dance with each of these series individually.

so i have done as you said…

and they all show up until the scan is completed and then get matched and then they get combined again. but now its giving me the option to split them… so at least there is that

i finally got it.

This show is a mess on TheTVDB.
Apparently, the season 1 of The Magnificent World
https://www.thetvdb.com/series/el-hazard-die-phantastische-welt/seasons/1

appears also as specials under The Alternative World
https://www.thetvdb.com/series/el-hazard-the-alternative-world/seasons/0

well that would explain what was going on.

the way it goes is:
magnificent world 1 came first
mw2 came next as a mini series,
alternative world comes 3rd and

the wanderer is a rehash of it all that’s been simplified

but they are all technically separate shows
