Synology - DSM 7.0 Release - Plex Installation (Not Operational) Issues

Good evening,
That was the problem, thank you very much for your time!
I thought it would be more difficult than that as I had never had any problems with previous updates.
Have a nice evening!

Hey! Got the same issue with the newest Update but your directions doesn’t work for me.

This package is not supported on Synology NAS platform or is not compatible with the current DSM version. (Translated from German)

Should i wait for another Update for the newest DSM (i got 7.2.2-72806) or do you have another suggestion what i could do? Thanks!

@Marslmoto

If you just updated from 7.2.1 (or lower) to 7.2.2 DSM,

you need to head back to the Downloads page.

Under the DSM7 dropdown , you’ll see DSM 7.2+

Download from that selector for your machine.

( Synology changed how menus work and we needed to adapt)

If you’re upgrading PMS too, it’ll just update.
If not, Uninstall + KEEP and install Normal.

Hello,

I’ve just updated from DSM 6.2 to DSM 7.1.1 and have run into no end of issues trying to migrate my plex server.

I uninstalled PMS on DSM 6.2 before updating first to DSM7, and then to DSM 7.1.1.

I then installed PMS using the package centre, and gave permissions for plex to read/write the various folders. I had previous libraries in homes/plex/films etc.

However, the migration process never happened, plex never gave me the option to point it at the old library, so I read I may need to uninstall PMS and install again, but now I can’t manage PMS at all using package centre. It seems broken (see screenshot).

Plex is working to a degree, it let me set it up and create a new library etc, and if I put something in that it sees it (though remote access is still playing up), but it’s not great.

Any advice on how to fix or am I better off starting again?

Thanks in advance.

@jamesm182

At this point, take the unit up to DSM 7.2.2
It will be easier to get this resolved (do the migration) with a working DSM GUI

Thank you very much!

@Marslmoto

All working now ?

It doesn’t seem to give me the option for 7.2.2 unfortunately - it says I’m up to date!

Edit - just downloading manually - will keep you posted.

@jamesm182

Go to the Synology Download Site.

You can manually download DSM 7.2.2 for most of the units.

My DS418j was updated that way

Thanks, yep just realised this. Should I go up to the “update 2” version?

Yes! It works :slight_smile:

For the future - how or where do I see when I can install an update for my NAS or Plex Server without it crashing everything?

@Marslmoto

Plex/web will tell you when there’s an update.

Package Center won’t tell you anything. We’re working with them to get it to automatically updating in sync with our releases but no joy yet.

As for not crashing ??? Turn it off and let it collect dust ? :rofl: LOL
Syno and PMS on syno are very stable. ( only the support engineers are unstable - lol )

Okay okay :rofl: So this is my life now - i think its okay. I’m gettin used to it :smiley:

OK - I’m up to 7.2.2 and have access to PMS in package centre. I’m still having difficulty getting it to migrate my old library though - any suggestions? Thanks

@jamesm182

The process of cleaning up from a failed migration is easy.

Please first confirm for me – In the “Plex” shared folder ( ignoring PlexMediaServer shared folder ), You still have “Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server”

Yes I do.

However, I would add (if it makes any difference) my actually library was under homes/plex previously and is also still there.

Having your media under Homes ---- I’d recommend moving them to dedicated shared folders for safety but, for now, we’ll get you running again.

First things to do:

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 plex package with the ERASE option.
    – This erases the PlexMediaServer shared folder (which is a rogue server instance at this point)

  2. Now, using this How-To, Grant FULL CONTROL file permissions to the new PlexMediaServer username (old Plex has been abandoned in DSM 7). MAKE CERTAIN TO CLICK THE Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files box as you do this else migration will have problems.

  1. The final step is to install DSM 7 package. It will automatically find and migrate for you from DSM 6 → DSM 7.
    – It will sit at “Installing” (BE PATIENT – Do NOT refresh the screen)
    – In a second tab, open FileStation and look in the “Plex” shared folder.
    – After about the 3 minute mark, you’ll see “Migration.log”. You can track its progress there.

Let me know when you’re done or have questions.

Just to confirm am I going for the “erase all” option and that won’t delete my media library?

Yes.

The “Erase All” option does two things: (1) uninstalls the Plex Media Server application; (2) deletes all files in the PlexMediaServer shared folder. This removes the rogue server Chuck references in #1.

Your media files are not touched.

The files in the Plex shared folder are not touched (they will be migrated when you reinstall Plex Media Server in #3 in Chuck’s post).

Hello,

I went through your steps but unfortunately it didn’t seem to work.

I erased the installation using erase all with no issues. I then granted “full control” to the plexmediaserver username for the plexmediaserver shared folder.

When I ran the new install from package centre the installation did not take very long and I can’t find the migration log. No migration appeared to happen.

When I open plex from package centre it asks for set up as if it’s a new server, e.g. add library etc.
