Synology - DSM 7.0 Release - Plex Installation (Not Operational) Issues

  1. Do you still have Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server in the Plex shared folder ?

  2. If you do, then you did not do both required pieces
    – Grant FULL CONTROL to System Internal User PlexMediaServer
    AND
    – Apply to this folder sub-folders and files.

This is how you can do it in FileStation.

Observe:

  1. Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files
  2. In the next popup, PlexMediaServer has all permission options checked.

After applying these permissions,

  1. Uninstall DSM 7 Plex
  2. Delete the PlexMediaServer shared folder
  3. Reinstall the package

Give user plexmediaserver full control of the plex shared folder.

That is Step 4 in FAQ 27: Migrating from DSM 6 to DSM 7.

  1. Change the shared folder permissions using
    a. Open Control Panel
    b. Shared Folders
    c. EDIT the Plex share
    d. Permissions tab
    e. Click Customize
    f. Check all Administration
    g. Check all Read
    h. Check all Write
    i. Click Done
    j. Check ‘Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files’.
    j. Click Save (Applies shared folder permission changes)
    k. – Now wait until all changes are applied
    l. Click Save again to return to the Shared Folders app.

Thanks - that was definitely part of the issue. It did the migration this time.

I now have my watch history back etc, but no content?

Edit - may have sorted it hang on…

OK I can see the content but it say playback error, please check permissions for this file.

User plexmediaserver needs at least read only permissions to your media files. If you use DVR service or create optimized versions, then it needs read-write access.

Repeat the Step 4 steps for the folders holding your media. Give user plexmediaserver read only or read-write access. Do not give Full Access (it is not needed).

Be sure to check ‘Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files’.

At the bottom of the Syno FAQ, you will find extra tips for dealing with DSM 7

Thanks both. Really appreciate both your help.

Managed to get it working again now. The only nitpick I have now is that remote access is saying it’s disabled BUT it is working via 5G on my phone so I think it is working?

However, it keeps wanting to transcode to SD despite me changing the setting etc. Any ideas on that one? Thanks

Hi there.
After the latest update (1.41.3.9314) on my DSM 7.1 (upgrade to 7.2.x not supported by Synology) I am stuck with that DSM GUI error.
Is there a version explicitly still working with DSM 7.1?
Can I downgrade without too much hassle?
Will there be working updates for DSM 7.1 or am I doomed to buy a newer device?
Regards
Nerillka

The problem is DSM 7.1.1 Update 7, not Plex. It affects other applications, in addition to Plex. There is no version of Plex Media Server unaffected by the problem.

Synology said they will fix the problem by the end of February.

In the meantime, see FAQ 35: Start/Stop Plex using Task Scheduler.

About a week ago, Plex said I needed to update and it went from working before the update to not working and not able to see the server after the update.

For the past few days, I have…

Installed Beta
latest for DSM 7.2.2 (v.1.41.4.9463-630c9f557)
Latest for DSM 7 (v.1.41.4.9463-630c9f557)
latest verified by Synology (1.40.4.8840-72008840)

All with the same results.

DSM is up to date (7.2.2-72806)

My router (Asus GT-BE98 Pro) should not come into play as it was not changed after the update - no VPNs were added, no ports were forwarded.

I changed the DNS from Cloudfare, to Quad9, to Google - none made any difference.

I cannot connect to http://192.XXX.X.XXX:32400/web or https://192.XXX.X.XXX:32400/web
I have removed the server. Repeatedly.
I have claimed the server. Repeatedly.

Regardless of what I do, it says that my server is unavailable, and has a orange check and a red caution sign - if the server even shows at all. It does now show at all as of this writing.
Right now, after an uninstall/reinstall of Plex on my NAS, it hangs in a browser until I finally get “ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT”.

I looked through the forums but nearly everything (except how to d/l a log file) referenced a “Network” section of a “Server” that does not show for me. I am frustrated and at a complete loss as what to do next. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’m trying to avoid the week of crawling the data back into Plex if I can - if that’s the only option, i just need someone smarter than me to say so.

Thank you.

Version hopping usually causes more problems than it helps. Also, as your NAS is running DSM 7.2.2, do not try to install the DSM 7 version of PMS (it should fail to install).

Please do the following:

  1. Set the NAS DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google).
  2. Sync the NAS with a public NTP server: Control Panel → Regional Options → Time tab.
You will see Status: Normal if properly synchronized.
  3. Restart the NAS.
  4. Follow Synology FAQ 31: Reset / Reclaim PMS on DSM 7 (Not Authorized - Locked Out).

If it goes well, you will see “PlexMediaServer claimed by username”, and you should be able to access the server.

If you are unable to generate the claim code or you see a message that Plex Media Server cannot communicate with plex.tv, then there is a network problem preventing communication. Verify the network settings (IP address & mask, default gateway) and try again.

If it still does not work, (1) Stop Plex Media Server; (2) Using File Manager, navigate to the Plex Data Folder; (3) Right click on the Logs directory and choose Compress to Logs.zip; and (4) download the zip file and post to the thread.

Thanks for the quick response and help. I followed all directions, but with the same result. I have attached my logs.
Logs.zip (2.6 MB)
file.

Check your Syno’s internet connections (Control Panel - Network - each adapter)

Something is wrong / misconfigured / disconnected (loose / broken cable?)

It’s declaring the network as ‘unreachable’.

Thanks. Is PPPoE required for Plex? I have Xfinity/Comcast cable and not DSL (which is what I understand PPPoE is for).

As a last resort, I turned off the NAS’ firewall and Plex got through.
Went back and allowed “32400” through the NAS’ firewall and all is well.

I have no idea how that rule got unchecked through installs/reinstalls, but that was the culprit.

Thanks again for the time, insight, and patience.

PPPoE is normally only used when you have DSL and connect the Telco ISP incoming connection directly to the NAS.

I’ve not used PPPoE in 7-8 years
