Synology DSM 7.2.2

I for one, certainly hope so, but then we don’t know what Synology have up their sleeve, so it could be a repeat of the DSM6 → DSM7 upgrade, which was a bit of a disaster as you know.

But, thanks to you and your due diligence, we all got through it without too many scratches … lol

And, thanks for retaining things as they are for this minor upgrade, that helps everyone a lot.

I was unaware of the Plex incompatibility with 7.2.2.

So I started with DSM upgrade, then got the warning that the Plex package is incompatible with DSM, then googled the issue, found this thread, downloaded Plex 1.41.0.8994 and installed it. Runs fine, thankfully.

So it also works if the order is Upgrade - Uninstall - Install.

ALL:

To help spread the knowledge, I’ve put together the DSM 7.2.2 upgrade article for the Syno FAQ

The link is here.
Upgrading Plex to DSM 7.2.2+

The procedure is very simple.

In summary, no version of Plex will run on my DS920+ running DSM 7.2.2. Here’s my installation and troubleshooting steps.

  1. Installed DSM 7.2.2-72806 on my DS920+, Plex stops working as expected.
  2. Download from Plex and manually install PlexMediaServer-1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a-x86_64_DSM72, package shows Manually stopped. When I select Run, it starts, then automatically stops after a few seconds.
  3. I removed Plex, rebooted Synology, re-installed Plex 1.41.1.9057, same indications.
  4. Installed PlexMediaServer-1.41.0.8911-1bd569c5f-x86_64_DSM72 to go to older version, Plex did not work as expected, reinstalled 1.41.1.9057, same indications.
  5. Removed Plex, installed Plex package 1.40.4.8840-72008840 from Synology Package Center, then installed 1.41.1.9057, same indications.
  6. Re-downloaded latest Plex PlexMediaServer-1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a-x86_64_DSM72 and installed on off chance the file was corrupted, no change in indications.
  7. Verified permissions are all correct.
  8. After reding this and several other forums I now know what I SHOULD have done, hoping someone know what I CAN do now.

Cheers!

Need a manually captured ZIP file of the “Logs” directory under PlexMediaServer with PMS stopped.

FileStation → PlexMediaServer → … Plex Media Server →
Right-click ‘Logs’ → Compress to logs.zip

I see PMS hasn’t run since yesterday.

I see this in your logs.

Have you corrected this?

PMS won’t run without a working network & DNS & Gateway IP

Those times are when the ISP went down from the hurricane. The server has been working normal since power and the ISP were restored with exception of the Plex package. I can log into Plex.tv separately from Synology but the PMS just will not stay running.

@barrov

Did your Syno shutdown abruptly with the weather ?

What I’m seeing in your logs is a complete failure to write to them.

With no activity since Nov 10th, there is something blocking it.

I’m suspecting the file permissions for the PlexMediaServer shared folder were damaged -OR- Preferences.xml itself was damaged.

Can you look at Preferences.xml ? See if it’s file size zero bytes ?

@chuckpa, Yes, UPS did not last as long as planned and abruptly shutdown. preferences.xml file was 0 bytes. Replaced the file with one containing:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Plex runs again. Thanks!

Might want to work that upgrade into your planning

–and–

Have a USB cable connected to the Syno from the UPS so it knows to shutdown

So the FAQ and the process worked fine for plex to uninstall, update DSM and reinstall plex with PlexMediaServer-1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a-x86_64_DSM72.spk

It looks like now Syno has a 7.22 Update 1, do I need to do the same here again?

We are not aware of any internal changes with DSM 7.2.2-1

The package change (internals) was in 7.2.2 itself.

BTW - Seemed fine with no additional action needed

Thank you! Finally got around to doing today with 7.2.2 Update 1. Followed the steps outlined in this thread / the FAQ (Uninstall Plex/Keep, Upgrade DSM, Manually download PMS latest, Install PMS) and all worked seamlessly.
And of course big thanks to @ChuckPa as always for all you do, saving us from ourselves!

Quick question please. After I go to do the manual install of PLEX for 7.2.2 will I have to reset all of the PLEX rights to the Synology folders and file or will that get carried over from the retained settings?

No, you will not.

Great!!! Thank you

Anyone yet do synology update 722 - Update 2?

Update 1 was fine but feel like I need to consult first or should we consider these non issues at this point

I updated to DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 2 on a DS423+ with Plex Version 1.41.2.9200. No issues specific to this update 2 that I’ve notice. Playback on mobile devices and TV with a Shield Pro, and another with an Apple TV are as normal. Doesn’t appear to be any issues at the moment.

I have issues with live TV accurately and consistently identifying and automatically skipping commercials on Antenna Live TV, but that seems to have occurred after I updated from Plex Version 1.40.4.8840 to the latest version of 1.41.2.9200 (same hardware and NAS OS as above). This issue occurs on all my playback devices.

Also, there is issue with the Nvidia Shield Pro and my setup but unrelated to the Update 2, and that’s the audio cuts in an out at intervals of around 5 - 10 seconds upon turning on the TV on each and ever session. The solution is to manually reboot The Nvidia Shield Pro. No audio issues occur after a fresh reboot during the same session. When it goes to sleep or I turn it off for a little while, every time I come back the audio issue occurs. I reboot every single new session (new time watching TV). A little annoying, but the reboot solution works. None of my other devices have this issue, and I returned two other Nvidia Shield Pro units that all had the same issue.

Thank you @chuckpa . DSM 7.2.2 upgrade with plex functioning in under 30 min with your instructions. I am very grateful for the time you took to do this!
