Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

Running Synology DS218+, ran PMS for about a year with no issue. About a week ago, I could no longer see my server in the plex app on some devices. Pretty much have blown away everything and am just trying to set up new instance of plex server with the same media. So, over the last week, I upgraded Synology to the latest DSM (DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 1). I completely removed the old Plex folder and user. I’ve installed PMS 1.29.0.6244 after removing any old versions (with Erase checked). Install goes Ok if in “Normal” mode, but if I try to install with a claim token value the install fails. If installed normally, the install works, but server is marked as unclaimed. When I attempt to claim it, it just spins for about 30 seconds and then gives up. I tried changing DNS (default, 8.8.8.8, same used on my laptop on same network). I tried a new private window. I’m connected via ssh as well if that helps. attaching logs.
Plex Media Server(1).log (186.5 KB)

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

@hokiesteve02

Very simple to fix this.

Tried this, but after entering the claim code and proceeding, I got the following message after a few minutes:
Failed to install the package.
ERROR: could not complete dialog with Plex.tv. Unable to claim.
Either installation time was too long or difficulties communicating with Plex.tv exist.
Please try again or seek assistance.

Check your networking. DNS lookup or gateway address is failing.
The message is telling you that it can’t talk out your network to Plex.tv

This is either the Gateway address (modem/router address) or the DNS.

When DNS fails, use 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 to bypass the ISP settings.

I just got my Synology 920+ two days ago and had followed Plex Media Server installation and it said nothing about this! Thank you so much for posting this! It is exactly why I wasn’t getting any movies to show up.
.

No luck there. The NAS is using the same gateway (my fios router) as my laptop. DNS using 8.8.8.8 cannot resolve anything, but using my fios router gateway IP, I am able to resolve plex.tv using nslookup in an SSH session. I can also ping google.com, so it seems to have the correct gateway. Other thoughts on what might be blocking me? NAS firewall is disabled.
Thanks again,
Steve

Hi. I need some help.

Synology DS720+
DSM 7.1-42661 Update 4
Plex Media Server Version 1.21.0-3744

I recently formatted the entire NAS and did a fresh install and setup. I installed Plex Media Server from the Package Center. It appears to install just fine. I set the read/write permissions so PMS has access to the folder where I keep my media.

When I click “Open” to run PMS, I get taken to a web page that states “You do not have access to this server”. This is where I’m stuck. I don’t know how to get past this.

I had PMS installed on here previously, but that was obviously blow out when I remade the NAS. I logged into my Plex account on the web and the only authorized device I see is my web browser. I don’t see an option to add my NAS.

How do I link my NAS to my Plex account so I can use the thing? I’d appreciate any pointers you can offer.

I recommend:

  1. Stop using PMS 1.21.0.3744. It was only meant for DSM 7.0 BETA.
Since that time, it’s become unreliable for many as well as does not match our documentation.

  2. To remedy PMS
    – Uninstall 1.21.0-3744 with the erase option
    – Download PMS 1.29.0 / 1.29.1 (PlexPass - 64 bit Intel) – which I recommend for the HW

  3. When Manually Installing the SPK file
    – Click New or lost servers (Claim Token method)
    – Click Get Plex Claim Token
    – COPY the token from the tab which opens
    – PASTE the token back into the form

  4. Click NEXT NEXT DONE and allow it to install.

  5. (Claim token method adds about 15 seconds to the normal install time. please be patient

  6. When complete, it verifies with “Claimed by: YourPlexUsername”

You may now open in the browser

Your browser was probably still hanging on to the old credentials (common).
Forcing with the claim token makes certain it doesn’t

Thank you so very much. The new version with the token that you pointed to me works. I really appreciate it. Have a great rest of your day.

From this point forward, you can disregard package center until they (hopefully) update it.

A side note for you –

As of PMS 1.21.1.6240

You have Hardware Tonemapping in addition to your Hardware Transcoding with 64 bit Intel CPUS

Did you finally get all your metadata migrated?

Did you ultimately realize that DSM timing out and printing the false error was misleading?

The latest official (non beta) PMS released for Syno Intel 64bit is not compatible with latest stable DSM 7 release - when I go to install it says it requires/expects an older DSM 7 version - can you get them to update the package?

Edit: NVM either it’s been updated or I was just a dummy before

Make certain to select “Synology” or “Synology (DSM7)” correctly from the downloads page ?

Sounds like you grabbed “Synology” the first time?

I dont know, but I got it working after the delete reinstall of dsm 7 and changing the permissions of the media source folders. Appreciate you following up tho.

I deleted my Docker container and switched to using the DSM 7.1 Plex 1.29 native installation. Everything appears to be working, including hardware transcoding and HDR tone mapping! I do have a curiosity though… even though I can transcode 4k to 720p for an Android phone, I see the following in the Plex Media Server logs:

Oct 21, 2022 20:55:22.444 [0x7f7792948b38] ERROR - [Req#6739/Transcode/CDE4EFC4-BDF6-49F9-A270-7F7645DC376A] Error creating directory “/transcode”: Permission denied

Oct 21, 2022 20:56:45.585 [0x7f779393fb38] ERROR - [Req#6c6f/Transcode/CDE4EFC4-BDF6-49F9-A270-7F7645DC376A/7f215c8a-13df-482d-9427-cb98b8bed8da] [aac @ 0x7f2c0e7fb5c0] env_facs_q 255 is invalid

The transcoded video IS playing on my device though. PlexMediaServer account has R/W access to all Synology shares. The trancode temp folder is set to the default “/transcode” folder.

There is no /transcode directory on Synology.
You’re seeing the residual from your Docker configuration.

Settings - Server - Transcoder - SHOW ADVANCED.

Remove /transcode and SAVE.

You’ll be fine after that.

Thanks a lot, ChuckPa. This did the trick. This is absolutely fantastic!

Hi @ChuckPa

I am about to finally migrate to DSM 7 after waiting over a year as I was paranoid about losing data.
Mostly I was worried about my Plex media going bad.

I’d like to ask, are the instructions for updating Plex Media given right back at the beginning of this thread (back in 2021) still the best place to go so that I can follow all the instructions?

Kind Regards

@Fumi88

  1. Uninstall the DSM 6 package – DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING
  2. Upgrade to DSM 7
  3. Download Plex from plex.tv/downloads ( DO NOT USE PACKAGE CENTER)

For you: “Scenario 2” is the most likely configuration you have.

It will bark about permissions on the Plex shared folder.

If you make sure you get them right (DO NOT MISS ANY CHECKBOXES) – including “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files”

It’ll go well – but might take time.

Read this (which I’ve moved to the FAQ) .

Don’t hesitate to ask if you’ve any questions
