Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

Except I now seem to have a duplicate Plex server folder.

The one called ‘PlexMediaServer’ seems to have been added with the new installation after I upgraded to DSM7.

Is it safe to delete this new one?

It seems you missed that in my DOCUMENTATION :man_facepalming:

The new shared folder name is PlexMediaServer and can ONLY contain the server internal files under AppData

The Plex shared folder and user Plex have been abandoned in DSM 7.

I would have removed both but DSM 7 does not grant that privilege to apps anymore (I am no longer ‘root’ while installing).

Look very carefully in the “Plex” share.

You should NOT have Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server.

Migration takes the Plex Media Server directory, processes it, and then moves to PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server

If you wish to keep the “Plex” shared folder for your media – you are free to do so.
Use or dispose of as you wish

@ChuckPa Thank you again for your quick response and detailed explanations. I really do appreciate it.

Kind Regards

I am in need of help again. My Plex server on my Synology DS920+ running 7, was working fine thanks to instructions on here. I made the mistake of installing a second ethernet cable on the back of my NAS, without changing any settings. I let it sit for two days and then went back to using my Plex, but now it says that it is not available, from any of my devices. I removed the second cable (they may have been swapped ?) so now it’s back to one cable, but it’s still the same. Is there a way of “fixing” what I did, or do I have to remove the Plex server and start from scratch ?
Thanks ! Ross

Can you stop Plex
Wait a couple minutes
Start Plex
Wait 3 minutes at least (4-5 preferable)
Stop Plex again

Make a ZIP file of the Logs directory from the PlexMediaServer shared folder.
Download that ZIP and attach here.

We’ll see if we get lucky.

Sigh, Well I am a self declared newby. I tried to do everything you described, but when I go to the shared folder and select plexmediaserver, I don’t see anywhere where I can see a log. Can you help ?

Ok, I think I found it. Try this. !

PMS is defaulting to 192.168.0.2 (because that’s the Syno’s default address)
which is Ethernet adapter 1 (named ‘eth0’)

Does knowing the IP addresses on the Syno and where PMS is running on help you?

I just opened it up and it shows my library again. I’m guessing that by shutting it down and then starting it again, as per your instructions, it brought it back. Life is good again. One question. I added manually the latest Plex server build at the time. I see there have been some changes. Should I add the latest build and manually install it again ? Any quick links to how to do that ?
Thank you so much Chuck !!

PMS 1.30.0 is beta.

Personally, given how fussy Synology is, I recommend staying at 1.29.2 for a bit.

Let it get a couple good weeks (which includes backups, etc) under its belt until you “Manual Install” (yes, that is the only viable method for us . :frowning: ) again

Thanks again Chuck. I appreciate the help.
Happy Thanksgiving (early).

@ChuckPa : it seems you are very knowledgeable about Plex and Synology NAS. I have a question about my recent upgrade from DSM 6 to DSM 7 and the corresponding, recommended upgraded of Plex.

I upgraded Plex to 1.21.0.3744 before upgrade DSM. After the Plex upgrade, Plex was working fine.

I upgraded DSM to 7 and made the recommended adjustments, including the ‘Repair Plex’ recommendation. In the process of doing that Plex asked me to…

  • Select or create a Shared Folder for Plex logs. I just selected the existing Plex shared folder called “Plex”.
  • Note: I did not come to this forum until AFTER my Plex showed a “Something Went Wrong” message.
  • System Internal User ‘PlexMediaServer’ read/write access to the “Plex” shared folder, which I did.

After completing the ‘repair’ and the two items above, Plex Media Server launched and on the Home page stated “Something went wrong
There was an error loading your home screen. Please try again in a few minutes.”

When I went into the NAS and looked at the Plex folder, it ‘looked’ a bit different, I think some folders were missing? Possibly a Collections and/or Playlists folders? But, I could be remembering wrong. The Movies and TV Shows folders were still there and seemed to still contain the content.

Q: what do I do to get the ‘new/improved’ Plex Media Server to see the content files on our NAS?
A: ???

Thanks in advance for your help!

1.21.0.3744 on DSM 6 is fine. No issues there.

The problem you have is PMS 1.21.0.3744 which Synology maintains as valid for DSM 7 … even though they shouldn’t… AND list it as BETA for DSM 7

PMS 1.21.0.3744 (DSM 7) It was for the DSM 7 beta ONLY.

After DSM 7 went Final Release, PMS 1.22.4.3793 was the first production DSM 7 package.

To get you back on the right path here.

  1. Look in the Plex shared folder.
  2. Do you still have Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server ?
  3. If you do, which is exactly what I expect when you hit “Repair”, then we’re in good shape.
  4. If, as I think I understand, you got everything to disappear into the DSM 7 internal storage area (used by Beta only), and your PMS is running, then we can fix that too with ease (and patience)

Please advise.

@ChuckPa : thanks for your quick response and help!
Since posting I noticed that Plex informed me of another update. I downloaded and manually installed that, it was “PlexMediaServer-1.29.2.6364-6d72b0cf6-aarch64_DSM7.spk”.

After installing that, I noticed that there is now a ‘PlexMediaServer’ shared folder on the NAS, presumably created by this most recent update.

I looked in my original Plex shared folder, and the only thing in there are two folders I had created awhile ago: ‘Movies’ and ‘TV Shows’, both of which appear to still have their content. I did not see any ‘Library/Application Support…’ in the Plex folder, IF that is what you were referring to?

Hopefully that helps?

EXCELLENT!

Given you had previously set permissions such that PlexMediaServer (the new username) had proper permissions in the Plex shared folder,

The DSM 7 1.29.2 installer was able to grab all the files and complete the migration from DSM 6 → DSM 7 for you.

In DSM 7,

  1. User Plex is abandoned in favor of System Internal User PlexMediaServer (DSM 7 requirement)

  2. The Plex shared folder is also abandoned in favor of PlexMediaServer where I now keep all your metadata . (requirement)

On DSM 7, I was forced to completely rewrite the package. In doing so, you’ll notice it now has menus and options at installation and deinstallation time. It also supports 8 different languages

If you look in the Syno FAQ, you’ll find updated support help (with screenshots) of what you now have in DSM 7

@ChuckPa : thanks! Yes! After I had manually installed the DSM 7, Plex 1.29.2 upgrade, the Plex Media Server was able to see all of our Movies, TV Shows, Collections and Playlists. Everything seems to have been corrected with that upgrade. And yes, since I had already set the permissions for the ‘PlexMediaServer’ internal system user, it all just flowed together.

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.

Hi guys

I recently updated my Synology NAS to DSM7. I seem to be able to install Plex just fine but when I try launch Plex, it opens, runs for a few seconds then “kills” itself. Also, when I try open Plex on the web browser, I get a screen that says 192.168… refused to connect.

I did some research and some reports say it is a firewall issue but I think this is tied to the DSM7 upgrade as I never had this issue before. My crash log file states the following:

Nov 16, 2022 19:39:55: Failed to initialize logging: Error parsing file at “/var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml”

Hope someone can help.

My previous installation of plex on DSM 7 was working fine (by following instruction from this thread) for months. But it looks like after an automatic update to DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 1 on a DS418 Plex is broken. Plex used to crash about 1 time perf hour ( and I added an automatic restart script) but this time is directly crashing at packet startup. I checked the following logs :
/volume1/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Logs and the last lines are :
Nov 29, 2022 21:17:38: Failed to initialize logging: Error parsing file at "/var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml"tail: ‘Startup Crash.log’: file truncated
Nov 29, 2022 21:34:08: Failed to initialize logging: Error parsing file at “/var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml”

I check permission on the file :
-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 PlexMediaServer PlexMediaServer 849 Oct 25 08:12 Preferences.xml

Only way to fix it was to move backup my old preference file and restart the plex server on the NAS.
mv /PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml /PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml.old

Side effect was the lost of database and need to rebuild it. I dunno if its a problem with Plex and the recent DSM update or something purely related to your installation DeckStar and mine . But maybe ChuckPa can help us on that.

Do you still have the Logs directory and its files so I can see what happened?

This is what you get when Preferences.xml gets damaged/hard crashed for whatever reason (even when DSM does a hard shutdown)
