Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

@paulkc78

There is a way to fix it. I didn’t want to suggest it unless there was no other way.
It involves reinstalling DSM 7 and the apps you have installed.

It will NOT erase your data if you follow the procedure. (I’ve done this several times myself)

Preparation:

  1. Make a list of the apps you have installed.

  2. Control Panel - Backup / Restore - Backup your configuration (in case it’s needed for your shared folders.

  3. Perform the procedure here, paying VERY special attention to the beeping (which is a soft beep – so do this in a quiet space) of the NAS.

You want MODE 2.

  1. Now install DSM 7 again
  • You will also find that, after performing the reset, you can open the NAS by http://ip.addr.of.syno:5000 or as they describe. The choice is yours.

  • The onboard assistant will guide you through DSM reinstallation and share recovery.

  • If you have specific network settings, you can then use Control Panel - Backup/Restore - Restore to restore the configuration you just saved.

  1. After DSM 7 is restored, you can now reinstall the apps.
  • Since app data is stored on the main volume, your configuration data for them (especially Plex) will be there waiting for you.

Since you’re in the US, I might be able to give you a little more assist outside the forums should you need it.

My big concern is that I have files being backed up from another Synology offsite through HyperBackup. Is that configuration going to be restored?

All the files on the NAS will be preserved.

Synology apps (like HyperBackup) keep their configuration in files in @appstore.

@appstore won’t be erased (nor any of the files on your volume) when you reinstall DSM.

I’ll caution you

  1. The instructions tell you to count beeps.

  2. Don’t let go of the button as soon as the beep starts – else it won’t count.

  3. IMPORTANT As soon as the beep ends naturally (at that 3th count) LET GO IMMEDIATELY!!!

  • You want the full beep but NOT the start of the 4th beep.

As you do the first beep, you’ll see Synology is very generous with their timing.

Pay attention to it. Don’t get distracted, and you’ll be fine.

results from the task

Task Scheduler has completed a scheduled task.

Task: plex test
Start time: Wed, 17 Nov 2021 18:08:43 GMT
Stop time: Wed, 17 Nov 2021 18:08:43 GMT
Current status: 0 (Normal)
Standard output/error:
Plex is located at “/volume*/[Pp][Ll][Ee][Xx]"
DSM 6 installation found at "/volume
/[Pp][Ll][Ee][Xx]/Library/Application Support/*”

@Mercsal

My most humble apologies. :man_facepalming:

Please use this.

#!/bin/bash

echo Plex is located at /volume*/[Pp][Ll][Ee][Xx]*

echo DSM 6 installation found at: /volume*/[Pp][Ll][Ee][Xx]/Library/Application\ Support/*

The output should be similar:

chuck@ds418:~$ ./findplex
Plex is located at /volume1/Plex /volume1/PlexMediaServer
DSM 6 installation found at: /volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server
chuck@ds418:~$

When this runs, I really expect to find duplication somewhere.

Mostly same result

Current status: 0 (Normal)
Standard output/error:
Plex is located at /volume1/Plex /volume1/PlexMediaServer
DSM 6 installation found at: /volume*/[Pp][Ll][Ee][Xx]/Library/Application Support/*

@Mercsal

One last time please ( I can’t understand what’s happening )

  1. Plex shared folder

  2. Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server

  3. make me a screenshot please (from Filestation)

According to the script, you don’t have a DSM 6 installation to migrate

It does feel like that. Doing my head in.
I had followed your guides in upgrading to DSM7 exactly. Only steps I potentially missed were adding admin rights to the DSM7 PlexMediaServer user, but did add read/write.

The Library Bsckup folder was created at some point during the update attempts. I copied the Application support folder out as an attempt to fix

edit just seen the missing “library” folder. trying again with script with that created.

added the Library folder in appropriate place

Current status: 0 (Normal)
Standard output/error:
Plex is located at /volume1/Plex /volume1/PlexMediaServer
DSM 6 installation found at: /volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server

Going to retry migration now that seems more resolved. Removing current DSM7 plex install entirely, leaving permissions and reinstalling

@Mercsal

Please check your PM.

Also please advise your progress

I got everything set back up and running a Data Scrubbing operation on my storage. When I tried to run the manual install on Plex, it definitely moved past the earlier error. But, I got to a question about Installation Type, Normal or Install using Plex Claim Token. Wasn’t sure about which way to go.

@paulkc78

If PMS was running normally (signed in and all status OK) then you can give “normal” a try.

“Normal” will leave all the existing account credentials as they are. It will just install software.

“Plex Claim token” goes the extra step. It installs the software PLUS it overwrites any existing credentials (with the credentials from the Claim Token).

I just realized that I should have backed up my Surveillance Station config. I’m guessing that wasn’t in the CP backup I did since I now have nothing after installation.

Ok, I finally have PMS running. What’s the process for getting my old library up and running?

Paul,

If you mean – Get all the permissions right so Plex on DSM 7 can see all the media files again –

If not, please explain

Ok, this is puzzling…before I fixed the permissions, I could sign into PMS but didn’t see any media. Now, I can’t sign in. I get an error screen saying “Not authorized You do not have access to this server.” Any thoughts?

What’s strange, is that I can’t sign in using my administrative user but I can using a managed user. When I sign onto the managed user, it comes up and says “No content available.” Could this be related to the name of the Synology being changed? I couldn’t remember exactly what I had named it previously so I’m thinking the name may be slightly different than before. When I try to click on one of the media folders, I get a message stating that “old name” is currently unavailable. Of course, this still doesn’t explain why I can’t log into the server using my administrative user.

@paulkc78

Are you using the URL link (quick connect) link in package center ?

If you change the NAS name, the URL changes. Synology doesn’t update very fast.

It’s a known problem with how DSM 7 works.

Have you opened the server by http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web (then set a bookmark on your toolbar)

Ahhh. That made a difference.

Now it’s asking me to “Add Library.” I thought it was going to pull in my old library???

Paul,

Confirm you still have your DSM 6 version in the Plex shared folder
( Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server)

If you do –

  1. Uninstall + ERASE option – to remove this empty DSM 7 rogue
  2. Install again.

If it fails to engage, I’m going to give you a Scheduled Task / User-Script to run which will find out what’s happening / what exists inside that NAS.

Same thing after re-install.
