To add to @tom80H’s post…
Two documents that may be of assistance:
- Installation & Setup of Plex Media Server on Synology
- Synology FAQ - Questions, Answers, and a few How-To’s
Regarding the location of your media files:
- Do not use the default folders created by Synology. Those are for use by Synology’s apps. DSM has a nasty habit of resetting permissions and removing read access for Plex.
- Consider making a new shared folder, such as /media, to hold your files. You can then create movie, tv show, etc folders within /media. This avoids conflicts with Synology apps and is mentioned in the documents linked above.
Regarding permissions, here’s the short version:
- Open File Station.
- Right click on the folder holding your media & choose Properties.
- Select Permission Tab
- Make sure PlexMediaServer has at least read permission to the folder (Edit if necessary).
- Important: Check the box for “Apply to this folder…”
- Save
- Wait for DSM to finish checking/setting permissions.
- Then, in Plex, re-scan your libraries
