Qnap Server QTS 4.3.4
Hello,
since the last plex update, there is an “transcode error” while recording Plex Media Server Logs_2018-09-24_06-31-15.zip (4.4 MB)
The recordings starts at 20:05
Any Ideas? What can i do?
Thx very much for help.
Michael,
Thank you for the logs with your OP. It is of great help.
You are using the Multimedia share on QNAP. This is the root of the problem. Multimedia is an application interface. It isn’t the real location of your media shares.
PMS doesn’t limit how many shares you can list. I strongly recommend you transition from using Multimedia to having PMS point to the real share locations for the media (e.g. /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/bilder and /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/Serien - Aufnahmen).
Do this by adding the actual locations first.
As you add, you will see PMS declare them as duplicates. This is expected and 100% normal.
After all real locations have been added, remove the MultiMedia share from the list.
PMS will scan one final time and all locations in the database will be the actual location.
After doing this, you will also need change your DVR recording share. It currently uses /share/MultiMedia . You will also need change these to the real shares.
Sorry to butt in, but this is my first time seeing this. I don’t see way go direct from “SHARE”. My media plays fine as far as I can tell. I created folders in the “MULTIMEDIA” folder that was on the QNAP when it was set up, is that the mistake? Am I creating new folders under share? Currently it looks like this:
If I try to go through share I get that codec string in it:
Just wondering what I’m missing before I transfer any more media and may have to re-do it.
Thank you for the confirm! I created the folders in the already existing “Multimedia” folder, and then pointed PLEX to that so I shouldn’t have to redo my library. Which is good since I’ve been doing a ton of custom tagging and whatnot for “collections.”
When I look at the NAS using windows explorer the folders with the actual media also show in the “Multimedia” folder, no separate sharing thing.
Now you can, from Plex, find the /share/SHARE-NAME by browsing (or just typing in the name) in “Add Folders” in Plex. Do whichever is easiest for you
This is my Animated Library . Notice the path. It points directly to the real volume. /share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/animated and /share/animated are the same location. (linux trick).
Leave the existing MultiMedia reference there until AFTER you’ve added the real folder locations. This prevents your metadata from being deleted because it’s still “active”.
After you’ve added the folders and saved , you will see your media show up as Duplicates (the “2” in the corner). This is expected and desired behavior.
When all are complete, Now you can remove (delete) the reference to the MultiMedia folder(s).
After it makes its last scan of everything,
1 - Scan files
2 - Empty Trash
3 - Clean Bundles
4 - Optimize Database
For the second bit, None of my folders display direct from “Share” as you show. Where you have
" /share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/animated
I’m guessing you created your animated folder from that main CACHEDEV2_DATA directory?
I created all my folders inside a folder that displays as “Multimedia”. So my direct pointing in PLEX would be /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/Multimedia/TV Shows. Where when I browse in the “ADD FOLDER” edit in PLEX, I never click on the ‘SHARE’ folder first, I click on the ‘CACHEDEV1_DATA’.
The folders with my media in them only show if I go through the CACHEDEV/MULTIMEDIA, or SHARE, and I’m going through the CACHEDEV1 so I think I’m okay?
If that MULTIMEDIA folder is a problem, then I’m going to have to move the media too a different folder, which I think screws me for losing my metadata work?
ADD ON: Sorry, I hope I’m making sense, I’m new to this NAS stuff and not sure of the terminology so I may be over-explaining. I really appreciate the help!
Going through /share/MultiMedia is an artificial interface. If you ever disable or update MultiMedia or the CodecPack, PMS will lose your media and metadata. We’ve seen it countless times. Warnings to this are in the QNAP FAQ.
Here’s what I recommend: ( I assume CACHEDEV1 is all your storage as one big block )
Settings - Server - Library
Disable “Automatically update my library when changes detected”
Disable “Empty trash after each library scan”
(this preserves everything while moving.
Save the changes
Stop PMS
Create a “TV Shows” share on CACHEDEV1 and make it shareable to your windows computer. As you’re creating this share, you will see you can declare it as containing video (media). This is how the MultiMedia share is supposed to be used. Let it construct a virtual folder view of your media.
In QNAP FileStation,
Open the “TV Shows” folder in there,
Highlight everything (each of your Series)
Right-Click and Move to the “TV Shows” share. This won’t take long because moving in Linux is really a “rename” operation.
When it’s done, open the new “TV Shows” share in FileStation and see everything there. This is your confirmation.
Now Start PMS
Edit the TV Shows Library
ADD/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/TV Shows by browsing to it (safest way)
Save
PMS will scan your TV shows.
You see it mark each as having a duplicate. This is expected and desired
When all scanning is done and you’ve verified it all shows as duplicates,
Edit the Library again and delete the reference to the MultiMedia folder.
Save
It will scan one final time.
You will see all the duplicate (2) flags being removed.
When complete: Empty Trash, Clean Bundles, and Optimize Database
If you wish to move more libraries like this, move to the next one
When completed with all media relocation,
Settings - Server - Library
Enable “Automatically Update my Library when changes detected”
Empty the trash after each scan.
You can perform one final Scan, Empty Trash, and Clean Bundles if you wish.
Now, MultiMedia is happy and PMS are happy.
As FINAL step, update the drive mapping in Windows to point to the new share for your TV shows
I can’t thank you enough. I really appreciate the simple steps. Currently doing the moving. Tried it on a small folder that I had and seemed to work fine. All metadata transfered and the path is now “share/cached/movie” so I should finally be safe from future problems!
