Unable re-install Plex on NAS on DSM 6.X

Hi

I am desperate and need help.

Due to problems wanted to completely uninstall my Plex Media Server on my NAS and reinstall everything.

I deleted everything, really everything partly automatically and partly manually.

Now I have the problem that I have Plex installed but can not run. The message is: Failed to run the package service.

The Plex update is already updated to 1.25.0.5282-6000.

No, I don*t have a backup :frowning:

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any advice and help.

Emine

Server Version#: DSM 6. 2 4
Player Version#: ?

  1. Synology Model (including any +, j, etc):

  2. Please pull the log files and attach to the thread. Since Plex Media Server is not running, you’ll need to do so manually. See FAQ 1: Gaining access to the Plex logs or when PMS isn’t running / won’t start. Attach the ZIP file to the thread.

Thanks for your reply FordGuy.

I attached the logfile and some screenshots.

The attached logfile is after I installed Plex the second time.

Are you running Plex Media Server on the DS214 or on a PC?

The log files are from a Windows 10 system.

I am running it from NAS and like in the screen shot the log file on NAS is missing or not created as I am unable to run the program.

Something went wrong with installing Plex Media Server on the DS214. There should not be a recycle folder in the Plex shared data folder. Also, the username should be plex, not PLEX.

As the Plex Media Server folder is empty, there is no metadata, play history, etc to save.

I suggest completely removing Plex Media Server from the DS214 and starting over from scratch.

Step One: Read this document regarding running Plex on DSM 6 based NAS: Installation & Setup of Plex Media Server on Synology

Step 2: Completely Uninstall Plex Media Server from the DS214 (FAQ #9)

  1. Package Center - Remove the Plex package
  2. Control Panel → Users - Delete user Plex (or PLEX, plex, etc)
  3. Control Panel → Shared Folders - Delete the Plex shared folder
  4. Restart the DS214

Step 3: Download the current Plex Media Server package from plex.tv

  1. Go to https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/
  2. Choose Synology
  3. Choose the ARMv7 version for x14 Series.

Step 4: Manually install Plex Media Server on the DS214

Following the steps in the Installation & Setup Guide linked above, perform a manual installation of Plex Media Server with the file you just downloaded from Plex. Do not install the version provided by Synology, as it is approximately two years out of date.

Here is a direct link to the Install Plex Media Server section of the guide.

That should get you up and running. Respond back if you run into any problems with the installation process.

Thank you. I will try and keep you informed.

By removing Plex, should I remove also all folders, shared folders and permissions too?

Removing the app, the plex user, and the plex shared folder will take care of permissions, etc.

The user and shared folder will be re-created when you re-install Plex on the DS214.

After re-installing Plex on the NAS, you will have to give the user Plex at least read-only permissions to where your media is stored. This is covered in the Install Guide immediately after the “Installing Plex” section.

Note that the Plex shared folder is reserved for use by the Plex Media Server application. Do not place any of your movies, shows, or other media in that folder or any subfolder. If you do place media there, Plex will not run correctly. There are warning messages, but some videos on YouTube give incorrect advice.

Hi FordGuy61

I have upgrade my DSM from 6.xx to 7.0 and installed Plex manually and it is working fine now.

Thank you so much for your quick help and wish you and your family marry christmas and a happy and healthy New Year 2022.

Emine

Glad you have it working.

One question: Did you install the beta version from the Synology Package Center, 1.21.0.3744?

If so, consider updating to the current version available at https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/. It has the latest bug fixes and enhancements.

When you install the current version, it will create a shared folder, /plexmediaserver, and move the Plex data folder (the old /Plex folder) to that location. See the “Packaging 2.0” document for details. Depending on the amount of data, it might take some time to perform the migration (minutes to hours). Don’t stop it, just let it run.

Hope you & yours have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as well.
