I am new to PMS. I have a Windows 10 Home computer running Version 10.0.19044 x-64 with 32 GB RAM and 16 TB HDs. I have installed PMS on a new Synology DS-220+ NAS (with the latest DMS). As a test, since I’m new to this, I loaded about 20 movies (.mkv) to the 1st HD on the DS-220+. The first time I did this (2 days ago) I could see the movies and play them on my smart TV on the network (I used the Plex recommended name convention of: Movie name (year). When I tried to add more folders (each movie is in its own folder) PMS deleted all the existing movies in the “Movies” library. I now cannot add anything to the “Movie” library. All I get is the notification that “Movies” is empty. I can get to PMS through the web app and have tried for 2 days to overcome this problem. No matter what I do “Movies” is always empty. Manage Libraries>Add Library does nothing. Scan Library Files does nothing. I have “Merge Recently Added Items” checked. I can see the folder and inside them the actual movies on the Synology DS-220+, but I have no way to add the movies to PMS.
Shouldn’t this be something as simply as cut and paste or click and drag from the Synology HD to the PMS? I’d be grateful for any assistance to get PMS to accept folders into the libraries I’ve want to use (Movies, TV Shows, Music and Photos).
ChuckPa, I tried to follow your instuction and almost immediately there was a difference between your instructions and PMS.
Opened File Station
Plex Media Server listed
So do I need to Create to open permission Manager (Have never seen it in File Station) even though PlexMediaServer is visible? Clicked on Permissions. (If I need to Create a new permission for PlexMediaServer How do I do that and where?)
I made sure admin and my media server both had read/write permissions. Completely lost with this. Does not follow your instructions.

I can’t add ANY folders to the “MOVIES” I set up when I installed PMS on my NAS. I don’t understand why Plex has made what should be a simple cut and paste or a click and drag process into a convoluted, non-intuitive process. I have the movie files named according to the Plex standard [name (year)]. I have granted admin and my PMS permissions for read/write. I have each movie file in a separate folder by the name of the movie. First time (3 days ago) I set this up it worked with a test of 10 movies. When I tried to add to MOVIES, plex deleted the 10 movies and I have been unable to add ANYTHING since then to MOVIES. Every time I try, MOVIES comes back as empty, though I see the movies on my NAS. Why is this so complicated?
In that second screenshot, you need to change the drop-down in the upper left from “local Users” to something like “System Internal User”. In 7.0, Plex was forced to change to an entirely different account type, with its own permissions requirements. In THERE, you should see a “Plex Media Server” user, which you need to grant full (or at least read) access to the share.
Edit: I think? I recall needing to go there when reading the steps to get DSM7 working with Plex. By the time it came out, I had already transitioned from DSM to a standalone box for my server, so I haven’t actually done any of these steps myself. But I recall a lot of problems people had with finding the new advanced share for the PMS user.
Divideby0, I have the latest DSM version. I set up the NAS 3 days ago, brand new and install PMS as instructed by Plex and other experts. PMS resided on the 1st drive of the NAS. After the initial setup, I loaded 20 movies, each in their own folder in the “Movie” folder of the NAS as Plex instructed. The movies are named according to Plex convention [name (year)], the folders with just the movie title. I tested this initial loadout and was able to see the movie and their metadata, and watch the movies on my smart TV on the LAN (my ultimate goal for the NAS). After this success, I tried adding more movies and Plex deleted everything. Now I am unable to load ANY movies into the “Movie” folder in Plex. Every time I try to load anything the “Movie” folder remains empty. I have looked through dozens of internet articles and Plex’s community support and no one seems to understand the problem or have any solutions. It’s ultimately a very simple issue. I want to add movies to an existing Plex folder. As far as I can tell all the necessary permissions are granted so I don’t know what the problem is. This really should be a simple cut and paste or click and drag operation, but Plex has made it so convoluted, non-intuitive and opaque that I can’t figure it out. PLEX-remember KISS.
Yeah, it all sounds like it should be simple. I was wondering about the DSM, because I brought up my 6.x DSM NAS and I went to the same location (permissions) for my share. I also do not see a place to create a permission rule, so I wondered if it was something in the newest 7.x versions but not 6.x.
Try to poke @ChuckPa some more. He is the Plex developer who created the Synology Plex server builds, so he REALLY knows what’s what. I’m just some rando who had a Plex NAS at one time, probably poking my head where it doesn’t quite belong.
Edit: Re Videos stopped working: I haven’t had that issue before, but it sounds like what other people have had issues with related to permissions. Like, it working at one time, but not later on. A strange thing, but I’m leaning towards permissions…
I’m with you though, I will watch this conversation closely to see how it turns out.
It looks like you are trying to edit the permissions of the shared folder Plex Media Server folder. folder should be left alone and you should not be putting your media files in there anyway. it is where the application files are for it to run
You need to give the shared Movies folder or which ever you keep your media files the permission for the user plexmediaserver which is what his instructions are for
I have Plex Media Server loaded on a Synology 220+ NAS. I was able to create a Movie folder in Plex and load my movies to it successfully. But after five days of attempting to add a shared folder for TV Shows to Plex Media Server without success, today Plex somehow added four folders for TV series:
MFCSShared Folder
TV Shows
TV Shows
TV Shows
File Station does not even show two of the TV Show folders and in Plex all the folders are empty and I’m finding it impossible to add any media to any of the four folders in Plex.
You created 4 new “libraries” in Plex, but did appear not tell these libraries what folder to look at.
For example, I can make a library called Super Fun Time Movies!, which points to boring actual folder names such as /Media/Movies/Action and /Media/Movies/Drama. Most likely, if you click the pencil icon and the word Edit Library at the right side of your server management panel, you will see you are not targetting anything, so it shows up as empty.
I don’t know how those four libraries were created, I tried for five days to create a library for tv show without success, then suddenly last night the four libraries were there. As of last night, the folder MFCSShared Folder was present in DSM file station, and media was stored in it, one season of “The Shield.”
This morning I checked the folders and somehow one season of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had appeared in the TVShows folders, but my own media “The Shield” is still not present in MFCSShare Folder. When I go to Mange > Libraries I see the five libraries (Movies, MFCSShared Folder and 3 TV Shows )
I am a complete novice with Plex so probably many of the most obvious steps are unknown to me.
Breathe  (Doing that :grimacing:)
Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced – Make sure DEBUG logging is on
(it should be … it’s the default) (Done it)
Stop Plex (HOW?? Sign out?)
Manually make a ZIP file of the Logs directory under “Plex Media Server” (Where is this?)
Download it from DSM and upload here.
