Watchlist update and Credits

Seems like this is a known issue, but none of my remote servers are showing up in the “Watch from these locations” feature on detail pages in my Watchlist. This is happening on both the Roku Plex app and the iOS app. My local servers are showing up just fine, just not the remote ones.

It seems quite inconsistent…

On the web app, Pick a film then select an actor it shows only some of the libraries they are in (across multiple servers, both Movies and TV libraries). But not all. Selecting one of the servers, then going back, sometimes more libraries will appear. Same if you go back the movie then click the actor again

If I do the same on my Shield, I will often get a different set of libraries as the web app.

Also on the shield I do not see the “Known for” row, and there seems to be a rendering glitch, where on first load, the bottom of Media Library Boxes do not show fully. if you click to go back up through the screen and then back down the boxes do then show fully.

I’ve been fairly easily able to reproduce this using the android app on the shield. It appears to be timeout, something around 2 seconds. If you select a cast member and it takes more than 2 seconds to fetch the list of stuff they are credited in then it will timeout and display a blank or partially populated page. I guess the query they use is either inefficient or the timeout is too strict. Force killing / fulling exiting the app and then launching again will help but not always.

Its not been added to the android app yet but is coming. I seen it mentioned on some thread over the past few days.

@BigWheel @Atomatth quick question.

Will credited cast images always come from the plex cloud (images.plex.tv / discover.provider.plex.tv) or will they ever come from the metadata stored locally on our plex servers ? Many cast images on the show/movie pages differ to the ones from the credited cast page, example below:

Screenshot from 2022-11-05 12-59-52 compared to Screenshot from 2022-11-05 13-00-24

Same question for show/poster artwork for shows and movies within the Known For section …

I also suspect this new credited page won’t work well for clients with no external internet connection but I’ve not had a chance to test it yet.

Yes, because those pages and posters pull from Discover they will use the images stored there. The desire to somehow use PMS images instead as been mentioned before here and raised internally. As for the Offline experience, you’re correct, credit pages won’t work at all. This is known and something that we’ll improve.

Okay, thanks. I’ve discover disabled so its never impacted me before. It is now. Anyhow, thanks, I understand.

The “Movies & Shows on Plex” row shows up on the Actor bio page even though I have “Movies & Shows” unpinned. Hopefully that is a bug and not a feature.

I have spotty Internet, so I am glad to hear that you have plans to make this behave properly even if there is no Internet access.

The “Known for” row shows up on the Actor bio page even though I have “Discover” disabled.

They’ve intentionally done this and it currently can’t be disabled. Please see Remove "Known For and Filmography" from Cast Discover Credits and vote if you agree with the request.

You will need to Disable Movies & Shows on Plex to remove their hub on the Credits page.

If by “disable” Movies & Shows on Plex you mean that I should “unpin” it, it is already unpinned, and that row still shows up on the actor bio page.

Atomatth is referring to disabling it in https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/online-media-sources

Thanks, that worked.

So I’ve had a little while to play around with the new features. Thoughts/comments:

Pluses…

  1. Watchlist on the sidebar. Easier to get to. Will probably help people find it. Makes sense.
  2. The fact that an actor bio page shows movies & shows from multiple libraries. I know this has been on a lot of people’s wish list. Good job.
  3. I personally am OK with the filmography button that shows up on my Apple TV & Roku. However, I dislike the fact that the complete filmography list always shows up at the bottom of the actor bio page on Plex for Windows. Too cluttered. Bury it within a filmography button like you are doing with the Plex streaming device apps. IMHO

Negatives…

  1. PLEASE lose the Twitter, Instagram, etc. handle stuff on the bio page, or at least let me turn it off in “Online Media Sources”. The screen is cluttered enough without adding more stuff that I know most Plex users could care less about. Seriously, PLEASE. Less is more.
  2. PLEASE let me turn off the “Known for” discover stuff and/or bury it within the Filmography button result page. The bio page is too cluttered.

With all of these new things you’re adding to integrate the app with your Plex Movies & TV’s push, please continue to remember those of us who still only care about our own media, and give us the option to turn-off/hide/bury the other stuff.

Unrelated/off-topic, but while you’re at it…

  1. Do you think you can finally let us turn off the row with Rotten Tomatoes film reviews, perhaps another option Online Media Sources? This has been requested many times by others over the years. It’s very annoying to see “splats” on movies I like.
  2. Any plans to make the movie “Director” clickable/selectable on streaming devices like Apple TV, Roku, etc. so that you can see other things they have directed. It is already clickable on Plex for Windows. Love that feature.

I mostly agree with some of the points you made, but…

I’m not sure why you think this, I actually think they could get away with adding more to the Actor pages, such as an additional row that displays episode guest appearances (The Apple TV+ app actually handles this really well).

Side note: I actually find “Known For” VERY useful for Actors that have a huge history, it basically puts the more “popular” entires at the front which makes figuring out where you know somebody from a little quicker than diving into the entire filmography. It also doesn’t help that the filmography doesn’t have any posters.

Love the new credits page, lots of information and very well structured. A couple of issues I have encountered:

  1. if I have a lot of movies for a specific actor, when I click on it, it takes a few seconds to load and then the row “Movies & Shows in Media Libraries” does not appear. If i go back and forth a few times it eventually appears, and keeps appearing immediately for some time. After a while, the same behaviour repeats.

  2. if a movie is tagged with a specific edition, then it will not appear in the row “Movies & Shows in Media Libraries” for any actor. I have tested this with a few movies I have the tag enabled for and it happens every time.

Great start though, I hope to see this improved and polished over time, it has already come in handy to find new movies.

This issue has now been resolved on Web with the lastest release. Please see the release notes.

Fixed an issue that could cause the “Watch from these locations” hub to not show up for users who opt out of seeing availabilities from other Streaming Services on Detail Pages

I can confirm, fixed both on Web and Plex for Windows.

I have all the online sources disabled so I only see “Movies & Shows in Media Libraries” and the media libraries themselves, but in the Filmography section I still see “On Plex” next to items alongside “On Media Server Name”.

It would be nice to be able to disable this.

IMO, the Watchlist should manage the shows and movies we are currently interested in…as I scan the new releases weekly and with a quick click, add to my watchlist to watch this weekend. If I’m doing this wrong, I’m open to suggestions, anything that makes content management easier!

On the android App whether you have the plex discover feature enabled or not, clicking on an actor from one of your libraries, gets you to the actor’s page, which is awesome. Can the same be done with the other clients such as web? With Web you have to do that through the discover items and not your libraries’ items.
