Xbox One New Update - dimming during video play

Stock dashboard and kinnect and xboxone system up to date. Did hard reboot did not fix. Then yesterday it just stopped dimming. Then came back again today. Tried without kinect but still dims. As a paying PlexPass user this is disappointing as it has been great app so far - this is turning me off.

I usually navigate to Plex via either the media remote or voice control. I rarely 'quit' the app after I finish using it so don't normally get the spinner when re starting - I wouldn't expect to have to quite the app each time.

Agreed - I wouldn’t expect you to have to close the app each time either. Still trying to get to the bottom of how this is happening when no pause/subtitles selected so just after as much detail as possible from people. Will let you know when we catch this one. Again - exact steps on how you played the video with what screens you saw on the way is going to be the biggest help. Thanks for all the info so far.

I'm having the same problem, standard xbox one set up, Kinect, I sign into xbone, select plex with controller select video and play, dims after 3min black out completely after 5/6, to correct have you move controller stick or pause and play

Please could you confirm that you see the problem with these steps:

 - Start Plex, see spinner (this indicates the app is starting fresh)

 - Move to the right to choose a video

 - Press X to play, or press A to go to the video preplay?

 - Playback starts (immediately? is there a spinner?)

 - No on screen controls shown

 - No further interaction with controller or kinect

 - Screensaver kicks in after 5 minutes during video playback

If people are seeing the issue with steps other than those above, please let me know what's different. Please also mention what you see at the steps marked with '?'s.

Something is clearly not disabling the screensaver during playback, and this is a bug. This will result in the behaviour you're seeing where you need to move the controller. Once this behaviour has kicked in, you need to restart the app/device.  I'm still trying to work out (other than pause and changing subtitles/quality), how this can happen.

Thanks again!

I would suggest, disable the screensaver alltogether, take all the time you need to fix it and bring it back. But like this the app seems very unusable so I'd say, don't FIX the error if it is taking days now, just remove the function, then fix it..

My 2 cents.

I agree with DanielHH, remove the screensaver function introduced in the last update so we can at least use the app while you fix the bug.

Hey guys,

We're really sorry about this issue, and we're doing everything we can to work out the issue and get a fix out as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the release process for the Xbox One does not allow us to quickly just make a hot fix, and therefore it can take a number of days. We are doing everything we can!

That said, no one has yet been able to provide suitable steps to reproduce the actual issue. If anyone can provide detailed instructions of how to take the application from a "working" state, to a "broken" state, that would be massively helpful. We'd be able to get the fixes out much sooner. So if you think you can reproduce this easily, please can you...

  • On the Xbox One home screen, press the "menu" button on the Gamepad and select "Quit"
  • Start the Plex application
  • Take a note of exactly what steps / actions you perform inside the app, until you play a video and the screensaver kicks in

Once you've done that, please post in here. Thanks in advance

Ian

(I know that this issue isn't "Solved" but I wanted to make this post more visible to users who are experiencing this. Please read and provide as much information as possible)

Plex dimms and goes to black each time I play the second video. Only the first one plays fine. No interaction for the rest. Resume, restart, show menu or not, subtitles or not doesn't have any effect. I would say remove the screensaver/dim function. There's no need for it. There's a sleep function on the xbox one and there's probably a screensaver function on your tv so leave it out. Now that I'm thinking about it... I' going to disable the sleep function of the xbox one tonight and see if it still occurs...

So are you watching the first video to completion? Does the application go back to the video preplay when it finishes, or are you navigating back using the controller?

How do you then select the second video? Are you going back to the browse page, or via 'more like', or some other way I've probably missed?

I'm afraid it's not getting triggered on 'just' the second video over here - so I'm clearly missing some important difference. Sorry to sound like a broken record!

Please can you read this post and provide as much information as you can: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/130738-xbox-one-new-update-dimming-during-video-play/?p=788154

Thanks in advance

Not having the issue above, but if you guys are going to leave it in please put in an option to be able to disable it. At least then if people continue to see the issue (or those of us that don't want the feature) they can turn it off.

Answer :

Yes I watch a full episode of series x via the homescreen via on deck.
When finished It goes back to the info screen of the played episode.
I go back (via button B) to go back to the homescreen.
The next episode is on deck, I press the a button and start watching the episode… then after a couple minutes I gets the darker image and than after a couple minutes it turns black while the video is still playing. You can hear the audio.
Press B and you’re back at the info screen. Resuming will play it again fine for a couple minutes.
If I play a movie or another episode via the homescreen of via whatever afterwards… they all will dimm after a couple minutes.
Quitting the app via the menu-button does not help. Only a restart of the console will help.
10 second hold, software reboot, unplugging the power cable for 30 seconds did not help anything.

So what I have been doing lately is watch a video, restart and watch another one. Works each time

Like I said before. If you complete a video and you leave Plex on the info screen or homescreen it will also turn to black after a while.
You don’t have to play a second video to trigger the dimming it seems.

To do later today :
Start console and watch something. Interrupt it and resume to see if it play fine this way.
I have already disabled the sleep function of the xbox one all together to see if that makes any difference.

Glad to help and give info. We’ll find it sooner or later

Sorry for the length

Plex

Turn Xbox on using controller (instant on)

Home screen navigate down to Plex press a.

Spinning icon.

The Plex library, recently added television and recently added movies is displayed.

Navigate my library (selected top folder) using controller.

Select browse.

Select the to show series.

Select the season.

Select the episode.

Click play icon in the top left corner (screen dimmed as i was typing this so not even playing yet as typing before doing the action)

As noticed screen dim I moved to the watched icon that back up again but the screen didn’t brighten.

Pressed play.

Screen went black after 30 seconds max.

Pressed a could here the Xbox bong but no picture returned (audio was still playing)

Pressed b went back to episode screen with the three icons in the top left (note picture returned and the screen was the correct brightness now).

Pressed a to play again.

Episode played perfectly then returned to the episode screen with the three icons in the top left.

Turned the controller back on

Press b three times

Selected the next series

Selected the season

Selected the episode

Pressed play icon

Had to pause the episode after 7 minutes for ~20 minutes came back screen was black as I think it should be.

Resumed play back using controller.

Video played flawlessly.

Selected next shows as outlined above.

Seems to be playing fine.

Seems like different results to what I was having before. Only difference before I was going in and out of the app to the home screen

Just tried some thing

Before the next thing I watch I pressed the Xbox button on the controller to return to the home page on the baseboard then returned to Plex.

on the next thing I watched the screen dimmed and I couldn’t make it brighter by moving the joystick on the controller. the display then went black with audio playing

The only thing I could do again was press b to return to the page in Plex with the three icons in the top left hand corner and press play again.

So it doesn’t like returning to the dashboard.

Regarding the video I was watching I pressed play and resumed from where it had got to and the video seems to be playing fine.

this only works for a bit! then it does it again!

Tried again to night started plex don’t think I got a sinning icon. It loaded the recently aired page then it displayed an error saying had to go back home.

Started the first video and the screen dimmed but again I couldn’t make it undim using the controller. I had to wait until the screen went black then press b twice to exit then resume the video which has been fine since no dimming.

Thanks for all the steps, they're all helpful.

Will let you know how we get on with this. Apologies again for the annoyance.

Upate :

Turning the sleep function of the Xbox One off does NOT help or change anything.

The screen will dimm even when you leave it at the homescreen and will turn black after a while. Press back and the light is back !
