Xbox One New Update - dimming during video play

I am no longer able to reproduce after a few restarts of the xbox..When I did reproduce, this is what happened (Stock dashboard without Kinect):
- started Xbox
- opened Plex
- saw the spinning icon (as expected as the xbox was switched off)
- started watching a video
- after about 5 minutes the screen dimmed

Subsequently, I am unable to reproduce. Xbox is now set for fast startup, and every time I watch a video, whether that's a number of tv shows or a movie, the screen no longer dims.

For those not able to reproduce.

Uninstall Plex app and re-install it again.

Problem will be back. :)

same problem

I use smartglass on my mobile phone to control plex. Simply touching the screen on the remote function takes away the dim in the movie. The xbox obviously registers activity. For those with a controller a button press is required but on smartglass this is a minor annoyance as you can continue watching without returning home or whatever as all you need to do is touch the screen and the dim is gone.

Any update on this?

I have Kinect and I am in the preview program. I have the screen dimming on some videos not all. I have learned if we wake up the xbox by saying xbox it will come back tell it to stop listing and ok for xx amount of time.

Kinect - Xbox - Smart Glass and Harmony

I noticed when it happened to me, it was as if it was stuck on voice commands.

So "Go back" was constantly displayed in top left corner.

And if I went to movies I had the "select 1, 2, 3 " etc all there.

Was as if it was waiting for voice input.

Quiting app, restarting plex, different selection all the same.

Rebooted xbox one and all went back to normal.

done all of this! but after a few times it start dimming again! We need a fix!

Until today i have not had the dimming problem, no matter what i watched it worked perfectly. Today i watched a bluray rip of a game of thrones episode and about 15 minutes in it came to a foreign language scene and as subtitles did not come on automatically (i think I'm missing a setting whilst ripping?), i paused it, pressed the 3 dots menu button and selected english subtitles which made the screen go black for 1 to 2 seconds before returning then i pressed play and it continued with subtitles. A couple of minutes later the screen went dim (which i didn't really notice, i just thought it was a dark scene) and then a few minutes after that it went completely black with the audio playing. I continued watching the episode pressing a button on the remote to wake it up when it happened.

Later i watched a workout video with no subtitles and it was fine, at the end i started it again with subtitles which caused the dimming problem. Playing it again (no restart of the app or xbox, start from begining rather than resume from where it left off) with no subtitles it works perfectly fine. So in my case it is caused by enabling subtitles.

My xbox always turns off (fast on is disabled) and to get to my videos, i load the app seeing the spinning icon, go to workout videos section, press browse, select the workout set (tv show basically), select the season, select the episode, press play. Then whilst watching the video, selecting subtitles causes the issue.

I hope this helps (though by the sounds of it, it might not be related to everyone else's). Let me know if there is any further information i can provide.

EDIT 1: I'm using the logitech harmony ultimate remote if that matters, i have not tried it with the xbox controller yet but i doubt that would make a difference?

EDIT 2: I also have kinect enabled (though hidden because it causes problems with workout videos whilst stretching etc.)

I do have a Kinect and it is dimming

this is happening to me all the time now. It use to be once in a while but I did the Plex server update today to the latest version and it seems to be worse

I have Kinect, but haven't used the voice or gesture commands on Plex, and the dimming occurs anywhere from every 90 seconds to every 3 minutes. Last night watched Porco Rosso (Miyazaki film) in MP4 format with hard subtitles (Plex subtitle support stinks, but that's another story...) and it dimmed every minute, at least. Hitting random buttons on the Harmony remote would undim it.

Watched DVD-ripped New Girl (MKV) with muxed subs the night before, and it never dimmed. I have not done a hard reset of Xbox in about a week. I almost always use my Harmony One Remote. I know I did last night for Porco Rosso.

I had uninstalled and reinstalled Plex before both New Girl and Porco Rosso.

I don't know if the Xbox controller was "awake" during either New Girl or Porco Rosso.

edit:

Update, I  watched (er, tried to!) a previously unwatched MKV file, using Plex's Opensubtitle Agents, and using the Xbox controller, and it still dimmed. I then plugged the still active Xbox controller in the side USB port of the Xbox (per another user's suggestion) and it still dimmed. Using version 0.9.11.5

Second update:

Launched the server via IE (Windows 8.1), went back to the Xbox, quit Plex with start menu, watched another (previously unwatched) MKV with same Agents and same controller as above, and it didn't dim.

I'm wondering if keeping the server open ("launched") on whatever browser keeps it from dimming on Xbox?

Is there any way this could be related to where movies are selected from? I got this issue today for the first time in many films and the only difference as I recall was that it was selected from the deck rather than my usual place which is to go into the folder structure and choose to browse the entire folder. Just a thought.

same here, the only time I've had this happen its been after manually enabling subtitles following the steps you outline.

so I played the same movie twice today. I ripped the same movie to mkv one at 1080p 12Mbps with DTS-HD and one at 1080p 8Mpbs with Stereo

The xbox did NOT dim when playing the 12Mbps movie but kept pausing every 5-15minutes, no idea why. The xbox one video would freeze and the option was there to pause the video, so it wasn't paused but it wasn't playing. Then after 30 seconds it would play again and repeat. nothing I could do would change this

so I ripped the same movie down to 1080p 8Mbps with stereo sound and the movie played all the way through with no freezing. However, every few minutes the screen would dim.

What the hell is going on here?

Stock dashboard, no kinect, screen goes black every few minutes.

I have Kinect and have had this for a few days now. Not clear from these posts, does the hard reboot stop it from happening again? Going to try that as trying to watch a movie with this bug is totally annoying. Love Plex though :) Is anyone doing skins and can it take them. I have a HTPC and was considering losing it from the cinema room when I got the Xbox One, but still running it through for channels and the much better skin.

hard reboot fixes nothing for me

Every single file I play does this. I use a logitech remote, I'm normally playing from the On Deck section of Plex. Xbox One connected to Onkyo AV Receiver connected to Samsung Plasma. I'd give the exact steps, but every way I play I file, causes the screen to dim.

Hey guys. Sorry for the lack of updates - we're working hard with MS to release a fixed version of this as soon as we can. We've gone for removing the feature for now, since we can't reproduce the issue with the steps many of you have.

Thanks again for the helpful steps and details. Will let you know when we know more.
