[BUG] Home screen does not update with recently added items unless app is restarted - Android TV

Server Version#: 1.23.3.4707
Player Version#: 8.20.1.26670

Adding new TV shows & movies to my server, I noticed that the Recently Added TV & Recently Added Movie Hubs are not updating on my Android TV(Shield) homescreen unless I force quit the app, etc.

I have attached a log file where the “last” movie that is shown as added is “Evan Almighty”, even though “Bee Movie” was the last movie to be added. I then force quit the app and restart it and my homescreen is updated. This should be captured in the log (the incomplete load, the quitting of the app, the complete load…)

It should also be noted that these Hubs do not update at all, even when navigating between libraries, etc… The only way for them to update is for me to force quit the app. I don’t experience this issue on any of my other clients.

UPDATE: After further testing, I found that clicking on any one of the items in the affected Hub will force a reload of that Hub and then I will actually see all of my newly added content, but this should not be the case.

SECOND UPDATE: Clicking on any items in the affected Hub does not always force a reload of that Hub - the only reliable method of reloading the Hub is force quitting the app.

The homescreen should be updated dynamically like it is for the other clients. I swear this was not the behavior in the app until very recently.

Issue also occurs in Modern Layout or in Classic Blurred layout.

Thank you.

I can confirm this bug. I actually raised it back in June but got no response

Yeah… I think I am leaving the beta builds to be honest…
Such a shame because I’ve reported like 10 bugs in the last 3 weeks and, like you, haven’t gotten responses on hardly any of them. What’s the point of beta builds, with engaged users like you & myself, if we are completely ignored?

Roku is nice because you can use both channels, beta & public, so when crap inevitably breaks in the beta, you can just switch to public while it gets worked out in beta. I know that the way it is done for Android is a Google limitation and not a Plex one, but still a bummer.

I left the beta build for Android and it is still only half working in the latest public build - homescreen will update if you navigate to a different library and then back, but won’t update when you are just sitting on the homescreen.

I really want to like my Shield & use it on a daily basis because it is so much faster/more responsive than the Roku that I have, but the Plex app is NOT stable in the slightest.

100% agree which is one reason I’m not on here as much anymore. It’s somewhat pointless or at least feels that way.

Yeah, I feel you. Been with Plex for 6 years now and I don’t like the direction in which we are headed. Emby has been running in parallel for a while now - if I didn’t have external users to train I would probably just switch to Emby completely.

Left the Beta & installed the Public build.
Used Emby all of last night and fired up Plex this morning - recently added TV was current but recently added movies was not.

I’ll post more logs, if any Plex employee cares, or you can look at my logs from the initial post. Might need to start training people on Emby sooner rather than later.

Thank you.

I generally hate that I need to close the Plex app altogether to get it to update. A simple way to update Plex on Android TV will make it a lot easier

The Android app is a shameful disgrace. It alone has led me to use Emby exclusively for the last 2 days.

I’m experiencing this as well on the latest server and Android TV beta. Two different Android TV devices are having this issue.

This also happens on the latest non-beta. 8.22.0.27533.

During the Android 8.15.xx fiasco that created all these UI problems, I started running Jellyfin in parallel on my system. It didn’t help that Plex Live TV/DVR is a dysfunctional mess.

Last week, I’d finally had enough and have uninstalled all Plex software (clients and server) on all my computers/devices. I use Jellyfin and NextPVR now. Now, when I go to the living room to watch TV on my Fire Stick, I no longer think “how’s it not going to work today”. Trying to use Plex causes so much unnecessary stress.

Having the same issue on my LG-tv webos app. Kinda frustrating.

Same issue on Shield TV. To be honest, the Android PLEX app has been riddled with bugs. Simple things like rewinding doesn’t even work properly. Definitely going to try Emby now.

Brought up in beta released to public cuz that’s how Plex rolls.

Yep. I brought this bug up when I was in the beta build… Left the beta build because I was tired of bugs, still seeing a bunch of the bugs I reported in beta builds in the public.

Pretty great.

@marekszulik - Can you confirm you are aware of this bug and it is being worked? This has been brought up as an issue as early as version 8.18, and it is still an issue in the latest stable version.

Thank you.

Bueller?

This is an extremely irritating bug. For what it’s worth, clearing the cache seems to get it to update, but I cannot say that leaving the app to clear its cache is any more convenient than force-quitting

Fixing bugs does NOT warrant a shiny new blog post.
Just sayin’
