It would be great to have the option to select at least two favored languages for media.
For example 1. norwegian, 2. english
this way my dual audio (jap/eng) anime would select english, while media with norwegian audio/subs would be prefered where available
I heavily support this suggestion. Wife is Korean, I’m American with a hearing loss. We really need plex to support 2 subtitles at once. English is her second language, so she needs Korean subs, and I need English subs pretty much all the time.
This suggestion is about an option to define a secondary subtitle language – not to show two subtitles at ones but as a fallback if the file has different subtitles (see the example given above → Norwegian & English as preferences; Plex to pick English subtitle if no Norwegian ones are available).
What you describe is covered in another feature suggestion, so you might want to move your vote to that thread instead.
Setting multiple languages preferences is a must. I am a longtime Kodi user and moved recently to Plex. This is one of the features who miss in Plex.
At least, selecting a regional language, such as French Canadian (fr-CA), when the regional language audio track is not present. should fall back to the main language, such as French (fr) or another regional language, such as French France (fr-FR).
Currently, it falls back to the default audio track. For example, having the setting to French Canadian (fr-CA) for a movie that has an English default audio track while having a secondary audio track in “general French” (fr), will start the audio in English. This is annoying and render this feature useless.
I am surprised that the request is not more popular. This is one of the reasons for why I still prefer to use VLC locally as I can input all preferred subtitle languages that I want to in order.
@jeffle81 I was not aware that Kodi supports this feature. Could you please elaborate on how? If Kodi actually supports this feature, I’ll move to Kodi and use PlexKodiConnect to play media in my Plex library
Language priority for both audio and subtitles (independently) would indeed be nice.
On a related note also having an option for meta data language priorities to use based on audio language /original language would round it off nicely.
Example: as a Swede I would prefer to have metadata in swedish for all movies that are Swedish, but default to English for all other language.
This is something that I find pretty aggravating. At minimum I wish I could set preferred audio language by library as opposed to at the account level, I.e. if I set my language to English I have to change every one of my anime’s to Japanese, but if I prefer Japanese many of my movies end up preferring Italian > English.
Being able to set either original language, or a tiered set of language preferences would fix one of biggest frustrations with plex.
11 years after and we dont have this feathure yet…
pllz add this.
So problem is when you have English selected as main audio auto select every time you want to see anything that has more then 1 audio track you must change.
So if i select Norwegian i must change all the rest.
So for me its more a
If “Norwegian” audio avail than do “Norwegian” audio.
Else
if “Norwegian” dont exist than do “English”
Same can be done with subtitles to be fair.
Due to kid being young i normally do a full remux. but if i have set to English and it dont have English soundtrack i can end up Icelandic or finish . i know a few words but not engouh to watch anything XD
I would love to have a portuguese portugal option, why 3 portuguese options, there is only 2 portuguse, portuguese (brasil) witch is correct and one is Portuguese (portugal) the one i want, why complicating it?
Multi-Priority Language Settings for Audio and Subtitles
I would like to propose adding a multi-priority list for language tracks and subtitles under the account settings. This feature would allow users to set a priority list for which language tracks and subtitles should be used by default.
Alternatively, it would be beneficial to have the option to set the default language for audio and subtitles for an entire season or show, offering more per-show settings.
Ideally, both features could be added, which would greatly enhance the user experience.
Scenario:
As a viewer who enjoys both anime and regular shows, I have different preferences for each:
- For regular shows, I prefer to watch them in English to avoid unexpected dubs, like Italian, which are often set as the default track and with subs off.
- For anime, I prefer the native Japanese language for dubbed shows. Whith Eng Subs enabled
Currently, I find it tedious to manually change the language track for every episode. This proposed feature would simplify the process and save time.
At present, I use MKVToolNix to either change the default flags for the tracks or remove the unwanted audio tracks, which is not ideal.
Three Solutions for this.
- If you do this:
You will get Japanese audio on anime, and the correct (full) subtitles, and if you change to the English audio it will change the subs to the correct English Signs and Songs track if you have your tracks flagged correctly (if the client supports it, Android TV used to but it’s broken now, but works on the Plex PC apps, PlexHTPC, and the web player).
The downside is if you have English stuff you will have to manually turn the subs off if they are not forced English subs for untranslated content. I have to do this for every western-origin movie I add the first time I watch it.
-
You can mass-set the language tracks for a show using Pasta. That link is for the author’s own hosted instance but it’s possible to self-host the site as well.
-
You can set an override for a single show from Plex as it is. If you choose the Edit pencil for a series and go to the
Advanced
tab, then scroll down to the bottom, and you can set the audio and subtitle choices specifically for that show. It will change the playback on all episodes. This is especially useful for still-airing programs that you may be adding single episodes or entire seasons to in the future.
@PlexTeam: can we get some traction on this? It’s a very useful feature, and surely isn’t that difficult to expand the existing audio/sub preferences with a prioritised list.
Hi everyone, how are you?
I’ve been using Plex for years and I really like it.
I’d like to recommend the option of having two preferred subtitle languages. For example, if the file has PT-Portugal and PT-Brazilian subtitles, I can set the primary subtitle to PT-Brazilian and the fallback to PT-Portugal automatically.
This would be very practical, as I have some TV series that have PT-Portugal subtitles, but are actually PT-Brazilian.
I also want this feature.
I watch Japanese anime and Korean drama, with English subtitles.
Basically I just want original audio and not dubs. And for the shows I watch they always have Japanese and English, Korean and English, or just English.
So being able to set language preferences as a list instead of just having one would be great. I’d set it to Japanese Korean English and all of my shows would automatically work out how I best like them.
