New Plex Guide Very Poor in UK

@Afullmark

After a subsequent data ingestion, the New indicator appears to be correct now for the 7th June as well

Are there issues with the ingestion process for E4 (Channel 13) and E4+1 (Channel 28) ?

I haven’t been able to record The Goldbergs S07E15 or Schooled S02E15 successfully but instead have ended up with recordings of shows I don’t recognise or incorrect episodes.

According to Plex the first airings were on Thursday evening with repeats Friday morning, Saturday afternoon and this afternoon.

Looking at things in more details it seems that today’s schedule is totally screwy…

According to Freeview today looks like:

According to Plex today looks like:

In summary there is:

  • Missing programme data (The House of Magic at 9:55 vs the new airing of TBA)
  • Incorrect show times (Celebrity Come Dine with Me 12:40 vs 12:35, 13:10 vs 13:05 and 13:40 vs 13:35, The Goldbergs 14:10 vs 14:00, The Goldbergs 14:40 vs Schooled 14:30, The Big Band Theory 15:05 vs 15:00, 15:35 vs 15:30)
  • Incorrect episodes (The Goldbergs S03E22 vs S07E15)
  • Incorrect programmes (Schooled S02E15 vs The Goldbergs S03E23)

Thanks for flagging the issue. I checked today’s schedule (after doing a refresh - latest data was available at about 12:30 today) and I can see discrepancies when comparing with E4 schedule on this page TV Guide | What's On Channel 4

I found these

I will refer it to our provider as examples of errors

The 5Star+1 channel guide is wrong and feels like it has been for a while now - at least since the issue previously reported. It also is an HD channel and should be marked as such.

For info, 5STAR + 1 is not an HD channel, it is standard definition. It is broadcast using the H264 codec so you may see your TV or receiver incorrectly showing it as HD, as originally HD channels only ever used H264. Because H264 is more efficient at compression it will a look better than the heavily over compressed normal SD channels so might even look HDish to the eye, but this just goes to show how they have over compressed normal SD. The non +1 version of 5STAR is broadcast using normal SD MPEG2 (so it can be seen on all equipment) so will look worse than the +1 version.

Thanks for that. useful to know.

I have compare the guide data for 5 Star on channel 30 with the data for 5 Star+1 on channel 55 and I cannot see any differences - this was data based on a refresh yesterday.

So if there is an issue, it would also be on 5 Star not just 5 Star+1

You may well be right, I can’t check the Plex Guide at the moment. Recent examples though - London Has Fallen was showing in the guide as last night so I record, it wasn’t (the programme about the making of sex dolls that recorded instead was unexpected!), tomorrow night is showing as Olympus Has Fallen whereas it appears that it is actually London has Fallen, Monday I had a A Few Good Men set to record following the Plex guide but that wasn’t on.

I will check the EPG data for 5 Star this afternoon comparing today and tomorrow against the channel schedule. New data should be available in about 30 minutes and I will do an EPG refresh then and check

I can see discrepancies in the schedule for programs starting 7pm - 9pm today, 8pm-11:05pm tomorrow

I will refer these to our provider as examples of schedule errors

This has been fixed

I have escalated the repeat. There was some automated process that was going wrong. The channel is now being monitored closely

Many thanks - I can see this has been fixed in my guide now.

Cheers again - you’re efforts are much appreciated.

In a couple of weeks this thread will be a year old and is quickly approaching some 1250 posts, so I have to ask…

When are we going to have reliable guide data that doesn’t need us the users, and more importantly, you (which costs Plex money and presumably takes you away from other more interesting work) constantly finding issues, reporting them, chasing the fixes up etc, etc…?

Not to mention the following that we had prior to the provider switch:

  • Movies that can record over a 5 minute news/entertainment break
  • Being able to search for shows and movies by actor

I also think Plex should be looking at merging the over-the-air data with the downloaded data as well, as that could assist show times being wrong and/or being moved late in the schedule.

As a side note: We still have no grid view in either the XBox One or Samsung Tizen apps and no-one from Plex seems interested in posting in there threads here or here :frowning:

Sorry just a couple of my other grips

catching up with loose ends !

This was fixed in time for the last 2 airings on the 1st of June.

Just catching up with outstanding actions

This was fixed in time for the airing on the 25th May.
EPG guide refreshed on the 24th May showed the correct film and year

(times in this extract in GMT)

I can verify it was as I saw the change on either the 24th or 25th - many thanks again.

Catching up with reported issues

The Village series error linking to US instead of Welsh series was fixed in time for the 17th May airing

Yikes - just accidentally deleted my post whilst trying to edit it. Here it is…

This problem was predictable last year .

Plex simply have not got a grip on it and unless they do something substantially different, they never will. To be clear, I am referring to Plex-the-company, not individual Plex employees that I am sure are still working hard playing a never-ending game of whack-a-mole.

Unfortunately, Elan does not appear to recognise the issue as being significant judging by his lack of engagement.

I decided to keep my blood pressure down by using an external source (XMLTV) and have never looked back. I think I spotted 1 error in the last 10 months.

I am annoyed with myself for going this route - it means I have given up by paying for another service when I shouldn’t have to - but at there is no more stress involved and the pain has gone away. I only popped back to this thread out of morbid curiosity having not thought about it for so long now.

On this topic, I am professionally embarrassed for Plex and people like Elan. They are falsely advertising a paid-for service and clearly do not care enough to either address it or at least be open and honest about it.

[edit:].
Just did a quick calculation: I have downloaded ~1,200 episodes/movies using the external EPG without any manual intervention.

Well put, you have said exactly how I feel about Plex (the company)

They are far too concerned with adding new features (that frankly are not needed and often break Plex requiring patches/fixes etc) than making the basics work properly.

DVR has been somewhat shaky from the start, it’s still nowhere near as reliable as a cheap DVR box and that’s before we get to the guide issues.

What I don’t get is why the hell they can’t make it use the over-air guide that the cheap DVR box’s do? I have read on this thread that some have written stuff to do just this, so why won’t Plex?

Whilst I am here, I would also like to complain about the hit-miss of the advert deletion software, either make the default settings work or give the user more control over them.

That would be useless, that guide does not have any season/episode information. At least where I live. You wouldn’t be able to track what has already been recorded and what is missing.
We don’t know the details why Gracenote was dropped and Plex will not share them (fair enough). So we either have to love with the second best option or supply our own guide. Gracenote won’t come back anyway, I guess it was elan that started this somewhere.
You can still voice your frustration obviously, maybe it will help at some point. Good luck

I do that manually as well - Plex’s comskip sucks.

I use Avidemux for 99% of them, only cutting at keyframes so no re-encoding. It only takes 1-1½ min/episode from not-yet-loaded to finished-saving. If you only record a couple of episodes/day, that’s a cup of coffee’s worth - no big deal.

When I am unable to do that (the 1% when adverts start and stop at other frames) I use another editor that does re-encode.
