Nvidia SHIELD/Android app SSA/ASS format anime subtitles + transcoding problems

Tested the new build this morning.

Initial issue I had with the external subs on a particular video not rendering but rendering normally (though now offset, as below) when merged into the MKV is still present.

Also, the new build introduces an issue that sees subs offset to the right on many videos.

It should look like:

But instead it looks like:

I’m also now encountering an issue where a video just crashes the app out and forces a relaunch. Weirdly, this was somewhat intermittent - this file has variously rendered normally, rendered offset and crashed out all within a 15 minute test. Even more weirdly, on the instances where it has rendered normally, the subs in the other file I was testing (in the screenshot above) didn’t render at all. These issues are reproducible on my Shield 2017 and OnePlus7T phone. Haven’t tried the Shield Pro 2019 this morning.

I grabbed logs straight after testing the offset subs file followed by a crash trying to play the other file.

Running into three issues on my Pixel 4A. Running your most recent apk and Android 13 Beta 2. The issues are incorrect font size, position, and color.

As for color, it should be red, but is appearing blue.

Incorrect (when direct playing in the plex app):

Correct (in VLC on PC):

Any chance of reuploading the build? Wod love to try out ass support.

Any update on this?

Edit : i know this is nvidia shield forum. But will this ass sub support come to android mobile too?

I have the test build running on my phone. It’s working pretty well, but has some issues. My guess is we’ll see a new test build or maybe even a beta build soon.

@sensei321 Explain your issues if you want them corrected.

I was answering DarKni8’s questions. I’ve been PM’ing sixones with logs and descriptions of the issues since the beginning as written in my post 20 days ago. Plex are well aware of my issues.

Is full support not gonna be available for Android 9.3 release?

No. This is still experimental and not ready for release.

Will this also fix the longstanding issues with VOBSUBs and Android Plex?

No. This is specific to ass/ssa support. Do you have a link to this vobsub issue? I’m not aware of that problem.

It’s here. I believe it’s been an issue since the image subtitles update a few versions ago:

Will this also support samsung tv’s?

You should remember, you have posted in the threads multiple times acknowledging the issue.

No news. The devs are still looking but nothing is standing out as to the cause. They can reproduce and see the problem so they at least have something to test if they figure out the problem.

That was a slightly different issue. There, the font was being rendered all weird. This is whole lines missing which is unusual considering vobsub is an image format. You don’t just miss lines when you’re rendering an image.

That’s a bummer. I guess we wait for another 4-5 years for vobsubs to be addressed.
