Plex Media Server not visible from Apps on LAN

Server Version#: 1.41.5.9626-72009629
Player Version#: Latest from app stores on play/amazon

After DSM 7.2 update I had to reinstall Plex Server as it seemed to break. Now I can connect to it via a browser see my media and play but the apps on the LAN can not see the Plex Server I’m running on DSM.

I uninstalled completely Plex from DSM and reinstalled. First the latest version from Plex site and then the latest on Synology site - no difference.

I have some odd errors that the server cannot access 127.0.0.1 that I can’t figure out why, but I can’t see if that is the issue.

Appreciate any guidance.

Some of the errors I’ve grep’d out:

What do you mean by “Reinstall” ?

Did you upgrade from DSM 6 → DSM 7.2.2 ?

Did you delete the PlexMediaServer shared folder in this Reinstall ?

Please provide more details.

May I have the full Server logs ZIP file PMS gives you?
– If you can’t get it from PMS,
– Stop Plex
– FileStation → PlexMediaServer / AppData / Plex Media Server
– Right-click Logs → Compress to Logs.zip
– Download the ZIP and attach here.

HTTP 503 is the “Maintenance” code — The Server is updating/upgrading the DB.

Given Synology CPUs are not very powerful, DB

Thanks for the quick response!

Yeah, I updated from 6.x to 7.2.2 - I see now how to attach the zip.
I deleted all users and groups/folders related to Plex after doing the complete uninstall.

I see in the real time server log that is is actually hitting localhost, so that might be a red herring.

I had DLNA turned on in a previous install and I didn’t select it in this install.

Also - DSM is setup with a static IP and DNS pointing to google DNS servers
No VPN, proxy or anything - just internal LAN

If you upgraded from DSM 6 → DSM 7.2.2,

Did you know, you can migrate your existing server from DSM 6 → DSM 7.2.2 with no loss ?

To make it happen, all we need is the old Plex server in the Plex shared folder
and you granting certain permissions which DSM 7 won’t let me do for you anymore (like it did in DSM 6)

Question:

Looking at these logs gives the impression you (somehow) brought things from the DSM 6 server over to DSM 7 ?

I see a lot of things which don’t belong anymore.

I see Chrome attempting to login (same 192.168.0.x network)

Looks like you’re trying to add sections but nothing is working?

You should turn off IPv6 support (Settings - Server - Network - Show Advanced)
You have an IPv4 only LAN

I deleted the Plex and Plexmediaserver folders during one of the reinstall when things didn’t work, thinking a clean install would fix things. I did a couple of them with various levels of cleaning

So dsm 7.2.2 has introduced functionality issues with Plex?

Just verified there is no Plex folder anymore

DSM 7.0 forced a complete rewrite of how Plex works on Synology.

Everything I had in DSM 6 was gone.
The scripting in the package is all new in order to work with the new restrictions imposed by DSM 7

In DSM 7,

  1. Plex (user) is abandoned. System Internal User (service) PlexMediaServer was forced.
  2. New shared folder was forced. Shared folder Plex could be used to copy PMS from into the PlexMediaServer shared folder (during installation).
  3. The installation scripting has NO privileges anymore.
( I can’t do things for you automatically like I did in DSM 6)

In short, it was a disaster.

Now, some 2+ years later, running as System Internal User PlexMediaServer, it all works again.

For you and your media: (This is one of the biggest issues switching to DSM 7+)

For each shared folder containing media you want to use:

  1. FileStation - Left panel
  2. Right-click on the shared folder → Properties
  3. Permissions tab
  4. Add System internal User PlexMediaServer to create a new ACL
  5. Grant permissions as you deem appropriate.
  6. “Done” to finish creating the ACL
  7. “Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files”.

Looks like this:

RIght-click Properties - Permission Tab - CREATE

Set permissions for PlexMediaServer

Apply to all folders and files in this shared folder.

Plex works as before on DSM 7.
You should pay attention to the firewall. Make sure to disable it or have a rule to open the ports needed (LAN and/or WAN). Let me know if you need that info

Secondary info.

You’ll notice the new menu now available in DSM 7.

This was created to help with the common problems using Plex on Synology.

The most frequently used is claiming lost or new servers (when names collide) using the Plex Claim Token.

It saves you from getting into the command line and dealing with it.

The FAQ has been updated for both DSM 6 and 7.

I had done all the permissions stuff per the installation completion message.

The last uninstall/delete/install left me with 2 nas entries as can be see in the screenshot
I just have one share - multimedia, with directories for Movies/TV, etc. I guess Plex created shares on the nas for video/photo/music? I don’t use those - nothing in them. I couldn’t recall if they were there from the original DSM or not so I left them.

From the web browser accessing Plex Server, I don’t have issues (other than now the duplicate servers where one is problematic). I had this working without issue since I started this upgrade.

I just can’t access anything from Plex on my android phone or fire tv sticks that are on the LAN that I used to be able to. The firewall is off, and I can’t see from the apps view, what is failing.

@pnmi3

Looking at your Plex.tv account, I see 3 instances of ‘NAS’.

Which should be removed ?

  1. Last seen a month ago ?
  2. Last seen 10 hours ago ?
  3. Last seen 35 minutes ago ?

Additional update:
I did one more uninstall/delete/reinstall

I still have the non functional nas entry and the functional one, however, I can see both of them from the apps.

I can’t confirm, but I wonder if the app was seeing the non functional one previously.

Would be nice to be able to delete it, but I don’t see how from the server UI.
I also suspect it is ok to remove the unused shares Plex created?

I held off updating DSM, glad I did and you guys were able to make the best of the situation you could. Thanks for the help!

Fast reply! Wow!

I was typing the followup

I don’t know, I only see 2, one is not functional - I can’t tell which is which

I did access the one to test just now and played a video

On Synology, NO shares are created.

The photo, video, and music shared folders are Synology’s doing for their apps.

We usually make our own shared folders which are free of Synology encumbrance / permission problems.

If you already have files in those folders,

  1. Create your own ?
  2. Rename the Synology ones to something temp, Create your own version of those same names,
  3. CUT & PASTE everything from the old to the new.

You aren’t required to use anything which DSM 7 created for you.

I think I know which to remove. To confirm which to remove, would you please Restart PMS so it updates its timestamp on Plex.tv ?

With that updated timestamp, I’ll know it’s the current one.

Those shares are empty, I have my own and that is all setup, thanks - I wasn’t sure where they came from so I’ll leave them alone.

I just stopped Plex Media Server and restarted it on DSM.

If you don’t want/need those shared folders – delete them. It’s your NAS

I’ve cleaned up your server list.

You will now see one nas entry after restarting / refreshing apps.

Awesome, thanks for all the help and quick replies!

Take care!
