Plex will not add all my new folders and shows series i long since deleted. Despite scanning library

the file size limit I’m getting says 8 MB and the text files are 10 MB (specifically 10,241 KB each) . except for 3.log which is just 3.3 megs. i will provide that since i can.

Plex Media Server.3.log (3.3 MB)

Need to see all of the Plex Media Server.log files.

Can you zip them, then upload?

If zipped, they should compress and be well under the limit.

I pulled the files from my system and the zip file with all the logs is under the 8 MB limit.

Plex Media Server.zip (4.1 MB)

Thanks.

You’ve permission problems.

Please do the following:

  1. Open File Station.
  2. Right click on Media & choose Properties.
  3. Select Permission Tab
  4. Make sure PlexMediaServer has at least read permission to the folder (Edit if necessary).
  5. Important: Check the box for “Apply to this folder…”
  6. Save
  7. Wait for DSM to finish checking/setting permissions.
  8. Then, in Plex, re-scan your libraries

If you do not see PlexMediaServer listed, then see FAQ 29 - DSM 7 - Give PlexMediaServer access to your media.

I already have read permission enabled for it. should i change it to include write?

update: i forgot to check the subfolder. I am doing that right now, and will rescan the libraries upon its completion

further update. Still no changes after doing the plex dance again. rescanned, emptied trash, cleaned bundles, and rescanned. I still see shadows and titans in the tv shows.

Not for the user plex.

Your system is running DSM 7. A lot changed from DSM 6.

Plex Media Server now runs under the system internal user PlexMediaServer, not plex.

You need to give PlexMediaServer access to your files.

Follow FAQ 29, linked in my prior post. It has instructions on giving PlexMediaServer access to your media files.

ok i’ll get on that. Should i delete Plex user first, or after i add Plex Media Server? or not at all? I am worried 2 of the same might lead to cross talk

Don’t worry about the user plex. It won’t cause any issues. Can clean it up later if desired.

Do not add a user named PlexMediaServer. It should already be there, but you cannot see it right now.

Just follow FAQ 29. You should see PlexMediaServer when creating editing permissions.

FYI, PlexMediaServer is a “system internal user.” That’s a new thing from Synology with DSM 7. Those users do not show up in the User & Group section of the Control Panel.

man what a huge trap for casual users that the update springs on us. ok rescanning now. hopefully ill see the dead shows vanish

man its just taking so long. i am seeing tons of shows being added. I still see the dead shows for now. but glad to see venture bros and other stuff is being added. .

It catches pretty much everybody. Synology mandated the changes with DSM 7. The user PlexMediaServer has very few system privileges, so Plex could not make the changes themselves.

FYI, regarding the user plex

The Plex data folder, with the database, metadata, etc, is now /PlexMediaServer, not /plex (another DSM 7 change).

The user plex and the plex shared folder are no longer used by Plex Media Server. You can delete them, use them for other purposes, or just leave them be. It does not matter to Plex Media Server on DSM 7.

I had 104 shows in my TV library. Now it’s 71. and the new shows are populating! and the titans folder was exorcised along with the vacated shadows folder! no more ghost files. You really helped me out @FordGuy61

I am so happy with the results. But still furious they wouldn’t just activate the media server with plex being an installed and active package. i suppose that is a synology problem, not Plex. Its still scanning, but man seeing these changes is a real pick me up i long needed. thanks a ton guys!

I’ll reload the shadows series and do a rescan but it looks like it will work just fine now. I’ll be back if there’s an issue

Good to hear it is now working.

From looking at the log files, Plex has a lot of files to scan.

After it finishes you may still see some dead files, but emptying the trash should now remove them from the libraries.

You can speed things up a bit by disabling intro detection, credit detection, and video preview thumbnails in Settings → Library. You can re-enable them later if desired (or schedule them to run during the maintenance window).

FYI, at some point you should look at cleaning up some of the file names. It will help Plex correctly recognize the movies and tv shows on the NAS.

Example:
/The Twilight Zone/The.Twilight.Zone.2019.S02.COMPLETE.720p.WEBRip.x264-GalaxyTV[TGx]/The.Twilight.Zone.2019.S02E03.720p.WEBRip.x264-GalaxyTV.mkv
Should be:
/The Twilight Zone (2019)/Season 02/The Twilight Zone (2019) s02e03.mkv

The closer you are to the Plex documentation, the better Plex will work. Everybody pushes it a bit, but if you stray too far, Plex will have trouble recognizing and organizing the files.

There are many tools that can help with naming things. Filebot is popular. The free version of Tiny Media Manager works quite well. There are many others as well.

TMM Renamer Patterns:

  • Show Name: ${showTitle} (${showYear})
  • Season: Season ${seasonNr2}
  • Episode Name: ${showTitle} (${showYear}) s${seasonNr2}e${episodeNr2} ${episode.title}
  • Movie Name: ${title} (${year}) {imdb-${imdb}}

PowerRenamer in Microsoft Power Tools is helpful for simple renaming with pattern matches or regular expressions. It makes quick work of tasks such as adding a year to file names, removing undesirable text from multiple files, etc

I’ll get off my file naming soapbox now.

Write back if you run into any more issues.

yeah i can see what you mean lol

ok well renaming them and the folders actually works. for the most part. The black and white twilight zone epsiodes have the names up to 37 and then they are just numbers despite being all named, and structured the same. but at least they work. i’ll play with media manager and see how things go but i think i’m good for now unless i have issues with other features!

There were multiple Twilight Zone series. If you have episodes from each series, they must be kept separate for Plex to recognize them correctly.

Twilight Zone series: Search - TheTVDB.com

Add the year to at least the show folder, and preferably the file names, to help differentiate between, for example Twilight Zone (1959) vs Twilight Zone (2019).

One other thing to be aware of is episode ordering. The order in which episodes aired is many times different than when they are released on DVD.

Plex uses The Movie Database (TMDB) and TheTVDB.com for episode ordering.

You can pick between TMDB aired and TVDB aired/dvd/absolute orders.

The default is TMDB Aired.

For a library, you can change the default from TMDB to TVDB: Edit the Library → Advanced → Episode ordering.

You can change the ordering for an individual show as well: Edit the show (pencil) → Advanced → Episode Ordering.

Season 1 has 36 episodes. If you have episode numbers above 36, your files may be using TVDB Absolute Ordering.

You can tell Plex to use that ordering (as mentioned above). If you want aired/dvd ordering, you’ll have to rename the files accordingly.

ok well new problem. I added music to my library, with the VPN connection tuned off and just my LAN connection on, and i lot connection to my entire server. what did i do wrong?

i tried to update the media server but none of the updates will work. they say i need updates that i already have. I need this working as i will be out of town soon and it picks NOW to be broken on me.

its far too many updates to choose from on the synology list on the updates page. I don’t know if i have 32 or 64 bit, i am sure i don’t have ARM, but all the pkgs will just say not the right device, or must be updates to DSM 7.00004 and i have DSM 7.1 so that should be better right?

now i can access the NAS on my end. so its still connected to my home. its functioning.

In Settings → Server_Name → General, check the Server Update Channel setting. Make sure it is on the desired setting, Public or Beta.

On that same page, Plex will indicate if a server update is available. You can click on “Please Install Manually” and it will download the update to your PC. You can then install the update via Synology Package Center.

You can also download the update from plex.tv if desired. The log files are from a DS218j, which has an ARMv7 CPU. Download the ARMv7 version for x18 Series systems.

i did not know it had an ARM. thanks for the clarity!

I ended up doing that this time since it was all i could do at the time, removing my server and rebuilding it, the libraries, and refriending people, and it seems to work for now.

I hope when i connect and reconnect the VPN that it doesn’t destabilize it like that again. This was infuriating to see everything go to hell just cause i added music to my library.

Unless you’ve changed your VPN setup since this thread, remote access will not work with the VPN established. After dropping the VPN, you will need to disable, then re-enable remote access (Settings → Remote Access).

Regarding adding music, or other media, to the server, check the configuration in Settings → Library. The tasks to generate thumbnails, analyze audio tracks, etc are CPU intensive and may take a long time to complete. Consider scheduling the tasks to run “as a scheduled task.” They will then run during the maintenance window (Settings → Scheduled Tasks) and be less likely to slow down the system when you are trying to stream media.
