I searched online (not TVDB) as @OttoKerner suggested and, as usual, he’s right.
TVDB doesn’t have a listing for Sword Art Online II - it is listed simply as Sword Art Online/Season 02. You can fight with Plex and TVDB or surrender now and forego a lot of senseless killing. Just rename all your Sword Art Online II as Season 02 of Sword Art Online.
A TV Show Library/
…Sword Art Online/
…Season 01/
…Sword Art Online - S01E01 - The World of Swords.xxx
…etc, etc…
…Season 02/
…Sword Art Online - S02E01 - The World of Guns.xxx
…etc, etc…
It may not be exactly right, but there is little else to do. TVDB and Plex have a plan and if you want to coexist in their kingdom you have to submit, or die (with a large anime sword through the head).
You’ll have to Plex Dance the entire series. Do all the steps, leaving NONE out.

What is known as ‘Sword Art Online II’ elsewhere, is treated as Season 2 of ‘Sword Art Online’ at TheTVDB.
ソードアート・オンライン - TheTVDB.comSince Plex uses TheTVDB as the source for metadata for TV shows, TheTVDB is what counts.
Adding TV shows to Plex:
- Look up your show on TheTVDB
- Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like
§ : % *
, simply leave them out.- Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases.
- Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder.
Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext
(‘- additional info’ can be left out)- After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.
Mass-renamings to the proper Plex naming convention are a breeze with Filebot
Special Know How for Anime:
look up the anime in question in Google and some other anime-related websites. Especially you want to find out the english title of the Anime and its japanese title in the various Romaji methods. Then search for all of the title variants at TheTVDB until you find the Anime. Then use the title exactly like it is used at TheTVDB to name your files and folders.
