Going around in circles with 'permissions'..Help!

<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I’ve copied my TV shows folder from a my cloud home device to my new Synology DS223J. So far so good. Found Chucks Plex server build and installed it. So far so good. But…when trying to see my TV shows on Plex nothing is coming up and I get a message saying that I do not have access. I have tried the permission setting for my media folder and also my plexmediauser account more than 40 times today but still no joy. I’ve been reading the forum all afternoon and the permissions setting seems to help everybody except me. Everything ‘appears’ to be set up correctly but I just cannot viewy media files. Praying somebody can help on here…

Which version of Plex Media Server is installed?

Can you access the server settings?

Did you mess with permissions on the /PlexMediaServer shared folder?
If so, do this: FAQ 32: Repairing the PlexMediaServer shared folder

For media permissions, be sure to check the box for “apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files.”
See FAQ 29 - DSM 7 - Give PlexMediaServer access to your media

If all else fails…

  1. Ensure Plex is configured for debug level server logs
    Settings → Server_Name → General + Show Advanced

  2. Enable Settings → Library → Scan my library automatically (adds some info to the log files).

  3. Restart Plex Media

  4. Wait 2 - 3 minutes for Plex to fully start and log things.

  5. Pull server logs and post the entire zip file to the thread.

To add to FordGuy,

You don’t have access to the PMS server -OR- just the media ?

If you don’t have access to the server itself –
Did you do this? (it makes certain your server is claimed to your account correctly)

Cheers gents!! I ‘think’ I’m making some progress. My folders and files are now showing in Plex, and it is doing a lot of scanning…could this be why I am unable to click the ‘claim server’ button yet?

Also, it says there is an update available, v.1.29.2.6364 (please install manually). Should I do this or not? I am using chuckpa-ds223-1.29.2.6364-6d72b0cfk…

Warrren, You can safely upgrade to something more current here.

Check Control Panel - Info - to see your CPU type then download from here.

Stay on 1.29.2.6364 for now. It is a solid release. You can upgrade later, after you have Plex up and running.

You can claim the server now if you wish. To do so, follow the procedure in FAQ 25, linked by Chuck.

When you tell Package Center to uninstall PMS, the first screen says “Are you sure?” Click Next, then choose the “Uninstall Only. Keep files…” option.

When re-installing, you will see a “Plex successfully claimed by…” message if the process is successful.
