M2 Mini Transcoder Crash

For the past 5 or so days I have been having the most random crashes. There doesn’t seem to be any reason to it. On my M2 Mac mini, running macOS 13.4, the Plex Transcoder service will randomly exit and crash the application. I have the Mac logs for it and the Mac is saying that its the transcoder. I’m wondering if I could get some help on this. Plex has been running fine on it since the day the M2 came out. Its just started happening in the last few days. I have ran 2 database repairs and both of them showed nothing wrong. I ran the SQLite method and the Github Script and both provided the same OK note on the database. Is anyone else having this issue? I can provide the Mac crash logs if needed or anything else if you can specify which logs will be needed. Thanks!

Edit 2: In case anyone comes across this, someone in another thread was having a somewhat same issue. Basically, I had a few episodes from “The Boys” that were crashing the transcoder. I was able to reproduce this down to the very second. If anyone runs into something that sounds like this, see what file is playing when the server crashes.

It seems to happen at the end of episodes. where the server just crashes.
I feel it only started happening when I upgraded my Mac Mini M1 to MacOS 13.4.

How did you resolve your issue?

I’ve been trying to work out why its been transcoding for me. when I’m direct playing. Seems .srt subtitles on an LG tv are direct stream. Which is kicking of the transcoder.

I’ve downgraded all the way back to Version 1.31.1.6733 and so far with a few episodes playing can’t replicate the crash. Hoping sticking to the old version is the fix for me.

For me it was the encoding of a few episodes in the series. I had to re-encode them and my issues went away. I guess the transcoder just had an issue with them and would crash the whole server.

Anyone still getting these crashes, please run with debug logging enabled and when the server crashes, restart the server and download the server logs

Also Use the Finder’s Go menu, select Go To Folder… then enter the following in the dialog box that pops up:

~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/

then copy out and zip any file mentioning plex

Attach the server logs zip and the diagnostic reports files zip

I have the same crash reproducible, so I will get the diagnostic reports and debug server logs

But I will post it on the below thread as I’m on an M1 with Xbox client, and it happened on 1.32.4.7195 and still now on 1.32.5.7318

PMS Crashes at the end of every show

Server Version#: 1.32.4.7195 Player Version#: how do I tell on the xbox? When I watch MKV files with subs turned on PMS crashes at the end of every video. Server is an M1 Mac player is an Xbox1. Played one of the video files via the web client (Firefox) on an M2 Mac with the same subs, and PMS does not crash. Played that file on the again on the xbox without subs and it did not crash. Turning the subs off before the video finishes seams to avoid the issue.

PMS Crashes at the end of every show

Same setup. Xbox client (Xbox One Series X) Mac M1 PMS MKV with SRT subs and it crashes near the end of the episode, right after the last bit of SRT text (the remaining minute or so has no dialogue so no subtitles left to play). This works in browser player, only crashes in Xbox Client. Debug logs and associated crash Diagnostic report attached. I have a Plex Media Server development build to offer to Mac OS users that have been getting server crashes when the transcoder crashes out - this will not stop the transcoder crash but address the server crash issue

I will make this build available to Mac users who have passed me evidence of the server crashes - anyone else affected and willing to try, do let me know

You had a transcoder crash at 2023-Aug-16 16:50 which brought the server down
We have a fix coming out for the server crashing when the transcoder crashes and we now also have a fix for the transcoder crashes when subtitles are in use and they finish before the end of the movie

I will give you access to a development build that fixes both of these issues

Also have an M2 Mac running PMS. Getting near daily crashes which is abnormal. Where would I look to see if I’m experiencing a transcoder crash like the OP? Thanks!

Please go to this folder with Finder
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports
and see if there a Plex Transcoder file created at the time of the Plex Media Server crash

Thanks - I have added you to the PM thread - you should now have access to the development build 1.32.7.7407 which has a fix for the Plex Media Server crashing when the transcoder crashes and also a fix for the transcoder crash when coming to an end for subtitles before end of the movie.
