New EPG and release

Ah, I see now issues have arisen, glad I’m pulling the switch on live TV, even though I’ve wasted £150 on 3 WinTV DualHD tuners, which once I’ve moved I’m be selling if any UK Plex user is interested? Reason for selling them is where I’m moving to in the Valleys will only have 24’ish Freeview Channels, which isn’t good. If only Plex would officially start supporting Freesat/satellite Tuners, is be back oh live TV in a heartbeat, but I’m having to start streaming Freeview channels via broadcasters apps and websites.

Live long and prosper Jedi warriors, and I do hope the whole EPG provider issues are fixed soon…

Dave

@sa2000 Thanks for your help in the forums, it is nice to see someone from Plex addressing the EPG issues, and I’m sorry that you seem to be the only one, your help is much appreciated.

Your question though was What is your major issue that you refer to as breaking DVR?

For me it is was having an EPG provider that was about 95% correct for the UK, which was Gracenote, to an EPG provider Tivo that I’m struggling to state is 50% correct for the UK and I am being very generous on giving 50%.

It appears that an issue with the EPG is reported to Tivo, and we all wait about one month to see if they fix it, if not try again and wait another month to see if it if is fixed, ad infinitum, Tivo are like Plex, they refuse to give any ETAs on fixes, is this why Plex teamed up with them.

Can @elan or anyone in a senior role in Plex, please explain why you switched from Gracenote to Tivo? I know that it was EPG costs, but why would Plex expect to pay peanuts and get a reliable EPG? Paying peanuts has not worked, we need you to switch back to Gracenote, until you have extensively tested the Tivo EPG and are happy that it is at least as good as the EPG from Gracenote.

I am having now almost daily meetings with TiVo and escalating issues, We do have some regional and local channel issues in the lineups and one of the priority actions is ensuring all UK OTA lineups are correct - I did an audit and the results of the audit are being actioned

Another priority item is getting the “New” indicator for BBC episodes set appropriately and that is being followed up.

There is now a public spreadsheet of issues and there is a link to it from the reporting feedback post Reporting Plex DVR Lineup Inaccuracies

Episode identification has been flagged as a major issue and we need to identify where it is going wrong, The use of Originally Aired Date was expected to mitigate the problem

Let me know which specific issues you have been waiting a long time for a fix for

And who is addressing the laundry list of bugs that have existed for more than a year?

The guide problems are self inflicted by PLEX, just like ignoring the ROKU API changes back in December. In both cases all PLEX resources went to a problem PLEX created and nothing else has been accomplished to address bugs.

Finally had to switch and now of course “Record all NY Yankees Events” is GONE. It doesnt work! WTF!!!

Now I can only “Record all MLB Events” which I dont want. This sucks.

It’s not the case at all that we switched to save money, the hope and expectation was to get higher quality data across a variety of different “universes” if you will (e.g. we get music data from them as well).

we need you to switch back to Gracenote

Just to be blunt, it’s not that easy. It’s not like these are simple pay-as-you-go plans, these are complex contracts which have a pretty long duration.

Please know that we’re working as we speak on improvements to the data both in terms of reporting issues to TiVo as well as and fixes and improvements we can do on our end. It’s super important to us and a high priority ongoing concern.

I would have thought TiVo data was in use by a dozen other companies or more. How could there be so much that needs to be reported?

@elan, for my area, both Zap2It (Gracenote) and Shedules Direct have accurate channels, and correct schedules. However, other providers, including Plex’s use of TiVo has the wrong OTA channels listed and one channel is time shifted by 3 hours. I put it in the following tread (New EPG has guide issues for the Bellingham / Vancouver region) and it has had no traction, nor do I see it documented in your issues spreadsheet to at least know that it’s being looked at. I was forced to initially used Zap2XML, but since it didn’t include HD programming info, I had no other option but to pay to use Shedules Direct, which brings back everything I lost when Gracenote was dropped from Plex. Is your group too busy working on the UK issues? I also went through the trouble of using the “Plex EPG Lineup Inaccuracies”. For me, the old Gracenote guide was perfect and the new guide is unusable, as some of the channels I record from are either unavailable or incorrectly time shifted.

That is my fault for not coming back to your post after my initial response. It has been very busy and there is a backlog. With regards to times of airings - i can only go with what the channel itself says the airing is and comparing that with what we show. The ones i checked at the time appeared ok. I will get back to your forum thread

Hi,

First, it is great that we have finally heard from a senior exec given the extremely high level of issues, however, how does the current state match the desired aim of higher data quality?

Also, I find it almost unbelievable that setting up a major contract would not have included a high level of testing before signing. It seems clear that almost no testing was carried out and so your team have tried extremely hard to ruin the Plex experience in this area for a great many people, with the more technically aware of use resorting to sourcing EPG data from a different source at additional cost.

If I were you and your team, I would feel ashamed of the way this has been managed and the way your loyal members have been treated.

Regards, Richard

I can’t find this in the online spreadsheet for Sweden / ComHem / Comhem Sweden Digital.

  • The guide for Channel 153 SVT Barnkanalen/SVT24 is completely empty.

  • Plenty of shows have the wrong year. Just so you have a few examples (I’m not actually recording all of these): TV4: Elementary (2019), Downton Abbey (2019), Bygglov (2019), Magnum (2019), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2019), CSI (2019). TV6: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2019), 24: Legacy (2019), Cops (2019), Community (2019), My Name is Earl (2019), 2 1/2 men (2019), NCIS Los Angeles (2019), Ink Master (2019), Superstore (2019), Frasier (2019), Just shoot me (2019), Simpsons (2019). Fox: Modern family (2019), The Orville (2019), Legion (2019), CSI Miami (2019), Bull (2019). There are lots of other examples as well.

When the EPG has the wrong year for a show, the show doesn’t match the old setup so I have to schedule it for recording again (and notice when the show comes back online). And they are (of course) not matched against the old existing episodes having the correct years, so existing episodes are re-recorded with the show year being 2019 instead. Lots of manual work required here in order to keep track of what to save and move the actually new episodes to the right place.

Of course there are also very many episodes without relevant season/episode numbers.

Please note that most channels in the lineup are less relevant, at least for HDHomerun users, as they are encrypted and cannot be recorded. Important channels are SVT1, SVT2, TV4, TV6, Fox, SVT24, Axess TV, Barnkanalen.

I’m attaching a dump of the current EPG for reference (had to rename it from .html to .html.txt to upload it).

guide.html.txt (575.2 KB)

Aren’t you tired or at least mad of spewing the same nonsense every time for years? Whether it’s in the Roku forum, PMP forum, android forum, music forum, etc etc.

You’re constant boilerplate of the same explanation is getting very tiresome. Maybe you guys should step down and reevaluate the leadership of your company and bring people in who can actually manage this 35 headed snake you guys made and lost control of.

UK TV
Whilst I understand the issue with contracts etc there must be a way to utilise the OTA listings, as a temporary measure. These are used in tvheadend and are vastly superior to the Tivo provided junk and better than Gracenote
Or if OTA EPG not possible a temporary return to Gracenote at least until Tivo sort things out
I have paid for a month of Emby just so my recordings work which I should not have to do as a fully paid up member of Plex
Please help us loyal users

Regards

I no longer have the option to “Record All NY Yankees Events”, only “Record all MLB EVents” which I obviously dont want. The main point in using plex was it had this feature and now its gone.

@elan please look into recording MLB events, especially since its baseball season if you werent aware. The new system broke the ability to “record all NY Yankees Events” no idea why

not just record all ny yankees events either, it doesnt work for any teams anymore.

Virtually all stations currently show “Unknown airing” for anything past ~7PM Saturday 8/3. Chicago OTA. @sa2000

UPDATE: Guide refresh filled everything in. But why should I have to do a manual refresh? The guide is supposed to be part of the refresh every day between 2 and 5AM, right?

It’s a known issue and is being worked on. Currently, however, when you do a manual refresh, you should have close to 13 full days of data.

The current auto refresh only updates the next 24 hours and the 24 hours starting at Day + 13. This is being reviewed. In the meantime, please do manual refreshes every few days.

Yep. I experience the exact same thing. No listings after Saturday were showing. A full guide refresh fixed it for now.

This needs to get fixed quickly. Just noticed a gap in recording the daily news for 3 days in a row. A manual refresh brought in the data.
