Plex Media Server - Synology DSM 7 Preview - Issues ( Archive )

Future: Use the </> (code) formatting then the forum won’t interpret anything.

@this is stuff </>

oops… continuing.

Since you have the command line —

ls -la /volume1/@apphome

If we see a Plex Media Server and PlexMediaServer then we’ll know what happened

for i in /volume1/@apphome/Plex*
do
echo \"$i\"
ls -la \"$i\"
done

Not sure that the copy/paste for the second one worked right, but anyway

UGGG,

I am stupid :man_facepalming:

bash-4.4# cd /volume1/@apphome
bash-4.4# for i in Plex*; do echo \"$i\" ; ls -la "$i"; done

any thoughts?

@sasopirk

I answered you in your other post. (Please don’t cross post in the future?)

TO ALL FOLLOWING HERE:

For those who are now using the “Packaging 2.0” preview (which is about to be production status).

I have completed first draft of how to use Docker with the new packaging structure.

I would appreciate comments on accuracy and clarity.

Thanks.

Hey,
I got guided here from the Synology forums and was told @ChuckPa or @trumpy81 could help me.

I made a post but struggling to get any help on it.
Here’s the link

Any help hugely appreciated.

Hey @Freakystuie

As you installed, Did you go through what felt like an unending gauntlet of it telling you different permission settings weren’t right or did it sail through with little to no trouble?

“Page isn’t working” imples you still have the old DSM 6 app in there. Do you?

Did you uninstall the DSM 6 app BEFORE installing the DSM 7 app or did it just "upgrade?

If it upgraded, please check the contents of the Plex shared folder.
Does it still contain all your metadata ?

Yea no dont think i uninstalled, i do remember having the permissions thing like 5 times come up
When i look in the plex folder theres nothing in there no

That’s good.

Next question. Do you have your own certificate installed in DSM ?

If so, without telling PMS about it, it will interfere.

I had to rethink your description a bit.

Did it also / possibly say, at any point, “Server didn’t send any data” ?

If so, that is confirmation of a certificate conflict.

If you had your own prior to upgrading, it might be worth checking both DSM 7 and Plex to make sure they are still working correctly.

Now, I know it’s problematic to get your logs but, since you’re now on DSM 7, and my updated “packaging 2.0” is about to become public, I’d like to suggest you start using it. It’ll make recovering from errors like this easier PLUS you’ll be able to backup your metadata using HyperBackup.

If so, you’ll find my latest hand-built packages here.

I’ll notify everyone when they are official public --or-- you can check the release announcements.

Ok thanks heaps. I actually fixed it by following something you wrote:
IF DSM 7 is showing as an UPGRADE on the DSM 6 package –

In order to remedy

  1. Confirm all metadata still exists in the Plex share
  2. Uninstall the DSM 7 package
  3. – Select the ERASE all of PMS option (erases the errant DSM 7 data)
  4. After fully uninstalled,
  5. Now install DSM 7 package again.

I completely uninstalled PSM then reinstalled it and fixed.

Thanks heaps though.

Cool.

Now when you next upgrade the package, it’ll move you into the new structure.

It might take a little bit ( there is no rhyme or reason ) or it might be instantaneous but you’ll then have a PlexMediaServer shared folder.

The old Plex share is there for you to use as you wish or to delete… your choice.

I removed the old plex and I also selected the option remove everything!

And then tried to install the latest version on my synology nas.

but its stuck at installing, just keep seeing the circle for almost an hour.

What should I do nw?

what? why shouldnt use the dsm 7 version? in the download section are two versions:

synology dsm

and synology dsm 7. Why shouldnt we use dsm 7 if we upgraded our dsm to 7? this doesnt make any sense! why have it there then?

1.24.1.4931-1a38e63c6 is the latest dsm 7 version, why is this one not good?

Hi all! I am new here, not sure this is the correct place.
I am moving all my documents from another NAS (from a different brand) to a DS214play.

I made a copy of all the content of my Plex Media Server folder from my old NAS (a WD) to retain all my metadata. In which location do I need to copy that folder before installing Plex on my Synology? Is there any change I need to make to indicate the folder locations of my media?

Moved here from other thread

@Dateien

To what are you referring?

There is only ONE case where you should not use Plex.tv/downloads.
That case is if you have installed my updated “Packaging 2.0” structure.

If you use this, you must remain in this structure. Be advised , very soon, it will be production release anyway.

With regard to Synology’s Package Center version, PLEASE ignore it and do not use it.

Please look very carefully at the version offered by Package Center (online version)

  1. It is old (build 3744).

  2. It was the first package AND it was BETA test

  3. Since then, the DSM 7 packaging was refined and made production status which is what you download from https://plex.tv/downloads

Now, please be advised, since the production version of DSM 7 was released, I have gone on to improve it to another level.

In the version 2.0 scripting package, where I have significantly revised it and completely changed the storage structure on DSM 7,

  1. You will have a visible shared folder again so you can make backups of your Plex server

  2. Should you wish plug-ins, provided you exercise the appropriate caution, you can install plug-ins again. (DSM 7 is very fragile AND constrained)

  3. If you ever need to manually retrieve log files, you can

  4. Use of either the Plex or Linuxserver docker images can be perfectly overlayed without breaking the underlying native package.

@Dateien

Perhaps you missed the documentation ???

Be advised, for some it has gone for a few minutes, for others it has required a few days.

The process of converting your metadata (however much you have) is a one-time “pain” you must endure if you wish to keep all your customizations and history.

Don’t worry if DSM logs you out.

you have multiple ways of watching progress and determining when complete.

  1. Plex/Migration.log – It will log each step, and signal completion
  2. Resource Monitor will show find, realpath, or 'mv running.

LET IT RUN to completion.

If you interrupt, you’ll split the data and make a mess. I can put it back together but it takes a LOT of effort.

I’m not going to upgrade unless Im forced to! Plex it working fine for me. This is a mess. I have a spare Synology Nas that doesn’t have any drives I might use to test out 7.0 when I upgraded the drives in my current Nas. I’m hoping if I have to upgrade I can migrate my Plex server over to it?

The moment you cross from DSM 6 → DSM 7, you will have to pay the toll and deal with it.

It doesn’t matter how you make that crossing, the changes will occur.

Hi all, according to this thread it looks like bad timing on my part here, but I just got my Synology and Im trying to move my server from Shield to my DS920+. I pretty much know the process, but I am having trouble finding where to copy all the data onto the NAS. I have installed Plex Media Server on the NAS, and it appears to be successful. I just do not see any Plex folders or PlexMediaServer folders anywhere on my NAS to copy over the old data. I have checked in File Station and even WinSCP…though admittedly I am pretty new to DSM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
