On DSM 7, you must grant permission for PlexMediaServer username to read.

Newby here. Retired too, so I’m not as quick as I used to be, so please be kind.

I’ve read a lot, but I’m not sure I’ve got this straight. Hopefully, someone can set me straight.

I bought a Synology 920+. I want to use it mostly for Plex, movies and pictures in folders.

Am I correct in thinking that I have to forget about the Beta version of Plex for DSM 7.
I have to download the 1.24.2.4793 version (or above) in the Plex downloads, do a manual install on the Synology ?

If that is the case, is there any settings I have to make to ensure that the NAS doesn’t try to update it with the one in the Synology beta area ?

Going forward, is it advisable to keep looking for newer updates on the download area on Plex, if I want to update my Plex package on the NAS ? Is there a way to automate this?

Thanks in advance. I just want to make sure the Plex experience isn’t a disaster with the Synology. I understand it worked fine before, but going to DSM version 7, it really caused problems.

  1. Yes
 Ignore the version Synology shows in Package Center. It was written for Beta DSM 7. It doesn’t work well anymore with DSM 7 final.

  2. Download from plex.tv/downloads for your machine - Intel 64 bit

  3. When you perform the initial setup -
    a. Open Plex by its IP address on the Syno directly in the browser –
    – http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web
    b. After you get it all initialized, you’ll be able to use the QuickConnect link that Synology provides in Package Center.

  4. You’ll need to give PlexMediaServer (the system internal user) permission to read your media shared folders.

We have a FAQ for Synology.

If you look here, scroll down a bit and you’ll see where I walk through one way of setting up PMS on DSM (General Info: New DSM users)

Thank you so much !. I’ll give it a go. Thanks again.

Hi @ChuckPa

Not that long ago you very kindly got me through the challenge of upgrading from DSM6 to 7. Unfortunately I had a volume crash on my NAS that was unrecoverable.
Fortunately I had time to backup all my media and settings.

So now I have a clean volume ready to transfer everything back. I made a copy of the PlexMediaServer directory as backup so my question is, should I install the latest version of Plex first onto the NAS and then copy over my backup of PlexMediaSever or copy over the PlexMediaServer backup first then reinstall Plex?

Thanks

@pioneer123

This is actually pretty easy.

  1. Create the “Plex” shared folder again
  2. Create sub folders “Library/Application Support”
  3. From your copy of PlexMediaServer, COPY Plex Media Server into Application Support (just as if it were DSM 6 again)
  4. Make certain you do not have a PlexMediaServer shared folder.
  5. Install Plex – Letting it take as long as needed to “Migrate” (Import) again.
  6. Hopefully, you remember enough of the Migration Instructions to set the permissions again

In the future, if you use HyperBackup to make your backups, you can let it restore the PlexMediaServer shared folder. It’ll save you a lot of time and will do it right automatically

Question about closing an old Plex server and starting another.

I had an old NAS that there isn’t much I want to keep. I bought a DS920+ that I just added Plex and some larger hard drives. My old NAS used an old Mac computer that had Plex on it as the server and had it pointed to the NAS for the media. I transferred the media to my new larger hard drives on my DS920+. What is the process of shutting down my old Plex server account on my MAC and then “turning on” the Plex account on my new Synology DS920+?

Thanks again for the help.

@hitch99

The new server on the Synology will “turn on” automatically when it’s “Claimed” into your account.

To remove the old server (drop from your account):

Settings - Authorized Devices - Server (dropdown) - REMOVE (the server you want to delete)

Perfect. Thanks ChuckPa. I was obviously overthinking this. Simple as could be.
Thanks again.

Hello @ChuckPa, I have unfortunately ran ahead and upgraded to DSM 7 without checking whether this was a good idea. When I realised Plex wasn’t working anymore, I uninstalled it from my DSM (I chose the 1st option, keeping all files and configurations).

However, I can’t seem to find a Media Server package that is compatible with my device :frowning:

It’s a DS218 with a Realtek RTD1296 SoC CPU.

Grateful for any help

@antimo

RTD1296 = ARMv8 (which is 64 bit)

Those options only exist in DSM 7 packages. Which version was installed?

Ah thank you, I think I tried all of them except ARMv8!

I managed to install it, but I now get the same error I was getting earlier (after I updated to DSM 7):

Playback Error
Please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted.

This version is 1.25.7.5604-7000.

PS you’re right, that option was coming from a DSM7 package, I didn’t make a note of the version but I installed it from the Package Center.

You really need to delete the entirety of this thread and start over. I’m a normal person. Not a tech enthusiast or somebody who wants to read through your tomb of technical crap to find the answer. Absolutely no clue what I’m supposed to be doing to get this software to work. I updated to dsm7 update 3 and now I have to reclaim the server every time I open it. The Plex team really needs to come up with a bullet proof solution
Especially for us with lifetime licenses who put our money behind this software. The entirety of this support forum has been an utter fiasco to try to decipher and I’m beginning to think that’s intentional.

  1. I’m not going to delete the entirety of this thread. There is a lot of info here. Try using the SEARCH function.

  2. If you want help, just ask without ranting. Frustration IS allowed.

  3. If the NAS is properly configured and connected, the installer provides everything needed to make it bullet proof.

Now, What’s the problem you’re having ? it keeps falling out of your account?

  • Which version of PMS is installed?
  • Is the server wired or wireless ?
  • Is the server address static or dynamic ?
  1. I have. Repeatedly.
  2. Plex will not remain claimed on DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 3. It was fine before update 3.
  3. The NAS is properly configured.

Version 1.25.7.5604
Wired
Static

@Plex_420

Will you please make a ZIP file of the logs or download them from PMS itself?

Manually created logs can be created by:

  1. FileStation:
    – PlexMediaServer / AppData / Plex Media Server
  2. Right-click “Logs”
  3. → Compress to Logs.zip
  4. Download the ZIP file
  5. Attach the ZIP file here for analysis.

This user account ( Plex_420 ) has made 2 posts in the forum.
Which account did you post with?

@ChuckPa I re-read my post and probably it looked like I solved this but I haven’t :frowning:

I found the right package to install on my DS218, but I am getting that Playback error even though Permissions are set up correctly.

@antimo

Can you please grab me the logs ZIP which captures this? (make certain DEBUG logging is enabled please before you recreate/capture)

I got the logs (talking about Plex logs right?). Verbose fine or you prefer normal? Can I drop em here or should I dm them? Don’t know if there’s confidential info inside
