Universal Continue Watching lets you track all of your in-progress movies and shows across different sources in a single row on your home screen. This row merges On Deck and our older Continue Watching for all pinned sidebar items. This means you can keep track of new and up next episodes of the shows you watch or pick up right where you left off across multiple servers or other on-demand content. We have also added the ability to remove an item from Continue Watching via the context menu. Simply long press on the poster on mobile or TV, or click the overflow menu on Web and Desktop and select Remove from Continue Watching. The movie or show will then be removed from the row and no longer appear there (until you start watching it again).
Requirements
This feature is only available when using the automatically managed home screen. Manually managed (custom) home screens will not have the row.
Itâs supported in the latest versions of Apple TV, iOS, LG, PlayStation, Roku, Samsung, Vizio, Xbox, and our hosted web app.
Android currently has the feature in its beta app.
The Remove from Continue Watching action requires Plex Media Server v1.21.4 or newer.
There are a couple of known issues with this version that will be fixed in the upcoming Plex Media Server v1.22.0 release, including an issue that prevents shared users from removing an item.
Roku: The action requires Roku app v6.7.14 or newer. (Currently available in the Plex preview channel and coming to the regular, public channel when itâs next updated.)
The action is not currently available on LG, PlayStation, Samsung, Vizio, or Xbox because there is no long press action available there.
Please share your feedback on this feature with us in this topic!
I like the combined On Deck and Continue Watching. Makes sense, less clutter, one less hub. Clean and simple.
Now, apply the same âless clutter, fewer hubs, clean and simpleâ logic to the multiple rows of âRecently Addedâ youâve introduced, and youâve got something. Perplexing you do work to combine two hubs into one, and at the same time, add multiple extra hubs to the home page.
As is, itâs somewhat of a disappointment. Disabling auto-manage of the home page so that we can combine Recently Added hubs is my best option for a clean, uncluttered home page.
After activating this, it appears to be functional on the localhost and web hubs but Iâve fired up the Roku app, preview version 13 and only see the hub showing tv show titles from one tv show library. It should include tv shows from two tv show libraries, one from the main server and one from a shared server as shown correctly in the localhost and web views.
Edit: Never mind.
In order for the additional tv shows to appear (from other sources or other libraries), I had to make sure the shared tv show library was actively PINNED on the sidebar first before seeing the content in the hub. Works as intended.
So if this Continue Watching hub acts as a queue/watch list for tv shows but as of this moment only shows movies that are in progress, wouldnât it make sense to include a âAdd this item to Continue Watch hubâ under the movie or tv show option menu (Roku).
A watch later or watchlist hub would be a nice addition to this experiment since these items are not anything in progress. Understandably the Continue Watching hub was meant to be automated.
What Iâm getting at is that in order for my mother to get a movie in any of the home hubs, what sheâll do is fast forward a few minutes into the movie that she wants to watch later and then it shows up in Continue Watching. This isnât an issue with tv shows but it is with movies. So if movies in progress are going to be added to Continue Watching, then the next hub that should be added is a watch later or watchlist.
Good!!! If you actually allow there to always be a way to avoid such garbage features I âmayâ use Plex a lot more.
I, for one, do not want my working lists combined. If I want to watch movies I want to only see movies and if I want to watch TV all I want to see is TV shows. Combining the two on the hone page just means that the home page becomes less, much less, valuable and useable.
@Elijah_Baley Agree with your stance. I like my content hubs separate on my own server but this newly combined hub actually keeps things in the forefront for my mother who just wants things to appear for her on the home for easier access. I personally donât want that for my own setup and wonât be activating this feature but it works well for her case.
Nice! Enabled the experimental feature and it popped up on the roku. Really like that the old CW is gone and that the new CW is a consolidation with OD (on deck).
Its also good that this new row is called CW as OD really was not a good name.
QQ: Does the remove from CW completely remove the show from the row or just reset the single episode being watched leaving the show on CW? Canât test as weâre watching something
Another question: How do you get the Remove from CW to come up on the roku app? Tried long pressing OK and also the * button but donât see the option.
It turns out that you need to be using the Plex preview channel for Roku currently (until the next update of the public channel). Weâve updated the original post info.
The new CW appears to be somewhat broken via https://app.plex.tv/desktop (Version 4.52.2) â I only have the last 6 items watched on the new CW whereas when I go to my localhost (Version 4.51.3) all 26 items on deck appear.
Also noticed that the Continue Watching on the home hub (via web app) is not clickable anymore which should bring you to a page with all the items on that list. On Deck is like this and is needed for those of us who have large watching lists so we donât need to keep scrolling.
The other rows on this page are clickable (Recently Added Movies / TV)
Really great that this is a thing now especially the âRemove from Continue Watchingâ which works with On Deck (for now until theyâre merged) too. Worked perfectly with the two shows Iâve tested and synced up perfectly on all devices I use. (Desktop, iOS and Apple TV)
Though, this might not be very popular but I actually liked having the âContinue Watchingâ with the specific episode/movie with the thumbnail.
Before
After
Same here. Iâm not a fan. It takes too long to find my in-progress videos with the merged row. I hope Plex keeps this as ONLY in the automatically managed home page.
I hope it becomes an option on itâs own - that it can be enabled regardless of how your home page is managed.
I want to use it, because I liked the merged Continue Watching and On Deck Hubs. I canât use it, because I have to manage the home page manually, so I can get rid of the multiple rows of âRecently Addedâ ( I hate that feature with a passion)
For what its worth I actually rather have the show thumbnail rather than episode but can see why others would want it the other way. Might be an option for folks who want it different.
I first thought it was a bug that my shows didnât show up in the CW, but I have noticed that the list indeed seems to be limited to 6 items only. As soon as I set some movies of the movies in progress as âunplayedâ, my shows on deck started showing up, still limited to 6 items thoughâŠ
There is certainly something funky happening with the web app. Sometimes it shows more (never all of them) but if you refresh the page it then goes back to 6 again.
